Hepatic alterations in the fish Rhamdia quelen contaminated with Folidol 600®.

This study has the aim of verifying the morphologic alterations in the hepatic tissue of Rhamdia quelen juveniles when exposed to 0.01 mL/L of Folidol 600. Techniques of light microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy were used. The liver was target for the Folidol 600 action after 4h of contamination. Loss of cellular contour, picnotic nucleus and decharacterization of the endothelium and of the rough endoplasmic reticulum were observed. Focuses of necrosis increased significantly when compared to the control sample at the exposure times of 48 and 72 h to the organophosphate. The dens

Elimination of the Djodji form of the blackfly Simulium sanctipauli sensu stricto as a result of larviciding by the WHO Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa.

Cytotaxonomic identifications of larvae of members of the Simulium damnosum Theobald (Diptera: Simuliidae) complex collected in forest zones of southeast Ghana and southwest Togo between 1977 and 1996 showed that the Djodji form of Simulium sanctipauli Vajime & Dunbar, a vector of onchocerciasis, was eliminated in 1988 by larvicide operations conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in West Africa. No members of the form were identified amongst 997 larvae collected up to 8 years after systematic control operations began in February 1988. The resul

Efficacy of Bacillus sphaericus against larvae of malaria and filarial vectors: an analysis of early resistance detection.

We are reporting in this paper the control of Anopheles stephensi Liston and Culex quinquefasciatus Say using Bacillus sphaericus. These have been now considered with a practical solution because of its specific and prolonged killing action against mosquito larvae. The efficacy of B. sphaericus were assessed against all instars of A. stephensi and C. quinquefasciatus separately. During the experiments, the mortalities were not found highly effective in dose concentration of LC(90) 0.01 mg/l. It is recommended by the World Health Organizations in all instars of larvae of A. stephensi and C. qui

Behavioral responses of Daphnia magna to stresses of chemicals with different toxic characteristics.

Behavior of an organism is affected by exposure to toxic chemicals. However, less has been known about behavioral responses of an organism to stresses of toxic chemicals with different toxic characteristics. In present work, Daphnia magna Straus was exposed to gradient concentrations of deltamethrin, chlorothalonil and nitrofen and the behavioral changes of Daphnia magna under different stress were examined. The results showed that the behavioral responses of Daphnia magna to the tested chemicals were affected in general by exposure concentration, rather than toxic characteristics of the chemi

Risk assessment of Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) permethrin-impregnated battle dress uniforms (BDU).

In an age when vector-borne diseases are emerging worldwide, personal protective measures are essential for shielding soldiers and other exposed persons from arthropod attack. The development of permethrin-impregnated clothing has been one recent advance in protecting persons at-risk. However, to date risk assessment has not been performed related to wearing permethrin-impregnated clothing over longer time periods. Therefore, this paper describes relevant toxicological aspects of permethrin and estimates the extent of dermal permethrin uptake by soldiers wearing impregnated uniforms by determi

Quantitative trait loci mapping of genome regions controlling permethrin resistance in the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the principal vector of dengue and yellow fever flaviviruses. Permethrin is an insecticide used to suppress Ae. aegypti adult populations but metabolic and target site resistance to pyrethroids has evolved in many locations worldwide. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling permethrin survival in Ae. aegypti were mapped in an F(3) advanced intercross line. Parents came from a collection of mosquitoes from Isla Mujeres, México, that had been selected for permethrin resistance for two generations and a reference permethrin-susceptible strain originally from New Or

Sarcoptic mange in three alpacas treated successfully with amitraz.

Sarcoptic mange is a serious skin disease in alpacas that can result in high morbidity and even mortality. Three alpacas were presented with sarcoptic mange that had previously failed to respond to repeated topical applications of eprinomectin, and an injection of doramectin. They were moderately to severely pruritic, had extensive lesions of alopecia, erythema, scaling and crusting, and had lost weight. As no drug is currently licensed for the treatment of sarcoptic mange in alpacas in the UK, they were treated with a topical solution of amitraz (50 mL in 10 L) after initial bathing with anti

Strong larvicidal activity of three species of Spilanthes (Akarkara) against malaria (Anopheles stephensi Liston, Anopheles culicifacies, species C) and filaria vector (Culex quinquefasciatus Say).

A system for biocontrol of malaria and filarial mosquito vectors has been developed using herbal extracts of three Spilanthes species, S. acmella L.var oleraceae Clarke, S. calva L. and S. paniculata Wall ex DC. Cent percent mortalities was achieved against the late third/early fourth instar larvae of A. stephensi Liston, A. culicifacies species C and C. quinquefasciatus Say using crude hexane extract obtained from flower heads of Spilanthes spp. Of the three plant species, S. acmella extract proved to be the most effective in inducing complete lethality at minimum doses, the respective LC50 a

Kinetics of oestrus ovis infection and activity of adult flies.

