The cranial anatomy of blindsnakes has been markedly understudied, with the small size and relative rarity of encountering these subterranean reptiles being significant limiting factors. In this article, we re-visit the skull anatomy of the Australian southern blind snake Anilios australis Gray, 1845 using microCT data, and produce the first complete atlas for the cranial anatomy of a representative of this speciose typhlopid genus. The skull is formed by 18 paired and four unpaired elements. We here produce a bone-by-bone description of each element as well as an inner ear endocast for each o

OBJECTIVES: With rising quality of speech perception in cochlear implant users, the indication widens. Nowadays, cochlear implantation is reasonable even in vestibular schwannoma patients. Speech perception with a cochlear implant is in these patients as promising as in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. However, the impact of cochlear implantation on vertigo and tinnitus after removal of vestibular schwannoma has not been investigated yet.
METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analysed 12 patients treated with a cochlear implant after removal of vestibular schwannoma.
RESULTS: In add

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss (ARHL) affects most elderly people. It is characterized by reduced hearing thresholds and speech understanding with the well-known negative consequences for communication and quality of social life. The hearing loss is connected to age-related histologic changes, as described and classified by Schuknecht. Aging itself is a multifactorial, genetically driven process that is influenced by oxidative stress that gradually leads to reduced endocochlear potential and cell loss of key players in sound transmission and supporting structures. Oxidative stress is

At the time of diagnosis, about 20% of patients with gastric cancer have stage IV disease involving the liver, lung, and bone. Brain metastasis from gastric cancer is exceedingly rare, with an incidence of <1% of clinical cases. A 59-year-old man was admitted with hearing loss in the left ear and left facial palsy for 1 month. A magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed a tumor in the cerebellopontine angle that extended to the inner auditory canal and that was clinically diagnosed as acoustic neuroma. After complete resection, histological examination showed metastatic poorly differentiated ca

INTRODUCTION: Benign Paroxysmal Vertigo of Childhood (BPVC) is a common cause of vertigo in children and it is characterized by recurrent attacks of vertigo without warning resolving spontaneously after minutes to hours. It has been considered the equivalent of migraine in childhood.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients diagnosed with BPVC were recruited between 1991 and 1997 with a follow up of at least 15 years. The incidence of migraine, inner ear disorders and family medical history is analyzed.
RESULTS: The average age for the onset of the attacks of BPVC was 3 years and 11 months, and for sp

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is the most common heritable disorder of connective tissue. It is associated with fractures following relatively minor injury, blue sclerae, dentinogenesis imperfecta, increased joint mobility, short stature, and hearing loss. Structures in the otic capsule and inner ear share in the histologic features common to other skeletal tissues. OI is due to mutations involving several genes, the most commonly involved are the COL1A1 or COL1A2 genes which are responsible for the synthesis of the proalpha-1 and proalpha-2 polypeptide chains that form the type I collagen trip

Cochlear implantation is a highly successful intervention for the treatment of deafness that depends on electrical stimulation of the inner ear's surviving spiral ganglion neurons. It is thought that some of the variability in hearing outcomes that is seen in patients receiving implants may be a reflection of the number or health of surviving neurons. A variety of studies have demonstrated a relationship between hair cell loss and degeneration of the spiral ganglion. This has been attributed to the loss of neurotrophin production with destruction of the spiral ganglion's target, the hair cell.

Conductive hearing loss, the second most common type of hearing loss, happens when there is a problem transmitting sound waves into inner ear, which will bring a lot of inconvenience to the patient in life and put the impaired person at a competitive disadvantage. Although conductive hearing loss could be relieved by hearing aids, the inconvenience of using these removable aids or the surgery trauma of the implanted ones should not be overlooked. Transversal maxillary deficiency and high palatal arches are often found in patients with conductive hearing loss. Some researchers have reported tha

Age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, has been associated with large-scale mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletion in previous studies. However, the role of this mtDNA damage in presbycusis is still not clear because the deletion in inner ears has not been measured quantitatively and analyzed in parallel with the time course of presbycusis. In the present study, the deletion was quantified using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) in male Fischer 344 rats of different ages. It was found that the deletion increased quickly during young adulthood and reached over 60% at 6 months of age. However,

