Novel deuterium metabolic imaging technique reveals distinct patterns of postprandial hepatic glucose homeostasis in individuals with type 1 diabetes and healthy control individuals: a case-control study.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Subcutaneous insulin delivery in individuals with insulin-deficient type 1 diabetes bypasses the portal circulation, disrupting the physiological porto-systemic insulin gradient and affecting postprandial hepatic glucose regulation. However, direct, non-invasive measurement of these liver-specific dynamics and their deviation from normal physiology in individuals with type 1 diabetes is challenging. To address this, we integrated metabolic imaging with whole-body tracer dilution to map postprandial glucose metabolism in both the liver and systemically in adults with type 1 dia

Predictive metabolites for incident myocardial infarction: a two-step meta-analysis of individual patient data from six cohorts comprising 7897 individuals from the COnsortium of METabolomics Studies.

AIMS: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Most metabolomics studies investigating metabolites predicting MI are limited by the participant number and/or the demographic diversity. We sought to identify biomarkers of incident MI in the COnsortium of METabolomics Studies. METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 7897 individuals aged on average 66 years from six intercontinental cohorts with blood metabolomic profiling (n = 1428 metabolites, of which 168 were present in at least three cohorts with over 80% prevalence) and MI information (1373 cases). We perfor

Individualized lifestyle intervention in PCOS women (IPOS): a study protocol for a multicentric randomized controlled trial for evaluating the effectiveness of an individualized lifestyle intervention in PCOS women who wish to conceive.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition which affects women in the reproductive age group. South Asian women with PCOS have a higher risk of insulin resistance and metabolic disorder compared to women from other ethnic backgrounds. Lifestyle interventions such as dietary advice and physical exercise are recommended as a first-line management option for infertile women with PCOS. Most of the randomized controlled trials evaluating the role of lifestyle interventions in infertile PCOS women were characterized by methodological issues. The uptake of lifestyle

Variability in the measurement of C-reactive protein in healthy subjects: implications for reference intervals and epidemiological applications.

We developed a reproducible ELISA for C-reactive protein (CRP), calibrated with WHO Reference Material, for which intra- and interassay CVs … hange unlikely to be due to analytical variability or CVI) was calculated as 118%, and the index of individuality, CVI/CVG, was 0.46. This suggests that CRP, like many clinical chemistry analytes, has limited usefulness in detecting early disease-associated changes when used in conjunction with a healthy reference interval. From a molecular epidemiological stan …

[Posterior stabilization of complicated spinal injuries with titanium plates].

Decompressive operations due to the complicated damages of thoracal and lumbar parts of the spine aggravate its instability. Existing constructions for inner momentary stabilization of spine are not effectual enough. On the basis of biomechanical and clinical investigations individuality modelled titanium plates with multilevel fixation by means of polymeric materials are proposed. They ensure situationally strong spine stabilization. It is possible to regulate operation mode of the plates: contraction, distraction, neutral stabilization and their combinations.

[Applies phoniatry. III. Stuttering and Cluttering (author's transl)].

Stuttering is caused by many factors, and consequential verbal communication may be abolished partially or even totally. Medical management should not concern itself solely with the speech problem, and the individual problem and behaviour of each patient should be considered. Unlike stuttering, cluttering does not mean poor communication, but again in its treatment, individuality must be considered. Treatment is based on frequent tuition of a slower speech and of control of the impulsive personality traits.

Estimation of biological variability of inflammatory biomarkers EDN, suPAR and plasma calprotectin.

Knowledge of intra-individual and inter-individual biological variation (BV) of a measurand is essential for its optimal use in clinical practice. This study estimated biological variation, reference change values (RCV), index of individuality (II), and analytical performance specifications (APS) for the inflammatory biomarkers eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), plasma calprotectin (pCalprotectin), and soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), for which prior evidence has been scarce. Twenty healthy individuals (15 women, 5 men; 25-60 years) were included. Blood samples were …

[The histocompatibility problem in military blood transfusions].

One of the basic approaches which provides for the increase of immunological safety of hemocomponental therapy is the use of donor-recipient histocompatible blood. The decisive factor in the organism's individuality is HLA-antigen system. Antigen incompatibility of donor's and recipient's tissues in HLA-antigen causes the development of delayed hypersensitivity and sensibilization of the recipient, which provoke a number of complications and posttransfusion reactions. Histocompatibility is the key problem for modern transfusiology and transplantology.

