Is golden jackal (Canis aureus) the most important indicator species of Trichinella infection in Croatia?

Epidemiologic monitoring of wild animals is always an important step in defining potential zoonoses that can threaten humans. Particular emphasis should be given to those zoonotic agents permanently cycling within wild animal populations and represent a permanent reservoir for other wild or domesticated animals that can be direct sources of disease for humans. In Croatia, there are two European jackal populations: the Dalmatian population (DP) that has been inhabiting the islands and coastal area along the Adriatic Sea since medieval times, and the South East European population (SEEP) that is

Application of anti-D immunoglobulin in D-negative pregnant women in China.

This article summarizes the current situation of anti-D immunoglobulin (anti-D-Ig) use in RhD-negative pregnant women at home and abroad. The article describes the concept, research and development history, and domestic and foreign applications of anti-D-Ig and points out that anti-D-Ig has not been widely used in China, mainly due to reasons such as unavailability in the domestic market and non-standard current application strategies. The article focuses on analyzing the genetic and immunological characteristics of RhD-negative populations in China. The main manifestations were that the total

Yeast estrogen screen assay applied in the assessment of estrogenic activity removal from dairy cattle wastewater treated by anaerobic digestion.

The presence of estrogen-like endocrine disrupting chemicals (EEDC) in surface waters, soils, and groundwater has been frequently reported in the literature. Since these compounds can be excreted by humans and animals, the release of domestic sewage and animal wastewaters may be an important source of EEDC in the environment. In this context, there is a growing concern regarding the presence of these substances in the environment and their potential adverse effects on human health. However, most studies have been focused on the presence of EEDC in domestic wastewaters and the available informa

Socio-demographic determinants of intimate partner violence in Angola: a cross-sectional study of nationally representative survey data.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a global problem of public health importance, which can be found across all social layers and cultural backgrounds worldwide. Angola is still an under-explored country in the context of domestic violence and was therefore chosen as our focus of interest. Our study's goal was to identify the socio-demographic determinants of IPV in Angola. We used nationally representative data from female respondents of the 2015 Angolan Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). Simple bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between

Exploring the diversity of tick-borne pathogens: The case of bacteria (Anaplasma, Rickettsia, Coxiella and Borrelia) protozoa (Babesia and Theileria) and viruses (Orthonairovirus, tick-borne encephalitis virus and louping ill virus) in the European continent.

Ticks are the main vectors for the transmission of bacterial, protist and viral pathogens in Europe affecting wildlife and domestic animals. However, some of them are zoonotic and can cause serious, sometimes fatal, problems in human health. A systematic review in PubMed/MEDLINE database was conducted to determine the spatial distribution and host and tick species ranges of a selection of tick-borne bacteria (Anaplasma spp., Borrelia spp., Coxiella spp., and Rickettsia spp.), protists (Babesia spp. and Theileria spp.), and viruses (Orthonairovirus, and flaviviruses tick-borne encephalitis viru

Fecal microbiota of the synanthropic golden jackal (Canis aureus).

The golden jackal (Canis aureus), is a medium canid carnivore widespread throughout the Mediterranean region and expanding into Europe. This species thrives near human settlements and is implicated in zoonoses such as rabies. This study explores for the first time, the golden jackal fecal microbiota. We analyzed 111 fecal samples of wild golden jackals using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing the connection of the microbiome to animal characteristics, burden of pathogens and geographic and climate characteristics. We further compared the fecal microbiota of the golden jackal to the black-backed jack

Molecular detection and dense granule antigen 6 genotyping of feline Toxoplasma gondii in Phayao, Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Globally, toxoplasmosis is an important zoonotic parasite infection of many warm-blooded animals (including humans). Toxoplasma gondii oocysts are widespread, and their contamination can be primarily attributed to the members of the Felidae family. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and determine the dense granule antigen 6 (GRA6) genotype of T. gondii among domestic cats in the Phayao Province, Thailand. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 124 fecal samples were collected from owned cats in the Muang district, Phayao, Thailand, from January to December 2020. Fecal

Interactive effects of biological, human and environmental factors on tick loads in Boran cattle in tropical drylands.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are a serious threat to humans, wildlife and livestock, and cause severe economic losses in many tropical drylands. The effective control of TBDs has been constrained by limited understanding of what determines tick loads in animals. We tested interactive effects of several biological factors (sex, age and body condition), one environmental factor (rainfall) and one human factor (management type) on tick loads in animals. METHODS: We collected ticks on animals at four sampling sites in the semi-arid savanna area of Laikipia County, Kenya, of which two ar

Global prevalence of Mesocestoides infections in animals - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Mesocestoides spp. are zoonotic cestodes found as adults in carnivorous domestic and wild definitive hosts and as metacestodes in several taxa of intermediate hosts. Although several regional studies record its occurrence in different host populations, the global prevalence and patterns of occurrence of Mesocestoides spp. are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature to estimate the global prevalence of Mesocestoides spp. in major definitive and intermediate host taxa. Records published in English were collect

Sarcoptic mange in the wild boar, Sus scrofa, in Sweden.

