Inspecting Vulnerability to Depression From Social Media Affect.

Affect describes a person's feelings or emotions in reaction to stimuli, and affective expressions were found to be related to depression in social media. This study examined the longitudinal pattern of affect on a popular Chinese social media platform: Weibo. We collected 1,664 Chinese Weibo users' self-reported CES-D scores via surveys and 3 years' worth of Weibo posts preceding the surveys. First, we visualized participants' social media affect and found evidence of cognitive vulnerability indicated by affect patterns: Users with high depression symptoms tended to use not only more negative

Therapy of Parkinson's Disease Subtypes.

Early descriptions of subtypes of Parkinson's disease (PD) are dominated by the approach of predetermined groups. Experts defined, from clinical observation, groups based on clinical or demographic features that appeared to divide PD into clinically distinct subsets. Common bases on which to define subtypes have been motor phenotype (tremor dominant vs akinetic-rigid or postural instability gait disorder types), age, nonmotor dominant symptoms, and genetic forms. Recently, data-driven approaches have been used to define PD subtypes, taking an unbiased statistical approach to the identification

Wearable-Sensor-based Detection and Prediction of Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease: A Review.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a serious gait disturbance, common in mid- and late-stage Parkinson's disease, that affects mobility and increases fall risk. Wearable sensors have been used to detect and predict FOG with the ultimate aim of preventing freezes or reducing their effect using gait monitoring and assistive devices. This review presents and assesses the state of the art of FOG detection and prediction using wearable sensors, with the intention of providing guidance on current knowledge, and identifying knowledge gaps that need to be filled and challenges to be considered in future studie

Black-box Model Identification of Physical Activity in Type-l Diabetes Patients.

In this paper we consider the problem of predicting future values of glucose in type-1 diabetes. In particular, we investigate the benefit of including physical activity, measured by an off-the-shelf wearable device, to other physiologic signals frequently used to predict blood-glucose concentration, namely injected insulin, carbohydrates intake, and past glucose samples measured by a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensor. Derivation of individualized predictors is crucial to cope with the wide inter- and intra-subject variability: learning and updating patient-specific models of the gluc

Greywater characterization and loadings - Physicochemical treatment to promote onsite reuse.

Greywater is the wastewater produced in bathtubs, showers, hand basins, kitchen sinks, dishwashers and laundry machines. Segregation of greywater and blackwater and on site greywater treatment in order to promote its reuse for toilet flushing and/or garden irrigation is an interesting option especially in water deficient areas. The objective of this study was to characterize the different greywater sources in Greek households and to evaluate the performance of alternative physicochemical treatment systems to treat several types of greywater. Based on the results average daily greywater product

Social venue range and referral chain impact: Implications for the sampling of hidden communities.

BACKGROUND: It has been argued that the success of respondent-driven sampling (RDS) in generating unbiased estimates for epidemiologic outcomes depends on participants' abilities to generate long referral chains. While this is thought to depend on the number of people participants know in the target population, this idea is rarely tested. Furthermore, little attention has been paid to the role of other aspects of social connectedness in recruitment, such as participants' involvement in local clubs and venues. METHODS: We examine whether the recruitment potential of young Black men who have se

"I Don't Want to Be an Ostrich": Managing Mothers' Uncertainty during BRCA1/2 Genetic Counseling.

Families who face genetic disease risk must learn how to grapple with complicated uncertainties about their health and future on a long-term basis. Women who undergo BRCA 1/2 genetic testing describe uncertainty related to personal risk as well as their loved ones', particularly daughters', risk. The genetic counseling setting is a prime opportunity for practitioners to help mothers manage uncertainty in the moment but also once they leave a session. Uncertainty Management Theory (UMT) helps to illuminate the various types of uncertainty women encounter and the important role of communication

Titanium: a review on exposure, release, penetration, allergy, epidemiology, and clinical reactivity.

Exposure to titanium (Ti) from implants and from personal care products as nanoparticles (NPs) is common. This article reviews exposure sources, ion release, skin penetration, allergenic effects, and diagnostic possibilities. We conclude that human exposure to Ti mainly derives from dental and medical implants, personal care products, and foods. Despite being considered to be highly biocompatible relative to other metals, Ti is released in the presence of biological fluids and tissue, especially under certain circumstances, which seem to be more likely with regard to dental implants. Although
