The relationship of pre-bone-marrow transplant recipient and donor cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody level to post-transplant recipient CMV excretion was investigated. CMV excretion was found to be related to pre-transplant recipient serological status, but not to level of antibody. This therefore contrasts with herpes simplex virus (HSV), for which pre-transplant antibody level in recipients predicts post-transplant HSV excretion.

Two patients with Wilson's disease (WD) underwent orthotopic liver transplantation, one for subacute liver failure and the other for severe oesophageal haemorrhage. After transplantation both patients fully recovered within five months, and copper metabolism returned to normal. Follow-up examinations were continued for 4 and 6 years. Clinical as well as electrophysiological testing in these two patients yielded better results than in most of 12 WD-patients being conventionally treated for a similar period or even longer.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking and alcohol consumption are two harmful yet socially accepted habits in Poland. The main focus of this study was to assess patterns of tobacco and alcohol consumption in Polish transplant patients.
METHODS: A survey was conducted between June and November 2023 at a transplantation center in Poland. The participants in the study were kidney, liver, or pancreas transplant recipients (aged 19-81 years). A structured questionnaire was applied to assess self-reported use of tobacco and alcohol in the pre-transplantation (pre-tx) and post-transplantation (post-tx) periods.

BACKGROUND: Humoral immune responses in cytomegalovirus (CMV) are not studied well. Pre-transplant CMV immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels (Pre-Tx IgG) could influence the occurrence of post-transplant CMV infections.
OBJECTIVE: Correlation between pre-Tx IgG and post-Tx risk of acquiring CMV infection was investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 146 liver Tx recipients, not on CMV prophylaxis, were included. Pre-Tx IgG in donor (D) and recipient (R) were estimated and all the recipients were followed up for 1 year for CMV infections.
