Pectoralis major transfer for treatment of irreparable subscapularis tear: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Irreparable ruptures of the subscapularis tendon lead to impaired function of the shoulder and presents a surgically complex problem. Transfer of the pectoralis major tendon has been reported as a possible treatment option. The purpose of this systematic review is to critically examine the outcomes of pectoralis major transfers for the treatment of irreparable subscapularis tears. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed using search of electronic databases. No language restrictions were applied. Case reports, review articles, and operative techniques without outc

Tendon rupture as an adverse effect of rasagiline.

A 66-year-old woman with advanced Parkinson disease (PD) was referred to our center for an adjustment of her antiparkinsonian medication. To reduce daily off-time, we introduced rasagiline 1 mg/d. Three days after starting this new treatment, she presented with intense arthralgia that symmetrically affected the shoulders, hands, and hips without myalgia. Ten days later, while walking, she experienced acute pain on the inner side of her right thigh, with the absence of any trauma. Findings of ultrasonography confirming the diagnosis of partial avulsion of the right harmstrings. Rasagiline was s

Clinical recovery of two hip adductor longus ruptures: a case-report of a soccer player.

BACKGROUND: Non-operative treatment of acute hip adductor longus ruptures in athletes has been described in the literature. However, very limited information concerning the recovery of this type of injury exists. This case represented a unique possibility to study the recovery of two acute adductor longus ruptures, using novel, reliable and validated assessment methods. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year old male soccer player (Caucasian) sustained two subsequent acute adductor longus ruptures, one in each leg. The injuries occurred 10 months apart, and were treated non-surgically in both situation

Spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon in a tailor.

A spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon is associated with rheumatoid arthritis, fractures of the wrist, systemic or local steroids and repetitive, and excessive abnormal motion of the wrist joint. The authors encountered a case of a spontaneous rupture of the EPL tendon. The patient had no predisposing factors including trauma or steroid injection. Although the patient had a positive rheumatoid factor, he did not demonstrate other clinical or radiological findings of rheumatoid arthritis. During surgery, the EPL tendon was found to be ruptured at the extensor retina

Acute rupture of extensor pollicis longus tendon due to avulsed fracture of the second metacarpal base: a case report.

Acute tendon rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) is rare. We present acute EPL tendon rupture associated with avulsed fracture of the second metacarpal at the insertion of extensor carpi radialis longus. Tendon rupture of the EPL was repaired with end-to-end suture and avulsed fracture of the second metacarpal base was treated with open reduction and internal fixation.

US of the shoulder: rotator cuff and non-rotator cuff disorders.

Ultrasonography (US) has been shown to be an effective imaging modality in the evaluation of both rotator cuff and non-rotator cuff disorders, usually serving in a complementary role to magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder. US technique for shoulder examination depends on patient positioning, scanning protocol for every tendon and anatomic part, and dynamic imaging. The primary US signs for rotator cuff supraspinatus tendon tears are tendon nonvisualization for complete tears, focal tendon defect for full-thickness tears, a hypoechoic defect of the articular side of the tendon for an art

[The effect of repair of paratendon in tendon healing].

In order to investigate the effect of repair of paratendon in tendon healing, two different ways were performed to repair the transected extensor tendons of chick's toe. End to end suture of the extensor tenon was performed in group 1 while the paratendon was also repaired simultaneously in addition to suture of the tendon in group 2. Gross observation and histological examination were undertaken in the 3rd and 6th week after operation. The result showed, in group 1, extensive adhesion and irregular proliferation of fibroblasts was found in the 3rd week, severe adhesion and irregular arrangeme

Free temporal fascial flap for coverage and extensor tendon reconstruction.

An improved method for reconstructing injured tendons of the dorsum of the hand is presented. We transferred a two-layered temporal fascial flap to the hand and inserted the rolled, deep temporal fascia between the stump of the extensor tendons. This procedure can improve extensor tendon function with minimal scarring in spite of the limitation of available tissue.

Geriatric shoulder pain: common causes and their management.

Shoulder pain in the geriatric patient is a common presentation encountered by primary care physicians. Proper evaluation requires an understanding of the pertinent anatomy, a thorough physical examination, and a knowledge of common shoulder disorders that occur in this population. This article provides information needed to evaluate the geriatric patient with shoulder pain. Common causes of shoulder pain--both intrinsic and extrinsic--and their management will be reviewed.

Modified latissimus dorsi and teres major transfer for external rotation deficit of the shoulder.

Variable impairment occurs following birth associated brachial plexus injury. Muscle transpositions have evolved in response to patient need for functional reconstruction. Loss of external rotation limits the ability to perform activities with the arm in an overhead position. A modification of the combined latissimus dorsi and teres major transfer is described by means of which increased excursion of the transfer may be achieved.

Vastus medialis myocutaneous and myocutaneous-tendinous composite flaps.

This report describes a new myocutaneous territory and introduces a new myocutaneous flap based on the vastus medialis muscle. Dissection, arterial dye perfusion, and specimen angiography of 32 fresh cadaver legs defined a vastus medialis myocutaneous territory directly overlying the muscle and also defined a segment of quadriceps femoris tendon vascularized by the muscle. This vascular unit provides a myocutaneous flap for closure of anterior knee defects. This flap can also be designed as a composite myocutaneous-tendinous flap by inclusion of the vascularized quadriceps femoris tendon segme
