Type A viral hepatitis: A summary and update on the molecular virology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and prevention.

Although epidemic jaundice was well known to physicians of antiquity, it is only in recent years that medical science has begun to unravel the origins of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and the unique pathobiology underlying acute hepatitis A in humans. Improvements in sanitation and the successful development of highly efficacious vaccines have markedly reduced the worldwide prevalence and incidence of this enterically-transmitted infection over the past quarter century, yet the virus persists in vulnerable populations and remains a common cause of food-borne disease outbreaks in economically-advanta

Computer-Aided Drug Discovery Approaches against the Tropical Infectious Diseases Malaria, Tuberculosis, Trypanosomiasis, and Leishmaniasis.

Despite the tremendous improvement in overall global health heralded by the adoption of the Millennium Declaration in the year 2000, tropical infections remain a major health problem in the developing world. Recent estimates indicate that the major tropical infectious diseases, namely, malaria, tuberculosis, trypanosomiasis, and leishmaniasis, account for more than 2.2 million deaths and a loss of approximately 85 million disability-adjusted life years annually. The crucial role of chemotherapy in curtailing the deleterious health and economic impacts of these infections has invigorated the se

Evaluation of larvicidal activity and effects on post embrionary development of laboratory reared Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), treated with Brevibacillus laterosporus.

The blowfly Lucilia cuprina is an economically important livestock pest that is also associated with human myiasis. To date, methods including the application of chemical pesticides, plant extracts, insect growth regulators and a range of Bacillus thuringiensis strains have been used, with varying degrees of success, to control this pest. The present study evaluated the larvicidal activity and the induction of sub lethal effects upon post embrionary development following ingestion of 12 strains of Brevibacillus laterosporus, presented individually in the diet as spores. All strains were shown

Inflammation, oxidative stress and postoperative atrial fibrillation in cardiac surgery.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication of cardiac surgery that occurs in up to 60% of patients. POAF is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular mortality, stroke and other arrhythmias that can impact on early and long term clinical outcomes and health economics. Many factors such as disease-induced cardiac remodelling, operative trauma, changes in atrial pressure and chemical stimulation and reflex sympathetic/parasympathetic activation have been implicated in the development of POAF. There is mounting evidence to support a major role for inflammation and ox

[The impact of education on chronic wound care improvement].

Although not fully understood, close relationship between health and education ensures unambiguous health and quality of life advantages to educated individuals. Education ensures different thinking and decision making processes and man is enabled to receive information from the external world. Even though the process of education and learning still relies on banking principles and coping of common knowledge, modern and technological society drives the system as well as education opportunities towards the new learning sources. In the developed world, the impact of chronic wounds on health syst

The transcription cofactor FgSwi6 plays a role in growth and development, carbendazim sensitivity, cellulose utilization, lithium tolerance, deoxynivalenol production and virulence in the filamentous fungus Fusarium graminearum.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a worldwide devastating disease of wheat, barley and other small grain cereals and caused primarily by Fusarium graminearum. Carbendazim (MBC) is one of the fungicides widely used to control FHB in China. In the present study, we have identified the F. graminearum locus FGSG_04220 as the sequence homolog for Saccharomyces cerevisiae ScSWI6, named FgSWI6 hereafter. Deletion of FgSWI6 causes mycelium of F. graminearum become sensitive to MBC in liquid medium. In addition, deletion of FgSWI6 reduces mycelial growth as well as production and development of conidia. F.

Trichinellosis in developing countries: is it neglected?

Trichinellosis is a foodborne zoonosis caused by the parasitic nematode Trichinella, which is characterized by an extremely wide host range and geographical distribution. The aim of the present review is to provide epidemiological information on animal and human trichinellosis occurring in developing countries in the different continents, where cooking habits along with poverty and poor sanitary conditions and lack of veterinary controls may facilitate the occurrence of human trichinellosis outbreaks. Countries have been considered according to the six regions designated by the World Health Or

The launch of Cancer Research UK's 'Reduce the Risk' campaign: baseline measurements of public awareness of cancer risk factors in 2004.

AIM: This national survey sought to establish levels of awareness of cancer risk factors and awareness of what individuals could do to reduce their own risk status. METHOD: Cross-sectional interview data comprising a national representative sample of 4,233 individuals aged 15 years or over across Great Britain. RESULTS: There were high levels of awareness of the role of smoking in the development of cancer, but only modest awareness of alcohol intake, being overweight, physical inactivity and older age. Recognition of the role of viral infection in cancer risk was very poor. Although two-thi

Artificial cells for the development of cell therapy.

In developing cell therapy, normal human cells are ideal as a cell source, but considering the serious lack of donor organs, it is unlikely to obtain a large enough amount of human cells. Moreover, even with current culturing techniques, the long-term culturing of normal human cells is difficult. On the other hand, in using xenogenic porcine cells and human tumor tissue-derived cell lines, there is concern that species-specific pathogens can be transmitted (such as infection by porcine endogenous retroviruses), and possible cancer may thus develop in recipients. Therefore, we are making effort

Predicting the fracture risk in 2008.