Sarcoptic mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei has been present in the Swedish red fox (Vulpes vulpes) population since the 1970s. The disease has been described in other Swedish wildlife species, but not in the wild boar, Sus scrofa, until 2009. Single cases of sarcoptic mange have been diagnosed the last years in the expanding population of wild boar. This study aims to describe the histopathological lesions found on mangy wild boar and compare, by molecular methods, mites from wild boar cases with mites from mangy red foxes, raccoon dogs, and domestic pigs. Mangy wild boar with focal alopecia

US Food and Drug Administration regulatory pesticide residue monitoring of human foods: 2009-2017.

Pesticides such as insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides can protect crops from insects, fungi, weeds, and other pests but must be applied following label instructions so that the pesticide residues in human and animal foods do not exceed maximum residue limits (MRLs, known in the US as pesticide tolerances). The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collects and tests foods for pesticide residues to enforce compliance with tolerances and publishes annual reports on pesticide testing results. In this study, results for over 56,000 human food samples collected and analysed under the FDA pest

The Impact of Selection for Facial Reduction in Dogs: Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Canine Cranial Shape.

Through artificial selection, humans have altered the morphology of domestic dogs and created the range of morphological traits present in the diverse dog breeds seen today. This article tests how artificial breeding for extreme facial reduction affects the craniodental complex in domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). These brachycephalic dog breeds allow for a natural experiment on facial reduction, providing additional insight into this well-studied phenomenon associated with the evolutionary history of other animals including primates. We used an existing set of clinically obtained CT sca

Spousal Violence Against Women in India: A Social-Ecological Analysis Using Data From the National Family Health Survey 2015 to 2016.

Even after enactment of the Protection of Women From Domestic Violence Act 2005, over the last 10 years, the rate of decline of prevalence of spousal violence against women has remained low in India. This study attempts to explain the experience of spousal violence using a social-ecological framework. We analyzed the National Family Health Survey 2015 to 2016 (NFHS-4) data of 66,013 ever-married women aged 15 to 49 years. Participants in the domestic violence module of the NFHS-4 reported their experience of violence committed by their husband within the 12 months preceding the survey. Multile

An assessment of shedding with the oral rabies virus vaccine strain SPBN GASGAS in target and non-target species.

A safety requirement for live vaccines is investigating possible shedding in recipients since the presence of replication competent vaccine in secretions could result in direct and indirect horizontal transmission. This is especially relevant for oral rabies vaccine baits that are deliberately distributed into the environment. In the current study, survival of an oral rabies virus vaccine, SPBN GASGAS, was examined in excretions from different target and non-target species; red fox, raccoon dog, small Indian mongoose, raccoon, striped skunk, domestic dog, domestic cat and domestic pig. Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are natural definitive host of Besnoitia darlingi.

Bovine besnoitiosis, caused by Besnoitia besnoiti, is an economically important disease of cattle in many countries but its transmission remains a mystery. Wild felids are suspected to be its definitive hosts. The domestic cat (Felis catus) is known experimental definitive host for Besnoitia species of rodents. Here, we report for Besnoitia darlingi the first identification of a natural definitive host, the bobcat (Lynx rufus). Oocysts resembling Toxoplasma gondii (unsporulated; 10.9±0.8×12.1±0.2μm; n=5) were detected microscopically in the feces of two of 25 free ranging wild bobcats from Mis

DESCRIPTION OF GASTRIC ULCERS AND OF THEIR SUSPECTED, ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS IN DECEASED WILD EQUIDS AT THE RÉSERVE AFRICAINE DE SIGEAN, FRANCE (2010-2016).

Gastric ulcers are common in domestic horses and foals, affecting at least 90% of unmedicated racehorses in active training. Despite these high prevalences in domestic horses, literature about this condition in wild equids is almost nonexistent. The presence of gastric ulcers was evaluated at necropsy in six species of wild equids that died at the Réserve Africane de Sigean, a safari park in the south of France from 2010 to 2016. Among the 55 individuals that died during that period, a description of the gastric mucosa was available in 82% (45/55) of cases. Considering the cases for which a de

Redescription and first molecular characterization of the little known feline neurotropic nematode Gurltia paralysans (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea).

Gurltia paralysans is a poorly documented metastrongyloid nematode of cats, which mainly parasitizes the veins in the spinal cord subarachnoid space and parenchyma. Parasitic paraparesis caused by G. paralysans is a lesser-known spinal cord disease affecting domestic and wild felids of South America. Regions where feline gurltiosis is endemic include the southern parts of Chile and Argentina. Intra vitam diagnosis of feline gurltiosis remains challenging and is based primarily on neurological signs and the exclusion of other ethiologies for feline myelopathies.
