Associations between markers of cellular and humoral immunity to rubella virus following a third dose of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine.

INTRODUCTION: Rubella virus (RV) was eliminated in the United States in 2004, although a small portion of the population fails to develop long-term immunity against RV even after two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. We hypothesized that inherent biological differences in cytokine and chemokine signaling likely govern an individual's response to a third dose of the vaccine. METHODS: Healthy young women (n = 97) were selected as study participants if they had either low or high extremes of RV-specific antibody titer after two previous doses of MMR vaccine. We measured cytokine

Readmission prediction using deep learning on electronic health records.

Unscheduled 30-day readmissions are a hallmark of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) patients that pose significant health risks and escalate care cost. In order to reduce readmissions and curb the cost of care, it is important to initiate targeted intervention programs for patients at risk of readmission. This requires identifying high-risk patients at the time of discharge from hospital. Here, using real data from over 7500 CHF patients hospitalized between 2012 and 2016 in Sweden, we built and tested a deep learning framework to predict 30-day unscheduled readmission. We present a cost-sensitiv

Mucosal-activated invariant T cells do not exhibit significant lung recruitment and proliferation profiles in macaques in response to infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis CDC1551.

TB is a catastrophic infectious disease, affecting roughly one third of the world's population. Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are innate-like T cells that recognize vitamin B metabolites produced by bacteria, possess effector memory phenotype, and express tissue-homing markers driving migration to sites of infection. Previous research in both Mtb and HIV infections has shown that MAIT cells are depleted in the human periphery, possibly migrating to the tissue sites of infection. We investigated this hypothesis using rhesus macaques (RMs) with active TB, latent TB (LTBI), and SIV-

Chronic Exposure to High Altitude: Synaptic, Astroglial and Memory Changes.

Long-term operations carried out at high altitude (HA) by military personnel, pilots, and astronauts may trigger health complications. In particular, chronic exposure to high altitude (CEHA) has been associated with deficits in cognitive function. In this study, we found that mice exposed to chronic HA (5000 m for 12 weeks) exhibited deficits in learning and memory associated with hippocampal function and were linked with changes in the expression of synaptic proteins across various regions of the brain. Specifically, we found decreased levels of synaptophysin (SYP) (p < 0.05) and spinophilin

Trajectory Decoding of Arm Reaching Movement Imageries for Brain-Controlled Robot Arm System.

Development of noninvasive brain-machine interface (BMI) systems based on electroencephalography (EEG), driven by spontaneous movement intentions, is a useful tool for controlling external devices or supporting a neuro- rehabilitation. In this study, we present the possibility of brain-controlled robot arm system using arm trajectory decoding. To do that, we first constructed the experimental system that can acquire the EEG data for not only movement execution (ME) task but also movement imagery (MI) tasks. Five subjects participated in our experiments and performed four directional reaching t

Automatic Timed Up-and-Go Sub-Task Segmentation for Parkinson's Disease Patients Using Video-Based Activity Classification.

The timed up-and-go (TUG) test has been widely accepted as a standard assessment for measuring the basic functional mobility of patients with Parkinson's disease. Several basic mobility sub-tasks "Sit," "Sit-to-Stand," "Walk," "Turn," "Walk-Back," and "Sit-Back" are included in a TUG test. It has been shown that the time costs of these sub-tasks are useful clinical parameters for the assessment of Parkinson's disease. Several automatic methods have been proposed to segment and time these sub-tasks in a TUG test. However, these methods usually require either well-controlled environments for the

Pregn-5-en-3β-ol and androst-5-en-3β-ol dicarboxylic acid esters as potential therapeutics for NMDA hypofunction: In vitro safety assessment and plasma stability.

Neurosteroids are endogenous steroidal compounds that can modulate neuronal receptors. N-Methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are glutamate-gated, calcium-permeable ion channels that are of particular interest, as they participate in synaptic transmission and are implicated in various processes, such as learning, memory, or long-term neuronal potentiation. Positive allosteric modulators that increase the activity of NMDARs may provide a therapeutic aid for patients suffering from neuropsychiatric disorders where NMDAR hypofunction is thought to be involved, such as intellectual disability, au

Diminished brain responses to second-language words are linked with native-language literacy skills in dyslexia.

Dyslexia is characterized by poor reading skills, yet often also difficulties in second-language learning. The differences between native- and second-language speech processing and the establishment of new brain representations for spoken second language in dyslexia are not, however, well understood. We used recordings of the mismatch negativity component of event-related potential to determine possible differences between the activation of long-term memory representations for spoken native- and second-language word forms in Finnish-speaking 9-11-year-old children with or without dyslexia, stu

Sleep-disordered breathing in epilepsy: epidemiology, mechanisms, and treatment.