Osteoporosis is a generalized disease of bone that increases the fracture risk. Among the multiple factors involved in osteoporosis, some, but not all, are related to bone mass. To decrease osteoporotic fractures, we must be able to identify those patients who require preventive management. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is currently the method of reference for evaluating the fracture risk and deciding whether treatment is in order. Although BMD measurement is specific for detecting high-risk individuals, it misses a notable proportion of individuals

The zootechnical applications of biotechnology in animal reproduction: current methods and perspectives.

The development of the four generations of Reproductive Biotechnology, particularly in cattle and since the last world war, represents one of the best examples of the success story of technology transfer. This review will only refer to the first three generations and will not deal with nuclear transfer nor transgenesis. Based on sound so-called "finalised" research, Artificial Insemination first, then in vivo collected embryo transfer and later in vitro fertilised embryo transfer have been implemented worldwide. Each of these Biotechnologies has many advantages and limitations. In addition to

Potentials for win-win alliances among animal agriculture and forest products industries: application of the principles of industrial ecology and sustainable development.

Commercial forests in many parts of the world are deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrient-deficient forests often exist in close proximity to large animal feeding operations, meat processing and other food, textile, or other biomass-processing plants, and municipal waste treatment facilities. Many of these facilities produce large surpluses of nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter as gaseous ammonia, urea, uric acid, phosphorus compounds, bacterial sludges, and partially treated municipal wastewaters. These co-existing and substantial nutrient deficiencies and surpluses offer r

Characterization of the caprine model for ruminant brucellosis.

The relationship between man, the goat, and brucellosis is historical. Today Brucella melitensis and Brucella abortus pose a serious economic and public health threat in many countries throughout the world. Infection of pregnant goats and sheep with B. melitensis results in abortion during the third trimester of pregnancy. Although nearly eradicated in the US, bovine brucellosis is still a problem in many countries and the potential for re-infection of domestic stock from wildlife reservoirs in this country is a regulatory nightmare. Humans infected with this pathogen develop undulant fever, w

Assisted reproductive technology in canid species.

Assisted reproductive technologies in dogs began as early as the 18th century. The first scientifically recorded artificial insemination (AI) was performed in Italy by Spallanzani and lead to the birth of three pups. Progress in the area was slow, and subsequent development included AI equipment and methods for short-term preservation of fresh, and later, for frozen semen which led to the world's first litter produced from frozen semen in 1969. Improvement of freezing methods and AI equipment from 1970 onwards has rendered AI useful as a breeding technique for dogs. In parallel, AI in foxes wa

The return of tuberculosis.

At the end of the 20th century, tuberculosis remains a major public health issue. In developing countries tuberculosis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and the spread of the HIV epidemic contributes significantly to the worsening of the situation. Coinfection with tuberculosis and HIV results in special diagnostic and therapeutic problems and uses up larger amounts of medical resources in developing countries. Outbreaks of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) were first reported from US-American centers caring for HIV patients, but have now been observed in many other countr

Acute renal failure in blacks and Indians in South Africa--comparison after 10 years.

Acute renal failure (ARF) has changed in its aetiology in developed Western countries. This study compares our experiences of the aetiology and incidence of ARF a decade after a previously recorded paper in the literature. The data of 226 patients with a diagnosis of ARF during a 3-year period from 1986 to 1988 was analysed. ARF in our study occurred at a younger age. Medical causes of ARF remain the dominant subgroup. There were female patients presenting with ARF associated with self-induced abortions. Toxins of a herbal variety and infections remain the commonest aetiological factors in the

An attenuated African swine fever virus with deletions of the CD2v and A137R genes offers complete protection against homologous challenge in pigs.

African swine fever (ASF) has caused a devastating pandemic among domestic and wild swine, leading to significant economic losses in the global swine industry. Recombinant live-attenuated vaccines are a potential option for the control of ASF. However, safe and effective vaccines against the ASF virus (ASFV) are not yet commercially available, and thus, additional vaccine candidates still need to be developed. In this study, we demonstrate that the simultaneous deletion of the ASFV genes CD2v and A137R from the highly virulent isolate ASFV HuB/HH/2019 substantially attenuated the virulence in

Methodological Challenges and Preferred Approaches for the Economic Evaluation of CAR T Therapies: Evidence Review and Expert Consensus from NICE Appraisals.

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR T) therapies pose challenges for economic evaluation because of complex treatment pathways and uncertainty around long-term outcomes. Within health technology assessment (HTA) bodies such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), these features have led to recurring methodological debates. OBJECTIVES: To identify methodological challenges specific to the HTA of CAR T therapies within NICE technology appraisals and to develop Delphi-informed recommendations to support more consistent modelling practice. METHODS: A three-

Valorization of pumpkin-derived residues and waste: An analysis.

The global agricultural sector faces increasing pressure to manage the substantial volumes of waste generated throughout pumpkin production, processing, and utilization, which traditionally represents both an economic burden and an environmental liability. This paper explores the valorization of pumpkin waste within a circular bioeconomy framework, evaluating the conversion of heterogeneous pumpkin-derived biomass into value-added food, nutraceutical, environmental, material, and energy products. Through a comprehensive synthesis of contemporary research, this paper demonstrates that pumpkin r
