Written language skills in children with auditory brainstem implants.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the written language skills of children with auditory brainstem implants (ABI). METHODS: In this study, 15 children (from second to eighth grades) with ABI were evaluated for their written language abilities using a written expression skill assessment form. Five different features of written expression points were scored and analyzed, yielding a composite score for written expression skills. RESULTS: This study showed that all children with ABI needed more verbal cues than spontaneously written samples. Moreover, these children used short and simple senten

Effects of aging and hearing loss on perceptual and electrophysiological measures of pulse-rate discrimination.

Auditory temporal processing declines with age, leading to potential deleterious effects on communication. In young normal-hearing listeners, perceptual rate discrimination is rate limited around 300 Hz. It is not known whether this rate limitation is similar in older listeners with hearing loss. The purpose of this study was to investigate age- and hearing-loss-related rate limitations on perceptual rate discrimination, and age- and hearing-loss-related effects on neural representation of these stimuli. Younger normal-hearing, older normal-hearing, and older hearing-impaired listeners perform

Contribution of Linguistic Skills to Word Reading in DHH Students.

This study aims to examine the relative contributions of phonological awareness (PA), orthographical awareness (OA), morphological awareness (MA) and rapid automatized naming (RAN) to word reading accuracy and fluency in Chinese deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students. Measures of PA, OA, MA, RAN, word reading accuracy, and word reading fluency were administered to 133 DHH and 127 hearing students in Grades 4-6. After controlling for chronological age, hierarchical regression analysis showed that PA made an independent contribution to word reading accuracy and fluency among the DHH students. T

Evaluation of Machine Learning Algorithms and Explainability Techniques to Detect Hearing Loss From a Speech-in-Noise Screening Test.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of multivariate machine learning (ML) models applied to a speech-in-noise hearing screening test and investigate the contribution of the measured features toward hearing loss detection using explainability techniques. METHOD: Seven different ML techniques, including transparent (i.e., decision tree and logistic regression) and opaque (e.g., random forest) models, were trained and evaluated on a data set including 215 tested ears (99 with hearing loss of mild degree or higher and 116 with no hearing loss). Post hoc explainability te

Dynamic Current Focusing Compared to Monopolar Stimulation in a Take-Home Trial of Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared the performance of a dynamic partial tripolar cochlear implant speech encoding strategy termed dynamic current focusing (DCF) to monopolar stimulation (MP) using spectro-temporal, temporal, and speech-in-noise recognition testing. DESIGN: DCF is a strategy that utilizes tripolar or high partial tripolar stimulation at threshold level and increases loudness by slowly widening current spread towards most comfortable level. Thirteen cochlear implant users were fitted with DCF and a non-steered MP matched on pulse rate, pulse width, and active electrodes. Nine part

Genetic Hearing Loss Affects Cochlear Processing.

The relationship between speech recognition and hereditary hearing loss is not straightforward. Underlying genetic defects might determine an impaired cochlear processing of sound. We obtained data from nine groups of patients with a specific type of genetic hearing loss. For each group, the affected cochlear site-of-lesion was determined based on previously published animal studies. Retrospectively obtained speech recognition scores in noise were related to several aspects of supra-threshold cochlear processing as assessed by psychophysical measurements. The differences in speech perception i

[Hereditary hearing loss].

Understanding the genetic basis of hearing loss is becoming increasingly relevant, as 50-70% of congenital hearing loss is hereditary and postlingual hearing loss is also often of hereditary origin. To date, more than 220 genes for hearing loss have been identified and more than 600 syndromes with hearing loss described. This review article explains the classification of genetic hearing loss into syndromic versus non-syndromic forms and the modes of inheritance involved. Some of the most common syndromes (Usher, Pendred, Jervell-Lange-Nielsen, Waardenburg, branchiootorenal, and Alport syndrome

Hearing Problems in Indonesia: Attention to Hypertensive Adults.

Known as a silent disability, hearing loss is one of the major health burdens worldwide. Evidence implies that those suffering from hypertension can experience hearing disturbances. Self-reporting of hearing problems and self-reporting of hypertension may be useful in providing an alarm for detecting hearing problems. However, in the Indonesian population, this matter has not been properly reported. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of hearing problems and their relationships with other demographic factors. In total, 28,297 respondents of productive age from the Indonesian Fa

Encephalomyelitis with hearing loss: case report on neurobrucellosis.

Neurobrucellosis is a zoonotic infection transmitted by infected animals or by contact with animal products and is an important health problem in resource-limited settings. In this case report, we present the case of a middle-aged man presenting with encephalomyelitis with hearing loss and diagnosed with neurobrucellosis based on imaging and serological tests. Because brucellosis infection is indolent, a high index of suspicion should be maintained in individuals presenting with fever, neurological signs and symptoms so that early management can prevent long-term neurological sequelae such as
