The boundary tissue of the seminiferous tubules in the scrotal and abdominal testes of naturally unilateral cryptorchid West African dwarf goats comprised an inner non-cellular, a middle cellular and peripheral cellular lamellae. Electron microscopic investigation of skin biopsies revealed that keratinocytes in clinically uninvolved skin from psoriatic patients show the same mitochondrial ring phenomenon after the application of dithranol as has been observed in the cutaneous lesions proper. The extramural aortico-pulmonary bodies of the domestic fowl were analysed in electron micrographs by point-counting morphometry. The Type I cell constituted about 34% of the total volume of the parenchyma, whereas the supporting cells (Type II cells, pericytes and Schwann cells) constituted about 26%. Counts of the number of microtubule profiles in cross-sections of axons of bullfrog olfactory nerves indicates that about 80% of them have 2 or 3 microtubules, regardless of whether one samples axons in the proximal or distal ends of the nerve. The muscle fibres of mice containing the infective-stage larvae of the nematode Trichinella spiralis have been studied by means of the freeze-fracturing technique. By means of light microscopical techniques and scanning electron microscopy spatial organization of the lacunar-canalicular system (LCS) has been studied in structures of a mature lamellar bone. A method for making corrosive casts of osseous lacunae and canaliculi is suggested, owing to which their spatial organization can be analysed. Certain data on interconnections of the osseous lacunae with each other and with vascular canals and natural surfaces of the bone are presented. The role of LCS as a component of the microcirculatory bed of the lamellar bone is discussed.

Twenty-four cases of subacute thyroiditis were examined immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally, with special attention being directed to the multinucleated giant cells that characterize the lesions of this condition. Immunohistochemical study revealed that 99 per cent of the giant cells contained lysozyme, 82 per cent contained vimentin, 66 per cent contained alpha 1-antitrypsin, and 61 per cent contained thyroxine. Intratubular cells with numerous refractile eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules were identified in a cryptorchid testis from a 17-year-old boy. The staining properties of the granules and the ultrastructural features were studied. The accumulation of lipid or lysosomal inclusions accounted for the observed cytoplasmic granules. These granular cells were probably altered Sertoli's cells, the exact nature and significance of which need further study.

This study compares the in vitro ultrastructure of Streptomyces somaliensis with the grain formation seen in vivo. Cultured forms were cocco-bacillary with thick cell walls and septa. Individual cells stained with PAS.TCH and Alcian blue. Grains were largely composed of an electron-dense fibrillar matrix surrounding clear areas, some of which contained organisms. The ultrastructural appearances of the latter were not significantly different from those seen in vitro although the cell wall was less well defined and did not stain with Alcian blue, and there were more intracellular lipid droplets.

Two cases of Central neurocytoma arising in the lateral ventricles are presented. Both patients had well-circumscribed masses in the right lateral ventricle causing hydrocephalus. The tumors were composed of small round cells forming Homer Wright rosettes against a fine fibrillary background. In one patient surgical removal was complete and no recurrence has been noted approximately one year later. These tumors appear to be benign and complete surgical excision should be curative.

One Chinese construction worker and a Chinese cook experienced unknown insect bites during their stay in Abha of Saudi Arabia and then developed skin ulcers. After returning to Taiwan, Republic of China, they were diagnosed in our hospital as having cutaneous leishmaniasis on clinical and dermatopathologic grounds. Autogenous mesothelium was used as venous substitute in ten dogs. Patches of mesothelium of three different origins were grafted into the anterior wall of the common iliac veins (CIV): peritoneum taken from and including the posterior rectus sheath (PRS), simple peritoneum (P) and mesentery (M).