Epilepsy is a group of neurological conditions in which there is a pathological and enduring predisposition to generate recurrent seizures. Evidence over the last few decades suggests that epilepsy may be associated with increased sleep-disordered breathing, which may contribute towards sleep fragmentation, daytime somnolence, reduced seizure control, and cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Chronic sleep-disordered breathing can result in loss of gray matter and cause deficits to memory and global cognitive function. Sleep-disordered breathing is a novel and independent predictor o

Deep Geodesic Learning for Segmentation and Anatomical Landmarking.

In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework for anatomy segmentation and automatic landmarking. Specifically, we focus on the challenging problem of mandible segmentation from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and identification of 9 anatomical landmarks of the mandible on the geodesic space. The overall approach employs three inter-related steps. In the first step, we propose a deep neural network architecture with carefully designed regularization, and network hyper-parameters to perform image segmentation without the need for data augmentation and complex post-process

Evaluation and management of sport-related concussions in adolescent athletes.

Sport-related concussions in young athletes are common, generally under reported and often go unrecognized. Concussion in sport may result either from a direct impact to the head or from indirect forces transmitted to the brain from impact elsewhere on the body. Concussions may also result from sudden acceleration, deceleration or rotational forces to the brain. The key features of concussion include confusion, impaired memory and reduced speed of information processing. Recovery may occur from a few days to several weeks or months. Both physical and cognitive rests are recommended for recover

Hippocampal synaptic and neural network deficits in young mice carrying the human APOE4 gene.

INTRODUCTION: Apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) is a major genetic risk factor for late-onset sporadic Alzheimer disease. Emerging evidence demonstrates a hippocampus-associated learning and memory deficit in aged APOE4 human carriers and also in aged mice carrying human APOE4 gene. This suggests that either exogenous APOE4 or endogenous APOE4 alters the cognitive profile and hippocampal structure and function. However, little is known regarding how Apoe4 modulates hippocampal dendritic morphology, synaptic function, and neural network activity in young mice. AIM: In this study, we compared hippocamp

Neurocognitive performance profile postparathyroidectomy: a pilot study of computerized assessment.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive symptoms attributable to primary hyperparathyroidism are important diagnostic criteria, yet the basic characterization and assessment of neurocognitive deficits in primary hyperparathyroidism are not defined fully. METHODS: In this prospective pilot study, patients with unequivocal biochemical diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism were evaluated for neurocognitive performance preoperatively and postparathyroidectomy (2 weeks, 6 months) using a battery of computerized modular tests designed by LUMOSITY. The individual test scores and aggregate scores representing

Activation of beta- and alpha-2-adrenoceptors in the basolateral amygdala has opposing effects on hippocampal-prefrontal long-term potentiation.

Noradrenaline (NA), released by the locus coeruleus (LC), plays a key role in mediating the effects of stress on memory functions. The LC provides diffuse projections to many forebrain nuclei including the hippocampus, the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and the basolateral amygdala (BLA). These three structures are intricately interlinked. The hippocampal-prefrontal (H-PFC) pathway is involved in various cognitive functions. The first aim of this study was to examine the role of BLA in H-PFC plasticity by infusion of drugs to activate and inactivate the BLA and studying the effects on H-PFC long-ter

Sex and intrauterine growth restriction modify brain neurotransmitters profile of newborn piglets.

The current study aimed to determine, using a swine model of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), whether short- and long-term neurological deficiencies and interactive dysfunctions of Low Birth-Weight (LBW) offspring might be related to altered pattern of neurotransmitters. Hence, we compared the quantities of different neurotransmitters (catecholamines and indoleamines), which were determined by HPLC, at brain structures related to the limbic system (hippocampus and amygdala) in 14 LBW and 10 Normal Body-Weight (NBW) newborn piglets. The results showed, firstly, significant effects of sex

[Development of Tax-redirected T-cell immunotherapy using TCR gene transduction in patients with ATL].

ATL is an aggressive T-cell malignancy caused by HTLV-1 virus infection. Tax, which is the most important regulatory protein of HTLV-1, is associated with aggressive proliferation of host cells and is also a major target antigen for CD8⁺ cytotoxic T-cells (CTLs). Recently, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) has proven effective for ATL, and donor-derived Tax-specific CTL might contribute to graft-versus-ATL effects in some recipients who maintained complete remission after allo-HSCT. We, for the first time, analyzed the Tax-specific T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire,

High fat diet-induced diabetes in mice exacerbates cognitive deficit due to chronic hypoperfusion.

Diabetes causes endothelial dysfunction and increases the risk of vascular cognitive impairment. However, it is unknown whether diabetes causes cognitive impairment due to reductions in cerebral blood flow or through independent effects on neuronal function and cognition. We addressed this using right unilateral common carotid artery occlusion to model vascular cognitive impairment and long-term high-fat diet to model type 2 diabetes in mice. Cognition was assessed using novel object recognition task, Morris water maze, and contextual and cued fear conditioning. Cerebral blood flow was assesse
