Abnormal functional connectivity under somatosensory stimulation in migraine: a multi-frequency magnetoencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: Although altered neural networks have been demonstrated in recent MEG (magnetoencephalography) research in migraine patients during resting state, it is unknown whether this alteration can be detected in task-related networks. The present study aimed to investigate the abnormalities of the frequency-specific somatosensory-related network in migraine patients by using MEG. METHODS: Twenty-two migraineurs in the interictal phase and twenty-two sex- and age-matched healthy volunteers were studied using a whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) system. Electrical stimuli were delivere

Iterative fully convolutional neural networks for automatic vertebra segmentation and identification.

Precise segmentation and anatomical identification of the vertebrae provides the basis for automatic analysis of the spine, such as detection of vertebral compression fractures or other abnormalities. Most dedicated spine CT and MR scans as well as scans of the chest, abdomen or neck cover only part of the spine. Segmentation and identification should therefore not rely on the visibility of certain vertebrae or a certain number of vertebrae. We propose an iterative instance segmentation approach that uses a fully convolutional neural network to segment and label vertebrae one after the other,

Comparative analysis of the vertebral pneumatization in pterosaurs (Reptilia: Pterosauria) and extant birds (Avialae: Neornithes).

Birds and pterosaurs have pneumatic bones, a feature likely related to their flight capabilities but whose evolution and origin is still poorly understood. Pneumatic foramina are present on the external surface of the bone and are reliable indicators of post-cranial skeletal pneumatization present in Pterosauria, Eusauropoda, and Neotheropoda. Here, we carried out a qualitative analysis of the position, size and number of pneumatic foramina of the cervical and thoracic/dorsal vertebrae of pterosaurs and birds, as they have the potential to challenge hypotheses about the emergence and evolution

Are inferior facetectomies adequate and suitable for surgical treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis?

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. BACKGROUND: Inferior facetectomies, with the utilization of segmental pedicle screw constructs for corrective fixation, can provide adequate flexibility and post less risk of neural tissue and blood loss. We analyzed outcomes of surgical treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using inferior facetectomies and segmental pedicle screw constructs. We hypothesized that adequate main curve correction and suitable surgical outcomes would be observed using this technique. METHODS: We reviewed 38 AIS patients who underwent inferior facetectomies and se

Altered Functional Connectivity and Brain Network Property in Pregnant Women With Cleft Fetuses.

Non-syndromic clefts of the lip and/or palate (NSCLP) is the most common congenital anomaly in the craniofacial region. NSCLP is a highly gene-associated malformation. We speculate that pregnant women with NSCLP fetuses (pregnancies with NSCLP) may have specific brain changes during pregnancy. To explore characteristic brain function changes of pregnancies with NSCLP, we analyzed resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) data of 42 pregnant women (21 pregnancies with NSCLP and 21 pregnancies with normal fetuses) to compare intergroup differences of (fractional) amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALF

Cranial nerve V2 and Vidian nerve trauma secondary to lateral pterygoid recess encephalocele repair.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of adverse sequelae related to trauma of cranial nerve V2 (V2) and the Vidian nerve (VN) during endoscopic pterygoid recess repair (PRR) of lateral sphenoid encephalocele is insufficiently reported in the medical literature. As part of our quality assessment and improvement program we sought to analyze the incidence and severity of V2 and VN injury during a 9-year experience (2010-2018) with PRR. METHODS: Hypoesthesia, paresthesia, and dry eye and their impact on patient quality of life were sought through chart review and a self-reported 0 to 5 Likert scale for each

Spontaneous correction of sagittal spinopelvic malalignment after decompression surgery without corrective fusion procedure for lumbar spinal stenosis and its impact on clinical outcomes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The impact of a positive sagittal vertical axis (SVA) on the surgical outcome for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) remains unclear, because sagittal imbalance in LSS may partly result from the tendency of patients to lean forward to reduce symptoms. Such an abnormality could be normalized by decompression surgery alone without corrective fusion. As this spontaneous correction is not well known, some surgeons perform only neural decompression in patients with positive SVA and decreased lumbar lordosis (LL), unless flatback-related symptoms are present, whereas other surgeons add correct

Roles of posterior parietal and dorsal premotor cortices in relative pitch processing: Comparing musical intervals to lexical tones.

