The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the distribution of protein-energy malnutrition, anemia and hypovitaminosis A in relation to accessibility and size of rural lands. With the advent of effective antiviral treatment for disseminated herpes infection it has become important to be able to make a firm clinical diagnosis of this condition. We undertook a retrospective analysis of 20 patients with disseminated herpes simplex infection diagnosed at necropsy to derive useful clinical pointers to this severe form of the disease. Pressure, hygiene, spasticity and chronic infection are the important local factors in pressure ulceration. Hypoproteinemia, nutritional deficiency and anemia are the systemic factors. Careful attention to local wound care and dietary supplements is required. Muscle and myocutaneous flaps may provide better coverage than the traditional random pattern flaps. Flaps with sensibility have theoretic advantages but need further investigation.

The nutritional status, parasite prevalence and immediate skin hypersensitivity to Ascaris and Schistosoma antigens were determined for 185 schoolchildren living in two ujamaa villages in Northern Tanzania. A prospective study was undertaken of 254 infants and children admitted with gastroenteritis to the Children's Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during the period 1 September 1980 to 1 February 1981. Children with measles treated either in hospital or as outpatients were examined for clinical or laboratory evidence of oropharyngeal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. In a clinical setting where malnutrition and far-advanced tuberculosis are common, experience with fluorescence microscopy of gastric washings was evaluated in 536 specimens. These specimens were obtained from 191 Haitian children whose illness was difficult to diagnose. Thirty malnourished and 25 well-nourished children were studied six to 31 days after the onset of a measles rash. Evidence of the virus was found in 40% of the malnourished children but in none of the well-nourished controls.
