Zebra finches produce soft laryngeal whistles during thermal panting that are not adaptive vocal signals.

Birds and mammals converged upon the same physical mechanism of vocal fold vibration1,2 to produce the wide variety of communicative vocal signals critical for their reproduction, social interactions, survival, and speciation.3,4,5 Recent work reported high-frequency (7-11 kHz) vocalizations in zebra finches,6 termed "heat" or "incubation" calls, that are suggested to have close-range communicative relevance in the context of global warming.6,7 However, their acoustics are poorly described, and by what biophysical mechanism they are produced remains unknown. We recorded heat-associated vocaliz…

3D Reconstruction of Phonatory Glottal Shape and Volume: Effects of Neuromuscular Activation.

INTRODUCTION: Although phonatory glottal posture and airflow pulse shape affect voice quality, studies to date have been limited by visualization of vocal fold (VF) vibration from a superior view. We performed a 3D reconstruction of VF vibratory motion during phonation from a medial view and assessed the glottal volume waveform and resulting acoustics as a function of neuromuscular stimulation. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine hemilarynx phonation. METHODS: Across 121 unique combinations of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation, the hemilarynx was exc…

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions in human newborns and adults. I. Frequency effects.

This study varied stimulus frequency and recorded distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in human newborns and adults. Because of outer and middle ear acoustics, the same auditory input resulted in higher newborn stimulus sound pressure levels across a broad frequency range in the occluded outer ear canal. Noise levels in the canal were 5-15 dB lower for adults at frequencies less than about 3 kHz. The 2 f1-f2 DPOAE was the most reliably recorded DPOAE except at the lowest frequencies assessed. At the lowest frequencies the 2 f2-f1 DPOAE was more frequently recorded than any other D…

Early Cochlear Implantation Allows Deaf Children to Control Voice Pitch and Loudness independently.

OBJECTIVE: Congenitally deaf children with a cochlear implant (CI) improve their speech production intelligibility, but their prosody, including stress and intonation produced by voice pitch and loudness changes, often differs from normal hearing people, which affects their fluent oral communication. This study is aimed to clarify abnormal characteristics of voice pitch and loudness control in CI recipients using a newly developed visually guided pitch change task. METHODS: We included 13 normal hearing volunteers (NH group) and 17 congenitally deaf CI users who showed good speech intelligibi

Chronic Noise Affects Middle Ear Resonance and Absorbance in Industrial Workers.

BACKGROUND: The effect of chronic noise on the middle ear is not fully known. This study aimed to evaluate the middle ear functions of metal workers exposed to chronic noise using wideband tympanometry. METHODS: In this study, 62 male workers exposed to chronic noise and 30 healthy men were included. Workers exposed to chronic noise were divided into 2 groups according to their pure tone averages. Totally 30 workers (60 ears) with pure tone average less than 20 dB were included in group I, and 32 workers (64 ears) with pure tone average more than 20 dB were included in group II. All individua

Hyposalivation Affecting Womens' Voice.

OBJECTIVES: Balanced hydration is crucial for optimal physiological function, whereas hypohydration may cause adverse effects. Like many other organs, the larynx is negatively affected by hypohydration, potentially affecting voice production. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine voice properties in women diagnosed with dry-mouth. METHODS: Twenty-four women diagnosed with hyposalivation and 24 age-matched controls were recruited. All participants underwent three sialometry tests for quantifying oral-dryness. These tests were conducted in three conditions: after 2-hour fasting, a

[Objective hearing aid fitting].

In many cases speech and pure tone audiometry are not practicable. Therefore, the hearing aid fitting is based on objective techniques, like the measurement of the stapedius-reflex threshold or acoustically evoked neural responses. In particular, brain stem responses are very helpful for an objective hearing-aid fitting. They represent the full scale of hearing dynamics and supply direct information for selection and adjustment of the hearing aid. Control of the fitting can also be effected directly by measuring brain stem responses.

Cough biomarkers for diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory disease: a systematic review.

Cough is a common and physiologically informative component of respiratory morbidity, but its potential for diagnosing and monitoring disease is not thoroughly investigated. This systematic review synthesised the literature on algorithmic and statistical models analysing cough acoustics for diagnosing or monitoring respiratory conditions. Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, five databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and CENTRAL) were systematically searched for studies published from January 2010 to June 2025. Eligible s…

The Effects of Lexical Stress, Lexical Type, and Voicing Context on Symptom Expression in Individuals With Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of lexical stress, voicing context, and lexical type on voice symptoms in individuals with adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD). METHOD: Forty-eight individuals with AdLD produced sentences containing a balanced set of words that varied across the linguistic factors of onset voicing, lexical stress, and lexical type. AdLD symptoms (frequency shifts, creaky voice, and voicing breaks) were then identified from the speech acoustics and compared across these factors. An exploratory analysis was performed on recordings from 22 age- and se…