Humans use time-varying pitch patterns to convey information in music and speech. Recognition of musical melodies and lexical tones relies on relative pitch (RP), the ability to identify intervals between two pitches. RP processing in music is usually more fine-grained than that in tonal languages. In Western music, there are twelve pitch categories within an octave, whereas there are only three level (non-glide) lexical tones in Taiwanese (or Taiwanese Hokkien, a tonal language). The present study aimed at comparing the neural substrates underlying RP processing of musical melodic intervals w

Safe Margin beyond Dens Tips to Ventral Dura in Anterior Odontoid Screw Fixation : Analysis of Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography Scan of Odontoid Process.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior odontoid screw fixation is a safe and effective method for the treatment of odontoid fractures. The surgical technique is recommended for perforation of the apical cortex of the dens by the lag screw. However, overpenetration of the apical cortex may lead to potentially serious complications such as damages of adjacent vascular and neural structures. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scan to evaluate the safe margin beyond dens tip to ventral dura for anterior odontoid screw fixation. METHODS: We retrospectively

Brain network dynamics in the human articulatory loop.

OBJECTIVE: The articulatory loop is a fundamental component of language function, involved in the short-term buffer of auditory information followed by its vocal reproduction. We characterized the network dynamics of the human articulatory loop, using invasive recording and stimulation. METHODS: We measured high-gamma activity70-110 Hz recorded intracranially when patients with epilepsy either only listened to, or listened to and then reproduced two successive tones by humming. We also conducted network analyses, and analyzed behavioral responses to cortical stimulation. RESULTS: Presentatio

Texture based skin lesion abruptness quantification to detect malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Abruptness of pigment patterns at the periphery of a skin lesion is one of the most important dermoscopic features for detection of malignancy. In current clinical setting, abrupt cutoff of a skin lesion determined by an examination of a dermatologist. This process is subjective, nonquantitative, and error-prone. We present an improved computational model to quantitatively measure abruptness of a skin lesion over our previous method. To achieve this, we quantitatively analyze the texture features of a region within the lesion boundary. This region is bounded by an interior border l

Effect of fasudil on cognitive function following status convulsion in rats.

Fasudil has been demonstrated to possess a protective effect in neural injury; however, its protective effect on convulsive brain injury remains to be assessed. The aim of the present study was to investigate the latent mechanism and effect of fasudil on cognitive function following status convulsion (SC) in rats. Initially, to determine the effects of SC, the expression levels of Ras homolog gene family, member A (RhoA)/Rho‑associated protein kinase (ROCK) signaling pathway‑associated proteins were measured by western blot analysis in 16 rats. To investigate the effects of fasudil on cognitiv

Facing mixed emotions: Analytic and holistic perception of facial emotion expressions engages separate brain networks.

The ability to decode facial emotions is of primary importance for human social interactions; yet, it is still debated how we analyze faces to determine their expression. Here we compared the processing of emotional face expressions through holistic integration and/or local analysis of visual features, and determined which brain systems mediate these distinct processes. Behavioral, physiological, and brain responses to happy and angry faces were assessed by presenting congruent global configurations of expressions (e.g., happy top+happy bottom), incongruent composite configurations (e.g., angr

Expression pattern in retinal photoreceptors of POMGnT1, a protein involved in muscle-eye-brain disease.

PURPOSE: The POMGNT1 gene, encoding protein O-linked-mannose β-1,2-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 1, is associated with muscle-eye-brain disease (MEB) and other dystroglycanopathies. This gene's lack of function or expression causes hypoglycosylation of α-dystroglycan (α-DG) in the muscle and the central nervous system, including the brain and the retina. The ocular symptoms of patients with MEB include retinal degeneration and detachment, glaucoma, and abnormal electroretinogram. Nevertheless, the POMGnT1 expression pattern in the healthy mammalian retina has not yet been investigated. In th

Retinal Microglial Activation Following Topical Application of Intracellular Toll-Like Receptor Ligands.

PURPOSE: We previously have reported that application of the intracellular toll-like receptor (TLR)-9 ligand CpG-ODN onto the injured corneal surface induces widespread inflammation within the eye, including the retina. We tested the hypothesis that topical application of two other intracellular TLR agonists, Poly I:C and R848, would cause retinal microglial activation and migration into the subretinal space. METHODS: C57BL/6J wild-type and Cx3cr1gfp/+ mice were anesthetized and received central corneal abrasions followed by topical application of Poly I:C (TLR3 agonist), R848 (TLR7/8 agonist

Altered hippocampal-parahippocampal function during stimulus encoding: a potential indicator of genetic liability for schizophrenia.

IMPORTANCE: Declarative memory-the ability to learn, store, and retrieve information-has been consistently reported to be altered in schizophrenia, and hippocampal-parahippocampal dysfunction has been implicated in this deficit. To elucidate the possible role of genetic risk factors in such findings, it is necessary to study healthy relatives of patients with schizophrenia who carry risk-associated genes but not the confounding factors related to the disorder. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether altered brain responses, particularly in the hippocampus and parahippocampus, during the encoding ph