Oestrus Ovis is a common sheep parasite in the Mediterranean region. This study was carried out in the Ebro River Valley near Zaragoza (northeast Spain) using tracer animals to describe the seasons when infestation is more likely. Based on that information and an analysis of the evolution of the parasite within the host, we suggest the most appropriate time for treatment. Adult instars appeared in May until November and there was a diapause beginning in October-November and as least until February, so it is suggested than sheep be treated with larvicide in December.

Chemical defenses of Trifolium glanduliferum against redlegged earth mite Halotydeus destructor.

Trifolium glanduliferum Boiss. was resistant to redlegged earth mite, Halotydeus destructor Tucker (Acari: Penthaleidae), feeding compared with Trifolium subterraneum L. Extracts from T. glanduliferum leaves, obtained with dichloromethane and methanol, acted as feeding deterrents to the redlegged earth mite. Bioassay-directed fractionation of the extracts led to the isolation of several metabolites, coumarin, alpha-and beta-ionone, linalool, medicarpin, that were shown to be deterrent in laboratory experiments. The compounds contributing to the defense of T. glanduliferum were different from t

Use of ivermectin in the treatment of orbital myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Orbital myiasis cases by dipterous fly larvae are rarely reported. A case of massive orbital myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax resulting in complete loss of the globe is described. Oral ivermectin was used successfully to eliminate the larvae prior to enucleation, making the mechanical removal of larvae an unnecessary procedure.

Relationship of treatment-resistant head lice to the safety and efficacy of pediculicides.

Head lice infestation is a common and growing problem that primarily affects school-aged children. Most cases of head lice are diagnosed and treated by nonphysicians. Misdiagnosis may lead to treatment when no lice are present. Treatment failure may lead to repeated use of and improperly applied pediculicides, potentially resulting in overexposure to pesticides. These treatment failures are primarily due to the emergence of treatment-resistant lice. In regions where resistant lice are common, patients may self-treat numerous times with over-the-counter pediculicides before seeking treatment fr

Confirming the species-sensitivity distribution concept for endosulfan using laboratory, mesocosm, and field data.

In Australia, water-quality trigger values for toxicants are derived using protective concentration values based on species-sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves. SSD curves are generally derived from laboratory data with an emphasis on using local or site-specific data. In this study, Australian and non-Australian laboratory-species based SSD curves were compared and the concept of species protection confirmed by comparison of laboratory-based SSD curves with local mesocosm experiments and field monitoring data. Acute LC50 data for the organochlorine pesticide endosulfan were used for these c

Control of immature Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) on rodent reservoirs of Borrelia burgdorferi in a residential community of southeastern Connecticut.

A 3-yr community-based study was conducted on residential properties on Mason's Island, Mystic, CT, to determine the efficacy of a rodent-targeted acaricide (fipronil) to control immature Ixodes scapularis (Say) on Peromyscus leucopus. Results indicated that modified commercial bait boxes were effective as an acaricide delivery method for reducing nymphal and larval tick infestations on white-footed mice by 68 and 84%, respectively. Passive application of fipronil significantly reduced the infection rate of Borrelia burgdorferi among white-footed mice by 53%. Moreover, the abundance of questin

House-scale evaluation of bifenthrin indoor residual spraying for malaria vector control in India.

In an area of India where the main rural malaria vector, Anopheles culicifacies Giles, has developed triple resistance to DDT, HCH, and malathion sprayed indoors in antimalaria program, bifenthrin (10% wettable powder) was evaluated in a randomized house-scale trial between July 1999 and March 2000. Entomological impact of four serial doses of bifenthrin (25, 50, 100, and 200 mg/m2) sprayed in rooms in five villages was compared with malathion (2 g/m2) and unsprayed control. An. culicifacies was 100% susceptible to bifenthrin (0.1%), but only 57% to malathion (5%) test papers. Contact bioassay

Relationship between lice infestation and leather damage in cattle.

The relationship between lice infestation and leather damage was investigated in a trial involving 61 cattle, half of which were treated with ectoparasiticides for lice control either in their first or second year. Hides from the lice-free and lousy calves were removed manually at an abattoir, tanned and inspected for lice-related damage, commercially referred to as light spot and/or fleck. In both the first- and second-year animals there was a significant difference between the hides of the lousy and lice-free animals, confirming that the chewing louse Bovicola bovis is a cause of winter ligh

Prevalence and levels of permethrin resistance in Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Anoplura: Pediculidae) from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Permethrin has been used extensively for control of Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Anoplura: Pediculidae) in Argentina since 1990, resulting in the development of resistance to this and other pyrethroids. This resistance was first detected in some field populations in 1997. A survey for resistance in Buenos Aires in 2001 revealed significant resistance levels in lice on children at 24 of 26 (92.3%) schools. When compared with a previously unexposed reference population, resistance ratios (RRs) obtained by exposing the insects to filter papers impregnated with permethrin ranged from 2 to 60
