INTRODUCTION: Cytoreduction Surgery with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is a treatment option for patients with peritoneal metastatic cancer. This procedure has been shown to improve survival, however, patients are often left with abdominal wall and soft tissue defects requiring further surgical correction. We aim to assess the safety and clinical outcomes of abdominal reconstruction performed concurrent with CRS/HIPEC.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review on patients with peritoneal metastases who received CRS/HIPEC therapy and abdominal wall reconstructi

BACKGROUND: The role of surgery in treating children with functional constipation (FC) is controversial, because of the efficacy of bowel management programs. This case series is comprised of failures: 43 children, spanning 25 years' practice, who had megarectosigmoid (MRS) and unremitting constipation.
PURPOSE: To determine whether these children were helped by surgery, and to contribute to formulating a standard of care for children with megarectum (MR) and/or redundancy of the sigmoid colon (MS) who fail medical management.
METHOD: We describe our selection criteria and the procedures we

AIM: Advances in laparoscopic techniques combined with enhanced recovery pathways have led to faster recuperation and discharge after colorectal surgery. Peripheral nerve blockade using transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks reduce opioid requirements and provide better analgesia for laparoscopic colectomies than do inactive controls. This double-blind randomized study was performed to compare TAP blocks using bupivacaine with standardized wound infiltration with local anaesthetic (LA).
METHOD: Seventy-one patients were randomized to receive either TAP block or wound infiltration. The TAP b…

BACKGROUND: Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is performed in patients with ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis where the majority of patients are sexually active. Laparoscopic surgery is becoming the preferred technique for most colorectal interventions, and we examined postoperative sexual function and body image compared to those after open surgery IPAA.
METHODS: Patients treated with IPAA in the period from October 2008 to March 2012 were included. Evaluation of sexual function, body image, and quality of life was performed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI)

We describe three cases of resected pulmonary metastasis from postoperative colorectal cancer after preoperative 5-fluorouracil, Leucovorin, oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) chemotherapy. The first case is a 38-year-old man who underwent low anterior resection for rectal cancer in 2003. Subsequently, left lung metastasis occurred in February 2009. FOLFOX chemotherapy was administered, resulting in a partial response (PR) of tumor size. Post-chemotherapy, segmental resection of he S1+2 segments of the left lung was performed in May 2009. A pathological diagnosis of Grade 1b was made. The patient remained r

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that hepatic arterial infusion of chemotherapy (HAI) after resection of colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) may improve patient's survival. The placement of a catheter in the hepatic artery at the time of hepatic surgery should therefore be considered in patients at high risk of hepatic recurrence. The aim of this study was to compare post-operative outcomes in patients who underwent at least a major hepatectomy (≥3 segments) for CRLM with or without catheter placement.
METHODS: From 2000 to 2010, 57 patients who underwent at least a major hepatectomy for CRL

PURPOSE: For treatment of rectal prolapse, abdominal approaches are generally offered to younger patients, whereas perineal, less invasive procedures are considered more beneficial in the elderly. The aim of this study was to analyze whether laparoscopic resection rectopexy (LRR) is suitable for older patients.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Patients who received LRR for rectal prolapse were selected from a prospective laparoscopic colorectal surgery database. Perioperative and long-term outcome were compared between patients <75 years old (group A) and ≥75 years old (group B).
RESULTS: Of 154 patients, …

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal carcinomatosis is an advanced form of cancer with poor prognosis that in the past was treated mainly palliatively. Today, the definitive approach to peritoneal surface malignancy involves peritonectomy, visceral resection and perioperative intra-abdominal hyperthermic chemotherapy. The anticipated results range from at least palliative to as far as intent to cure. Proper patient selection is mandatory.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy can extend survival, and with minor complications only, in patients w

BACKGROUND: Histologic growth patterns (HGPs) of both peritoneal metastasis (PM) and liver metastasis (LM) have emerged as prognostic factors for patients undergoing curative surgery for metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). The main objectives of the study were, first, to evaluate the correlation between PMHGP and LMHGP of CRC patients who underwent curative-intent cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and LM resection and, second, to assess the prognostic impact of HGP type.
METHODS: This retrospective bicentric study included patients treated with both CRS and LM resection for metastatic CRC. Histolog

BACKGROUND: The prognostic nutritional index (PNI), derived from serum albumin levels and lymphocyte counts, reflects both nutritional and immunologic status. This study aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative PNI and long-term oncologic outcomes and postoperative complications in patients undergoing curative resection for colorectal cancer (CRC).
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective analysis was conducted on 3045 patients with stage I-III CRC who underwent curative surgery at five Hallym University-affiliated hospitals between 2012 and 2023. Preoperative PNI, lymphocyte-to-mon

BACKGROUND: Digestive system malignancies frequently recur because occult lesions and microscopic residual disease may persist despite apparently complete resection. The authors evaluated an integrated fibroblast activation protein (FAP)-targeted theranostic workflow combining preoperative [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-46 positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), intraoperative radiopharmaceutical-guided robotic surgery, and postoperative [177Lu]Lu-FAPI-46 therapy.
METHODS: In this prospective translational feasibility study, 36 patients with colorectal (n = 24), gastric (n = 8), or pancreat

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer during pregnancy is rare but represents a major therapeutic challenge when standard oncological strategies conflict with fetal preservation. Locally advanced low rectal cancer is particularly complex because optimal management usually requires multimodal treatment, including pelvic radiotherapy, which is generally contraindicated during pregnancy.
CLINICAL CHALLENGE: We report the multidisciplinary management of a 44-year-old pregnant woman diagnosed at 15 weeks of gestation with a low rectal adenocarcinoma. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a cT3N0 tumor l
