OBJECTIVE: Cardiac mapping is an important diagnostic step in cardiac electrophysiology. One of its purposes is to generate a map of the depolarization sequence. This map is constructed in clinical routine either by directly analyzing cardiac electrograms (EGMs) recorded invasively or an estimate of these EGMs obtained by a noninvasive technique. Activation maps based on noninvasively estimated EGMs often show artefactual jumps in activation times. To overcome this problem, we present a new method to construct the activation maps from reconstructed unipolar EGMs.

The use of a low-power laser beam to characterize self-phase modulation (SPM) and bubble formation during thermal blooming (TB), as well as manipulation of the bubbles, is reported. First, a low-power 633 nm laser beam is used to characterize the induced refractive index profile during SPM of a focused 514 nm pump beam in absorbing liquid media, e.g., a solution of red dye in isopropyl alcohol. Important advances are being made in the fight against communicable diseases by using new digital tools. While they can be a challenge to deploy at-scale, GPS-enabled smartphones, electronic dashboards and computer models have multiple benefits. They can facilitate program operations, lead to new insights about the disease transmission and support strategic planning. Today, tools such as these are used to vaccinate more children against polio in Nigeria, reduce the malaria burden in Zambia and help predict the spread of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

A study has been undertaken to assess the feasibility of three-dimensional imaging of the dispersion of a non-absorbable tracer released into the colon of normal subjects. This paper presents a prototype parallel-processing decision support system, based on the ALICE graph reduction machine, for the differential diagnosis of psychotic, mood, and organic mental disorders in accordance with the American Psychiatric Association's revised third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Echogenicity and echostructure in sonomammography are essential criteria to determine the malignancy of a breast tumor. Looking for a correlation between echostructure of an ultrasound image and its histopathology a texture analysis was performed. Ultrasonic examinations were carried out by means of a 7.5-MHz linear scanner under standardized conditions. 71 mammasonographic findings were documented by video tape, each tumor in 2 dimensions. The asymmetric introduction of the CF3 unit is a powerful tool for modifying pharmacokinetic properties and slowing metabolic degradation in medicinal chemistry. A catalytic and enantioselective addition of α-CF3 enolates allows for expeditious access to functionalized chiral building blocks with CF3-containing stereogenicity. The computational studies reveal that the choice of ligand in a designed palladium-complex system regulates the regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of the asymmetric allylic alkyation of α-CF3 ketones and Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts.

A 24-year-old woman presented with periorbital pain, progressive diplopia, and restricted eye movement. Routine blood testing was normal except for increased levels of thyroid peroxidase autoantibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin autoantibody (TGAb). Orbital computed tomography revealed fusiform thickening of the rectus muscles belly, with tendon sparing, as in thyroid eye disease. Rectus muscle biopsy revealed isolated amyloidosis. Further workup showed no evidence of systemic amyloidosis.

The case of a 66-year-old woman with untreated diabetes mellitus who was admitted to our hospital with a fever, hypotension and an altered mental status is herein reported. Computed tomography revealed bilateral emphysematous pyelonephritis along with a splenic abscess. Blood and urine cultures grew Escherichia coli. Treatment with systemic antibiotics combined with the insertion of percutaneous and renoureteral catheters was successful. The patient was discharged and completed treatment without developing any subsequent complications.

We report a case in which a thoracoabdominal aneurysm was present in association with previously unknown critical spinal canal stenosis. In spite of using left heart bypass, systemic hypothermia, and controlled cerebrospinal fluid drainage for spinal cord protection, the patient developed paraplegia following aortic aneurysm repair. Computed tomography scan revealed critical stenosis of the spinal canal that was thought to be sufficient to produce spinal cord compression syndromes including paraplegia.

Bowel infarction commonly presents as an acute abdomen that rapidly progresses to severe shock. The diagnosis is often not clinically suspected. Three cases are described where the diagnosis was made during dynamic contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT), when gas was demonstrated in the portal venous system and liver. Two patients died during surgery, the third survived because of the prompt diagnosis made on CT, and subsequent surgical treatment. The radiological findings are reviewed.

Clinical and radiologic findings in a 73-year-old man who developed a systemic illness while receiving intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy for bladder cancer are presented. Thin-section chest computed tomographic findings included a diffuse pattern of small nodules consistent with miliary disease. Potential mechanisms explaining the pulmonary disease resulting from intravesical BCG treatment include a hypersensitivity reaction or actual BCG infection of the lungs.

Intracranial tuberculomas are rare in developed countries, occurring mostly in non-Caucasian patients. We describe a white Dutch patient with miliary tuberculosis, who was noted to have intracranial tuberculomas on computed tomographic scanning. During antituberculous chemotherapy the systemic tuberculosis was responding satisfactorily, while intracranial tuberculomas developed or enlarged. Although this caused anxiety and led to some changes in chemotherapy, the lesions eventually disappeared. Possible mechanisms of this paradoxical response are discussed.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be helpful in the assessment of eclampsia and preeclampsia with central nervous system symptomatology such as cortical blindness. We describe a rare case of complete binocular blindness postpartum with no other neurologic deficits, in which MRI abnormalities were undetected on computed tomography. The better soft-tissue discrimination of MRI may visualize important but subtle lesions which ultimately may help to explain the underlying pathophysiologic mechanism in such cases.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is usually associated with brain malformations or with anomalies outside the central nervous system. A colloid cyst of the third ventricle may give rise to hydrocephalus and even sudden death. The authors report the case of a 23-year-old man in whom both these uncommon conditions coexisted. The findings on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are described. The colloid cyst was completely excised through a frontal craniotomy and the patient made a smooth recovery.
