Airway epithelial cells (AECs) are important in asthma as they are the first cells to encounter pathogens/allergens. The direct effect of testosterone and its synthetic analogs on the maintenance of human erythroid progenitor cells (BFU-E) and GM-CFC was studied in suspension cultures. To avoid interference by serum components, the experiments were conducted in serum-free media containing insulin, transferrin, selenium, BSA, and alpha-thioglycerol. A case of hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) initially manifesting as endomyocardial disease in a 21-year-old man is presented. The diagnosis of HES was made according to the Chusid's criteria. Myeloproliferative disorders were excluded and corticosteroid therapy with prednisone at a dose of 1 mg/kg/d was started immediately.