This review explores the association between GJB2 gene mutations, encoding connexin 26 (Cx26), and nonsyndromic hearing loss. Connexins are proteins that form intracellular membrane channels and regulate ion movement between contiguous fluid spaces. A family of autosomal gene mutations has been identified that lead to abnormal connexin expression within the inner ear that are associated with hearing loss. The exact mechanism by which this link is elicited remains unclear. We aim to highlight the clinically underestimated prevalence of GJB2 gene mutations, to explore the influential role of eth

Presbycusis is characterized by an age-related progressive decline of auditory function, and arises mainly from the degeneration of hair cells or spiral ganglion (SG) cells in the cochlea. Here we show that caloric restriction suppresses apoptotic cell death in the mouse cochlea and prevents late onset of presbycusis. Calorie restricted (CR) mice, which maintained body weight at the same level as that of young control (YC) mice, retained normal hearing and showed no cochlear degeneration. CR mice also showed a significant reduction in the number of TUNEL-positive cells and cleaved caspase-3-po

Drop attacks represent a significant problem during the natural course of Meniere's disease. They are characterized by a sudden fall to the ground without loss of consciousness. Diagnosis is clinical and based on the typical description of the patient. Involvement of vertical canal is possible during Meniere's disease and also after gentamicin application. Treatment of drop attacks is still a matter of discussion; most cases have a benign course with spontaneous remission and no treatment is necessary. In severe cases, aggressive treatment (surgical or pharmacological) is necessary. A case of

Vestibular neuronitis was described in 1949 and 1952 by Dix and Hallpike. Two groups of patients were described, those with sudden seizures and sensations of blackout (since identified as having vestibular neuritis) and a second group with symptoms of disequilibrium and feelings of top-heaviness or imbalance. The pathology was believed to be central to the inner ear. Arslan labeled these groups as having nucleoreticular vestibular syndrome. Using a suprathreshold stapedial reflex test, Bosatra localized the pathophysiology in the brainstem, an area rich in serotonergic neurons. This author has

BACKGROUND: Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a granulomatous inflammation involving the upper and lower respiratory tract and necrotizing vasculitis affecting small to medium-sized vessels. In contrast to a generalised WG with glomerulonephritis initial or isolated forms of the upper respiratory tract may be a diagnostic challenge.
PATIENT: We report the case of a 33 year old man with clinical signs of a limited WG exhibiting an imminent irreversible hearing loss, negative PR3-ANCA (anti neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies with proteinase 3 as target) in serum and an ambiguous histology.

Recent studies have revealed that kinesin, dynein and myosin each form large superfamilies and participate in many different intracellular transport systems. Importantly, these motor proteins play significant roles in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases. Studies using knockout mice for kinesin KIF1B have led to the identification of the cause of a human hereditary neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A. The function of members of the dynein superfamily whose existence has previously only been confirmed through genome databases, has been revealed by studies of immotile cilia synd

Stapedotomy is a surgical procedure aimed at the treatment of hearing impairment due to otosclerosis. The treatment consists of drilling a hole through the stapes bone in the inner ear in order to insert a prosthesis. Safety precautions require knowledge of the nonmeasurable stapes thickness. The technical goal herein has been the design of high-level controls for an intelligent mechatronics drilling tool in order to enable the estimation of stapes thickness from measurable drilling data. The goal has been met by learning a map between drilling features, hence no model of the physical system h

Frequently, noise-induced hearing loss is associated with the symptom of tinnitus. Preliminary results in the animal model after noise exposure suggest that the calpain inhibitor leupeptin may protect against noise-induced hearing loss. A final common pathway for cell destruction and cell death (i.e., apoptosis) is the calpain hypothesis. Calpain is a normal, intracellular, cytosolic protease activated by excess intracellular calcium. Calpain inhibitors (AK275, AK295) have been shown to provide neuroprotection in the central nervous system. A collaboration of basic science and clinical researc

The so-called KID (keratitis, ichthyosis, deafness) syndrome is a congenital disorder of ectoderm that affects not only the epidermis, but also other ectodermal tissues such as the corneal epithelium and the inner ear. Sixty-one patients who fulfill the criteria for this syndrome were identified in a review of the literature through December 1993. All had cutaneous and auditory abnormalities, and 95% also had ophthalmologic defects. The most frequent clinical features were neurosensory deafness 90%, erythrokeratoderma 89%, vascularizing keratitis 79%, alopecia 79%, and reticulated hyperkeratos
