Delusions and the psychopathology of the elderly with dementia.

Thirty-seven, out of a sample of 100 elderly subjects, all suffering from dementia, were found to have delusions. The delusions were more common in women, in patients with a history of psychiatric illness, and amongst those with higher information subscores (Blessed Scale); and were less common in patients suffering from apraxia or severe psychosocial incompetence. Amongst the deluded patients the simultaneous presence of disorientation, hallucinations and hyperactivity often signified the diagnosis of delirium, but on follow up it was not correlated with death within 18 months. The same sympt

Vestibular activation, smooth pursuit tracking, and psychosis.

Pursuit tracking and vestibular activation procedures were combined in an investigation to determine if smooth pursuit tracking deficits could be related to abnormalities of visual-vestibular interaction in psychiatric patients. In actively psychotic patients, but not in comparison groups of schizophrenic outpatients with remitted symptomatology or normal controls, a significant failure of visual fixation to suppress caloric nystagmus was related to a higher incidence of disordered tracking during both baseline and postirrigation conditions. Other vestibular irregularities including dysrhythmi

[Neuropsychology and senile dementia].

The study of senile plaque dementias and neurofibrillary degenerations, represented by Alzheimer's disease, presbyophrenia, simple senile dementia, and senile dementia of the Alzheimer type, enables, by means of its specificity, a privileged method of approach to be taken in the comprehension of cerebral mechanisms, with a resulting different conception of neuropsychology. That which is described in this paper has evolved from the application of Genetic Psychology methods developed by J. Piaget. It demonstrates the value of a synchronic qualitative analysis of dementia, even for determination

Effects of Equol on Hand Osteoarthritis in Perimenopausal Women: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Hand pain in women has recently been reported as a symptom of menopause, and the sudden decrease in estrogen levels may be responsible for joint pain in the hand. We therefore hypothesized that intake of the estrogen analog equol (4',7-isoflavandiol) would improve pain resulting from osteoarthritis of the hand in menopausal women. We evaluate the efficacy of equol intake in improving pain and disabilities of daily living caused by hand osteoarthritis in perimenopausal women. METHODS: Women aged 45-60 years with hand pain were recruited for provisional registration (n=148). Hand os

Office-Based Arthroscopy Versus Arthrocentesis as Treatment for Temporomandibular Joint Pain and Dysfunction: Preliminary Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background/Objectives: Arthroscopy and arthrocentesis are routinely performed for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, but high-quality evidence regarding their efficacy relative to each other is scarce. The current study, as part of an ongoing randomized controlled trial, aimed to compare office-based arthroscopic lysis and lavage with arthrocentesis for TMJ pain and dysfunction. Methods: Adults (≥18 years old) referred to a tertiary care hospital with TMJ arthralgia were included. The exclusion criteria comprised systemic rheumatic disease, connective tissue disease, bony ankylosis, cong

Nocturnal hypoxia moderates the relationship between rapid eye movement sleep and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems, especially rapid eye movement sleep disturbances, are associated with various neurological and psychological disorders. Given the potential of nocturnal hypoxia to induce psychological symptoms, we investigated its moderating effect on the relationship between sleep variables and psychological symptoms among individuals with sleep disturbances. METHODS: A total of 160 participants who complained of sleep problems were enrolled, and their hypoxic and sleep indices were recorded using overnight polysomnography. The psychological status of all participants was further

Identification of Neural and Non-Neural Origins of Joint Hyper-Resistance Based on a Novel Neuromechanical Model.

Joint hyper-resistance is a common symptom in neurological disorders. It has both neural and non-neural origins, but it has been challenging to distinguish different origins based on clinical tests alone. Combining instrumented tests with parameter identification based on a neuromechanical model may allow us to dissociate the different origins of joint hyper-resistance in individual patients. However, this requires that the model captures the underlying mechanisms. Here, we propose a neuromechanical model that, in contrast to previously proposed models, accounts for muscle short-range stiffnes

Positive effect of self-exercise following Botulinum toxin injection on the permanence of the recovery among the patients with HFS and BFS: A clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection serves as the primary modality for addressing hemifacial spasm (HFS) and blepharospasm (BFS), which are prevalent movement disorders affecting the craniofacial region. However, even though the short-term effectiveness of the botulinum injection may reach over 80%, the long-term effectiveness is still a debatable point Herein, we aim to investigate whether facial self-exercise following the BoNT injection can extend the time period of effectiveness. METHODS: In this study, 51 volunteers who received Onabotilinumtoxin A (BoNTA) treatment for the diag…

Combined Unilateral Radiofrequency Lesioning of the Motor Thalamus, Field of Forel, and Zona Incerta: A Series of Cases With Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia is a group of disorders characterized by involuntary slow repetitive twisting movements and/or abnormal posture. Surgical options such as neuromodulation through deep brain stimulation and neuroablative procedures are available for patients who do not respond to conservative treatment. OBJECTIVE: To present our series of patients with dystonia who were treated with stereotactic combined unilateral radiofrequency lesioning of the motor thalamus, field of Forel, and zona incerta. METHODS: Medical records of 50 patients with dystonia who were treated with unilateral combine

VIDEOFLUOROSCOPIC EVALUATION OF SWALLOWS IN ANOREXIA NERVOSA.

BACKGROUND: There are some studies in the literature about the feeding behavior and masticatory process in patients with feeding disorders; however, it is not very well known if there are alterations in oral-pharyngeal swallowing dynamics in subjects with anorexia nervosa. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the oral and pharyngeal bolus transit in patients with anorexia nervosa. METHODS: The study was conducted with 8 individuals clinically diagnosed and in treatment for restricting-type anorexia nervosa (seven women and one man), and 14 healthy individuals with no digestive or neurological symptoms (10

Treatment effects of distal movement of lower arch with miniscrews in the retromolar area compared with miniscrews in the posterior area of the maxillary.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of group distal movement of lower teeth obtained with the aid of direct usage of miniscrews in the retromolar area and indirect usage of miniscrews in the posterior area of the maxillary. METHODS: Nineteen patients with mild-to-moderate class III malocclusion (4 males and 15 females) were divided into 2 groups. Ten patients (2 males and 8 females; mean age, 20.7 ± 2.5 years) in group 1 were treated by miniscrews in the retromolar area. Nine patients (2 males and 7 females; mean age, 21.5 ± 3.7 years) in group 2 were treated by minisc

Psoriasis, psoriatic arthropathy and relapsing orbital myositis.

Orbital myositis is an inflammatory disorder of the orbital muscles causing orbital pain and restriction of eye movements. Although rare in children, it is most frequently seen after orbital trauma or as a post-infectious process. We describe a child with chronic relapsing psoriasis, juvenile psoriatic arthritis and relapsing bilateral orbital myositis.

Does joint hypermobility exacerbate altered landing and jumping strategies in adolescents with fibromyalgia syndrome compared to controls?

BACKGROUND: Joint hypermobility is common in children and persists in various genetic and connective tissue disorders, including conditions characterized by chronic musculoskeletal pain (i.e. Juvenile Fibromyalgia Syndrome), which involves movement dysfunction. It is unclear if joint hypermobility contributes to this dysfunction. This study investigated whether generalized joint hypermobility is associated with altered landing/jumping biomechanics in adolescents with juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome compared to controls. METHODS: Adolescents with juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome and hypermobility
