Sacral neuromodulation is an effective therapy to control overactive bladder symptoms, yet the underlying mechanisms and optimal stimulation parameters remain unclear. Analysis of 45 clinical studies from 1994 to 2023 demonstrated no significant change in rates of long-term symptom control despite technological advancements, and analysis of recent studies (2015 onward) showed that more than 40% of patients receiving test stimulation do not benefit from sacral neuromodulation. Critical knowledge gaps persist. A lack of evidence guiding stimulation parameter selection has resulted in largely unc

Transorbital electrical stimulation (TES) has emerged as a promising approach for eliciting visual percepts, or phosphenes, in both sighted and visually impaired individuals. However, the utility of these approaches is limited owing to cumbersome setups consisting of wired gel electrodes and the difficulty in optimizing stimulation paradigms. Overall, optimizing transorbital stimulation paradigms, remains a huge challenge, particularly regarding electrode type and waveform characteristics. In this study, we investigated whether the type of electrode (i.e. wet versus dry) affects the psychometr

BACKGROUND: Modulation of the suprascapular nerve (SSN) and axillary nerves using peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS)is increasingly being used to treat patients with chronic shoulder pain.
CASE REPORT: Our patient presented with chronic shoulder pain secondary to glenohumeral joint osteoarthritis. Ultrasound guidance was used for PNS lead placement at the spinoglenoid notch and at the deltoid for suprascapular and axillary nerve modulation, respectively. After a 60-day treatment period with PNS, the patient had clinically significant pain reduction. No complications were observed.

Objective. To investigate the feasibility of delivering multidimensional feedback using a single channel of peripheral nerve stimulation by complementing intensity percepts with flutter frequency percepts controlled by burst period modulation.Approach.Two dimensions of a distally referred sensation were provided simultaneously: intensity was conveyed by the modulation of the pulse charge rate inside short discrete periods of stimulation referred to as bursts and frequency was conveyed by the modulation of the period between bursts. For this approach to be feasible, intensity percepts must be pe

Hypoglossal nerve stimulation is a key step in insertion of a hypoglossal nerve stimulator for sleep apnea. The hypoglossal nerve stimulator works through assessment of apneic events that result in stimulation of the protrusion fibers of the hypoglossal nerve causing protrusion of the tongue and opening of the oropharynx resulting in ability for the patient to adequately breath. Therefore, during insertion of the hypoglossal nerve stimulator, a key portion of the procedure is inclusion of the protrusive fibers of the hypoglossal nerve and exclusion of the retrusive fibers. In the past, this wa

Optoelectronic synaptic devices outperform electrical synapses in speed, energy efficiency, and integration density. Recent progress in visual sensing and optogenetics has led to the integration of light-sensitive materials in these devices, promising unmatched speed, connectivity, and bandwidth. Here, we present a copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) based optoelectronic synaptic device boasting femto Joule power consumption stable at room temperature. The optoelectronic synapse can be operated with energy consumption as low as 430.4 fJ which is very attractive from the point of view of low-power neu

The clinical assessment of patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) relies on the observation of behavioural responses to standardised sensory stimulation. However, several medical comorbidities may directly impair the production of reproducible and appropriate responses, thus reducing the sensitivity of behaviour-based diagnoses. One such comorbidity is akinetic mutism (AM), a rare neurological syndrome characterised by the inability to initiate volitional motor responses, sometimes associated with clinical presentations that overlap with those of DoC. In this paper, we describe the cas

BACKGROUND: The treatment of neurogenic bladder (NB) is a challenge because conventional therapy often fails. Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a minimally invasive technique and an unconventional treatment for neurogenic bladder. Its research is still in the exploratory stage. The research on its effectiveness and safety is not clear.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness and safety of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) for neurogenic bladder (NB).
METHODS: By searching the PubMed databases and Cochrane Library databases, combined with the method of literature tracing, the clinical researches and

Neuromodulation serves as a cornerstone for brain sciences and clinical applications. Recent reports suggest that mid-infrared stimulation (MIRS) causes non-thermal modulation of brain functions. Current understanding of its mechanism hampers the routine application of MIRS. Here, we examine how MIRS influences the sensorimotor transformation in awaking-behaving pigeons, from neuronal signals to behavior. We applied MIRS and electrical stimulation (ES) to the pretectal nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (nLM), an essential retinorecipient structure in the pretectum, and examined their influences

Substantial studies of human amygdala function have revealed its importance in processing emotional experience, autonomic regulation, and sensory information; however, the neural substrates and circuitry subserving functions have not been directly mapped at the level of the subnuclei in humans. We provide a useful overview of amygdala functional characterization by using direct electrical stimulation to various amygdala regions in 48 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy undergoing stereoelectroencephalography recordings. This stimulation extends beyond the anticipated emotional, neurovegetati

We hypothesized that activation of phrenic afferents induces diaphragm motor plasticity. In anesthetized and spontaneously breathing rats we delivered 40 Hz, low threshold (twitch and 1.5X twitch threshold), inspiratory-triggered stimulation to the left hemidiaphragm for 30 min to activate ipsilateral phrenic afferents. Diaphragm amplitude ipsilateral and contralateral to stimulation were increased for 60 min following both currents compared to time controls not receiving stimulation. Diaphragm stimulation was repeated in laminectomy controls or following a unilateral C3-C6 dorsal rhizotomy to

Tumor treating fields (TTFields), a new modality of cancer treatment, are electric fields transmitted transdermally to tumors. The FDA has approved TTFields for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme and mesothelioma, and they are currently under study in many other cancer types. While antimitotic effects were the first recognized biological anticancer activity of TTFields, data have shown that tumor treating fields achieve their anticancer effects through multiple mechanisms of action. TTFields therefore have the ability to be useful for many cancer types in combination with many different

Gastroparesis is the most common gastric motility disorder. The cardinal symptoms are nausea, vomiting, gastric fullness, early satiety, or bloating, associated with slow gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Delayed gastric emptying is demonstrated by a gastric emptying scintigraphy or by a breath test. Gastroparesis can be idiopathic, post-operative, secondary to diabetes, iatrogenic, or post-infectious. Therapeutic care must be multidisciplinary including nutritional, medical, endoscopic and surgical modes. The complications of delayed gastric emptying must be sought an

Migraine is a common and invalidating disorder worldwide. Patients of all ages experience the disorder as very impairing regarding their personal and occupational lives. The current approach in migraine therapy is multimodal including lifestyle management, psychoeducation and, if available, psychotherapeutic interventions, and pharmacotherapy. The lack of non-pharmacological and non-invasive treatment options call for new and innovative therapeutic approaches. Peripheral neurostimulation is a relatively new method in migraine management offering a painless and non-pharmacological way of target

Objective. Maximizing the stability of implanted neural interfaces will be critical to developing effective treatments for neurological and neuromuscular disorders. Our research aims to develop a stable neural interface using wireless communication and intrafascicular microelectrodes to provide highly selective stimulation of neural tissue.Approach. We implanted a wireless floating microelectrode array into the left sciatic nerve of six rats. Over a 38 week implantation period, we recorded stimulation thresholds and movements evoked at each implanted electrode. We also tracked each animal's re

Neuromuscular monitoring is essential for optimal management of neuromuscular blocking drugs. Postoperative residual neuromuscular blockade continues to occur with an unacceptably high incidence and is associated with adverse patient outcomes. Use of a peripheral nerve stimulator and subjective tactile or visual assessment is useful for intraoperative management of neuromuscular blockade, especially when the patient's hand is accessible. Quantitative monitoring is necessary for confirmation of adequate reversal and for identification of patients who have recovered spontaneously and therefore s
