Effect of Cabergoline on weight and glucose metabolism in patients with acromegaly.

PURPOSE: Cabergoline (CAB) has shown to have benefic effects on the metabolism in different clinical settings but its metabolic role in acromegaly disease has not been studied yet. Aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of CAB on glucose metabolism and weight in patients with acromegaly. METHODS: All patients with acromegaly undergoing continuous treatment with CAB for at least 6 months were retrospectively screened. Exclusion criteria were discontinuation of CAB for more than one month, change of antidiabetic or other therapy for acromegaly, concomitant untreated hormonal deficiency, in

A systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative studies exploring GPs' and nurses' perspectives on discussing weight with patients with overweight and obesity in primary care.

Guidelines and evidence suggest primary care clinicians should give opportunistic interventions to motivate weight loss, but these rarely occur in practice. We sought to examine why by systematically reviewing qualitative research examining general practitioners' ('GPs') and nurses' views of discussing weight with patients. We systematically searched English language publications (1945-2018) to identify qualitative interview and focus group studies. Thematic methods were used to synthesise the findings from these papers. We synthesised the studies by identifying second-order themes (explanatio

The Prevention Of WEight Regain in diabetes type 2 (POWER) study: the effectiveness of adding a combined psychological intervention to a very low calorie diet, design and pilot data of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is of major pathogenetic importance to type 2 diabetes, it contributes to poor glycemic control and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Over 80% of patients with diabetes type 2 are overweight. To achieve a more favourable risk profile, changes in diet and lifestyle are needed. However, current treatment programs for obese DM type 2 patients are not effective in the long term. In this RCT, we compare the effectiveness of a Combined Psychological Intervention (CPI) and usual care in maintaining the favourable effects on weight and risk profile during 2 years of fol

Association between handgrip strength and muscle mass in children 6 to 10 years old.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sarcopenia, defined as a muscle mass loss and function, is increasingly recognized in pediatric populations, particularly in childhood obesity. Therefore, it is necessary to have measurements that can distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Methods of body composition such as Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) provide accurate assessments of body composition, but they are resource-intensive and impractical for routine monitoring in clinical or community settings. To address this, handgrip strength (HGS) may be used for assessing muscle mass. This study investigates t

Compulsive exercise in higher levels of eating disorder care: Trajectory of change over time among adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

Compulsive exercise is commonly observed in adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) and relates to more severe eating disorder pathology and worse outcomes. Within higher levels of care (HLOC) for eating disorders, physical activity is often restricted in an attempt to reduce compulsive exercise; yet, the effectiveness of these restrictions across levels of care remains understudied. The current study examined how compulsive exercise presents and changes within HLOC as individuals with AN transition from settings with greater supervision to those with more autonomy over movement. Given the central ro

Apparent diffusion coefficient on rat brain and nerves intoxicated with methylmercury.

The effects of methylmercury chloride (MMC) on the degenerative changes in rat brain and cranial nerves were studied. Twelve Wistar rats were divided into two equal groups. The rat model of methylmercury intoxication (MMC group) was made by subcutaneously administering 10 mg mercury/g body weight daily for 7 days. Control group rats were infused with the same amount of normal saline during this period. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements were performed before and 14 days after the first MMC administration, using a 4.7-T MR system. No significant focal changes were observed on T1- and

Presence of Mood and/or Anxiety Disorders Does Not Affect Success of Weight Management Therapies in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and resultant steatohepatitis (MASH) have been linked to psychiatric comorbidities. The treatment of MASLD/MASH primarily relies upon weight loss, where achieving a 7% total body weight loss is recommended to improve steatohepatitis. We aimed to determine whether achieving a 7% total body weight loss (TBWL) in MASLD/MASH patients was significantly different in the presence of a mood and/or anxiety disorder in an interdisciplinary clinic that integrates weight management and hepatology care. METHODS: We condu

Does Salmonella co-infection worsen Histomonas meleagridis infection in turkeys?

Histomoniasis, caused by Histomonas meleagridis (HM), leads to severe cecal and hepatic damage in turkeys. Although Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) commonly colonizes in the cecum, its influence on the progression of Histomoniasis remains unclear. This study was conducted to evaluate whether ST co-infection alters clinical outcomes, intestinal integrity, or performance in HM-challenged turkey poults. A total of 336 one-day-old male poults were allocated into four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design with 6 replicates/treatment. Negative control (NC), HM challenge (T1), ST challenge (T2), and HM+
