Earthen shrimp aquaculture ponds are often impacted by acid sulfate soils (ASS), typically resulting in increased disease and mortality of cultured organisms. Production losses have been attributed to either low pH or to elevated concentrations of toxic metals, both direct products of pyrite oxidation in ASS. The photocatalytic oxidation of nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) over titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) sheets containing metal compounds (MCs) had been studied. Calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO), calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)), aluminium oxide (Al(2)O(3)) and ferric oxide (Fe(2)O(3)) were used as MCs. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) in 617 workers at a base metal mine in northern Ontario. Workers who were employed at the mine between the years 1989 and 1994 and who continued to live within a 100 km radius of the mine were sent a self-reported questionnaire to identify individuals with possible vibration-induced symptoms in their upper extremities.
