An all too common cause of urologic consultation is the inability to place a urethral catheter. Often other health care providers have unsuccessfully attempted catheter placement. Urethral false passages, perforations, and edema are common sequelae. Diseases such as urethral strictures, bladder neck contractures, and prostate cancer are often the underlying etiologies for failed catheterization. The effect of siliconized latex urinary catheters on the in vitro activity of amikacin, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and meropenem against Pseudomonas aeruginosa was determined by a microdilution assay. The rate of urine formation is a primary index of renal function, but no techniques are currently available to accurately measure low rates of urine flow on a continuous basis, such as are normally found in rats. We developed a gravimetric method for the dynamic measurement of urine flow in anesthetized rats. Urethral diverticulum in women is not a frequent disease. The diagnosis of this lesion is based on history and careful physical examination looking for a swelling on the anterior vaginal wall. Poor operative risk patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated as outpatients with local hyperthermia without sedation, for 1 hour, twice weekly. As a result of the treatment it was possible in 61% to remove indwelling catheters and voiding was resumed for up to 61 months after treatment. 70% of those without indwelling catheters improved clinically and remained so for 67 months after completion of treatment. Regeneration of the ureter and renal pelvis from a transected and anastomosed strip of the ureteral wall was examined in 20 dogs. The latter were divided into two groups: group A, dogs operated without receiving any drug, and group B, dogs which received 1.5 mg prednisone and 1.5 azathioprine/kg body weight/day before the operation and throughout the postoperative period. Diabetes insipidus was diagnosed in a 6-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow with a history of recurrent fever, ketosis, lymphadenopathy, and inappetence. The diagnosis was based on the clinical findings, response to exogenous vasopressin, and lack of urine concentration in a water deprivation test. The disease gradually regressed over a period of 1 year and did not recur.