Moderating Effects of Individual Characteristics and the Target Lower Limb Muscle Group on Flexibility Adaptations to Chronic Static Stretching in Healthy Individuals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Static stretching is widely accessible across the lifespan and commonly prescribed to improve flexibility. However, whether flexibility improvements following chronic static stretching are moderated by participant characteristics or the targeted muscle group in lower-limb remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: We primarily aimed to determine whether the effects of chronic static stretching on flexibility are moderated by age, sex, training status, baseline flexibility, and muscle group. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for randomized controlled trials published bef

The small interfering RNA imdusiran as single and multiple doses in healthy, randomised individuals and non-randomised individuals with chronic hepatitis B (AB-729-001): a phase 1a/b trial.

BACKGROUND: Functional cure of chronic hepatitis B requires a sustained loss of HBsAg and hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA, which is unlikely with current therapies. We aimed to investigate the safety, antiviral activity, and anti-HBV immune responses of the N-acetylgalactosamine-conjugated, small interfering RNA imdusiran, a therapeutic strategy designed to reduce viral antigens on the path to achieving immune control. METHODS: AB-729-001 was a phase 1a/b trial conducted at 11 centres and hospitals: three in Australia, one in New Zealand, three in Thailand, one in Hong Kong, two in South Korea, a

Effects of an individual and family self-management of fall prevention programme on balance ability and fall-related self-efficacy among Chinese poststroke individuals: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Poststroke individuals have a high incidence of falls during the first months after discharge. The factors contributing to falls in poststroke patients are multifaceted, with balance deficits being the most prominent. Fall-related self-efficacy has also been identified as a key factor influencing the effectiveness of fall prevention interventions. Additionally, family members play a crucial role in fall prevention by providing support, supervision and assistance with mobility and daily activities. While previous studies support the potential benefits of a fall prevention programm

Making the rich richer: Frontoparietal tDCS enhances transfer effects of a single-session distractor inhibition training on working memory in high capacity individuals but reduces them in low capacity individuals.

Working memory (WM) performance depends on the ability to extract relevant while inhibiting irrelevant information from entering the WM storage. This distractor inhibition ability can be trained and is known to induce transfer effects on WM performance. Here we asked whether transfer on WM can be boosted by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) during a single-session distractor inhibition training. As WM performance is ascribed to the frontoparietal network, in which prefrontal areas are associated with inhibiting distractors and posterior parietal areas with storing information, we

Development of a plasma zinc concentration cutoff to identify individuals with severe zinc deficiency based on results from adults undergoing experimental severe dietary zinc restriction and individuals with acrodermatitis enteropathica.

Plasma zinc concentration (PZC) is a recommended biomarker to assess zinc status and the risk of zinc deficiency in populations. However, the relation between PZC and clinical signs of zinc deficiency remains uncertain. These analyses were conducted to evaluate the relation between PZC and clinical signs of zinc deficiency and to determine a cutoff for PZC below which individuals would have an increased likelihood of having clinical signs associated with zinc deficiency. Electronic bibliographic searches were conducted of literature indexed in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL Plus, and EBSCO and related

Association of Serum GDF-15 with Bone and Muscle Parameters in Community-Dwelling Individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle mass and bone mineral density decrease with aging, although following different patterns among males and females. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a stress-induced cytokine and has emerged as a key biomarker for inflammation, tissue injury, and metabolic stress. We tested the association between GDF-15 and specific bone and muscle parameters in a large cohort of community-dwelling subjects. METHODS: The SardiNIA survey included 4,842 subjects (2,795 females). All underwent a detailed medical visit and laboratory testing. Peripheral quantitative computed tomogr

Longitudinal assessment of age-related changes in antegonial notch depth in untreated individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the antegonial notch as an indicator of growth remains controversial in the literature. This study examined how antegonial notch depth changes during growth and whether craniofacial morphology is associated with its depth. METHODS: A longitudinal sample of 250 untreated healthy individuals (42% female) from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collection was analysed at three time points: ages 7-8, 13-14, and 17-18 years. Antegonial notch depth was measured from standardized lateral cephalograms. Multilevel general linear re

A Geometrically Tunable Cardiovascular Shunt for the Individualized Care of Neonates with Congenital Heart Defects.

Congenital heart defects (CHDs), particularly single-ventricle anomalies such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), require early surgical intervention using fixed-diameter vascular shunts. However, current shunts are incapable of adapting to the physiological changes of infant growth, often leading to hemodynamic imbalance and elevated mortality risk. Here, we report a geometrically tunable cardiovascular shunt lined with a photoresponsive hydrogel based on methacrylated dextran (DexMA) and dithiothreitol (DTT). This dual-stage crosslinked hydrogel system enables minimally invasive modul
