Influence of individual characteristics on static rotational knee laxity using the Rotameter.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of individual characteristics on rotational knee laxity in healthy participants. Our second aim was to verify whether the contralateral knee of patients with a non-contact ACL injury presents greater rotational knee laxity than a healthy control group. METHODS: Sixty healthy participants and 23 patients having sustained a non-contact ACL injury were tested with a new Rotameter prototype applying torques up to 10 Nm. Multiple linear regressions were performed to investigate the influence of gender, age, height and body mass on ro

Neuronal dysfunction in chronic spinal cord injury.

This review describes the changes of spinal neuronal function that occur after a motor complete spinal cord injury (cSCI) in humans. In healthy subjects, polysynaptic spinal reflex (SR) evoked by non-noxious tibial nerve stimulation consists of an early SR component and rarely a late SR component. Soon after a cSCI, SR and locomotor activity are absent. After spinal shock; however, an early SR component re-appears associated with the recovery of locomotor activity in response to appropriate peripheral afferent input. Clinical signs of spasticity take place in the following months, largely as a

Human beta-defensin-2 expression is increased in chronic wounds.

First identified in psoriatic epidermis and subsequently in other inflammatory cutaneous lesions, human beta-defensin-2 (hbetaD-2) is one of two endogenous antimicrobial peptides related to defensins in plants and animals. Our objective was to determine the expression of hbetaD-2 after injury and in chronic wounds. Biopsies of normal ipsilateral thigh skin and wound edges were taken from nine consecutive patients with venous leg ulcers (day 1) and from the same biopsy sites 2 days later (day 3). Sequential samples were also obtained from intact or meshed bilayered bioengineered skin consisting

Correction of complex foot deformities using the Ilizarov external fixator.

There are many drawbacks to using conventional approaches to the treatment of complex foot deformities, like the increased risk of neurovascular injury, soft-tissue injury, and the shortening of the foot. An alternative approach that can eliminate these problems is the Ilizarov method. In the current study, a total of 23 deformed feet in 22 patients were treated using the Ilizarov method. The etiologic factors were burn contracture, poliomyelitis, neglected and relapsed clubfoot, trauma, gun shot injury, meningitis, and leg-length discrepancy (LLD). The average age of the patients was 18.2 (5-

The effects of low level laser treatment on recovery of nerve conduction and motor function after compression injury in the rat sciatic nerve.

An animal study is presented examining the effect of low level laser (LLL) treatment on nerve regeneration following axonotmesis. Twenty animals received a standardised injury to the right sciatic nerve using a time, load and length sequence (10 min, 150 N, 5 mm) known to cause extensive axonal degeneration of the rat sciatic nerve. The LLL treatment was administered using a hand-held laser probe in light contact with the skin on the dorsal aspect of the hind leg overlying the site of the axonotmesis injury to the sciatic nerve. A group of 10 animals were treated with 6J of LLL (GaAlAs 830 nm)

A Lower Extremity Musculoskeletal and Vascular Trauma Protocol in a Children's Hospital May Improve Treatment Response Times and Appropriate Microvascular Coverage.

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric lower extremity (LE) vascular injuries present many issues: microvascular surgeons are usually unavailable to stand-alone pediatric institutions, and the rate of morbidity including limb loss can be high if revascularization is delayed beyond the critical period of 8 hours. We assessed if time to revascularization was impacted by institution of a lower extremity vascular trauma protocol (LEVP). DESIGN: Level II retrospective prognostic. SETTING: Level I pediatric trauma center. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: Pediatric patients presenting with ischemic lower extremities requiri

Reconstruction of traumatic lower extremity soft tissue defects with the combination of ipsilateral and contralateral perforator flaps.

Many flaps have been used to repair complex soft tissue defects of the leg. When the affected areas are relatively small and the local flaps are not suitable, microsurgical operation seems to be an excessive treatment and thus perforator flaps can be used. The authors present the combination of ipsilateral and contralateral perforator flaps for coverage of the traumatic lower extremity.

Hip and groin injury is the most common non-time-loss injury in female amateur football.

PURPOSE: Hip and groin injuries in football are problematic due to their high incidence and risk of chronicity and recurrence. The use of only time-loss injury definitions may underestimate the burden of hip and groin injuries. Little is known about hip and groin injury epidemiology in female football. The first aim of this study was to examine the within-season (2014-2015) prevalence of total injury with and without time-loss in female amateur football players. The second aim was to study the within-season and preseason (2015-2016) prevalence of hip/groin injuries with and without time-loss.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Perforator-Pedicled Propeller Flaps in Lower Extremity Defects: Identification of Risk Factors for Complications.

BACKGROUND: Currently, increased interest in the perforator-pedicled propeller flap should not obscure the fact that it is, in reality, a complex procedure requiring experience and monitoring similar to free flaps. Through a meta-analysis, the authors aimed to identify the risk factors of perforator-pedicled propeller flap failure in lower extremity defects. METHODS: The MEDLINE, PubMed Central, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched from 1991 to May of 2014 for articles describing perforator-pedicled propeller flaps in the lower extremity. The study selection met the Preferred Reportin
