BACKGROUND: Lung separation may be achieved through the use of double lumen tubes or endobronchial blockers. The use of lung separation techniques carries the risk of airway injuries which range from minor complications like postoperative hoarseness and sore throat to rare and potentially devastating tracheobronchial mucosal injuries like bronchus perforation or rupture. With few case reports to date, bronchial rupture with the use of endobronchial blockers is indeed an overlooked complication.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old male patient with a left upper lobe lung adenocarcinoma underwent

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) are the most common malignant tumour of the salivary glands. MECs have also been reported to occur in atypical sites. Primary MECs of the thyroid gland are extremely rare, accounting for 0.5% of thyroid malignancies with approximately 48 cases reported in the literature. In most cases, these are low-grade neoplasms with good long-term prognosis. We present the case of a 74-year-old patient with poorly differentiated MEC of the thyroid gland, which behaved aggressively resulting in rapid decline and death of the patient. The exact pathophysiology of the disease

A case of Acanthocephala infection in a 5-year-old female rehabilitated and released black-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla), which was part of a post-release monitoring program of a pangolin research operation in the Central African Republic, is described. This represents the first report of Acanthocephala infection in this species, which lead to intestinal perforation, secondary peritonitis and ultimately to the death of the animal concerned. It is of relevance to alert the pangolin conservation and research community to a so far unreported cause of death. A case history and necrops

A 57-year-old woman underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy due to a continuous drop in hemoglobin levels reaching 7.4 g/dl after treatment with intravenous thrombolytic therapy 1 week earlier because of an ischemic insult. Numerous erosive lesions were found in the gastric corpus. Histological staining of a specimen from the gastric lesions revealed a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical examination confirmed the diagnosis of gastric metastasis from lung cancer based on positive staining for thyroid transcriptional factor‑1 (TTF-1) and cytokeratin 7 (CK7) as well as via nega

We describe a case of a 32-year-old man who died due to bilateral re-expansion pulmonary edema (RPE) following the insertion a chest tube for unilateral spontaneous pneumothorax. Fifteen minutes after inserting the chest tube, the patient with right spontaneous pneumothorax was diagnosed with right re-expansion edema by chest radiograph. Although multiple treatments were administered, the patient died. However, the findings from autopsy showed bilateral RPE existed in the decedent but not unilateral RPE. Autopsy, microscopic examination, and clinical records concluded that the cause of death w

Tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) diagnosis is challenging due to the lack of a gold standard diagnostic tool. The diagnosis is significantly harder in regions where visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is also prevalent since immunological tests may present cross-reactivity. A cirrhotic patient from an endemic Brazilian region for TL and VL presented with atypical cutaneous lesions, a usual clinico-laboratory feature of VL (including a positive rk39 test result), but he was diagnosed with TL histopathologically; VL was ruled out by necropsy. Physicians working in co-prevalent areas should be aware of aty

BACKGROUND: With the following report we want to present an unusual case of a patient suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome with early discovery of bacterial pathogens in bronchoalveolar liquid samples that developed a fatal undiscovered disseminated fungal infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old man was admitted to our university hospital with dyspnea. Progressive respiratory failure developed leading to admission to the intensive care unit, intubation and prone positioning was necessary. To ensure adequate oxygenation and lung protective ventilation veno-venous extracorpore

BACKGROUND One of the most common causes of central nervous system (CNS) opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients is toxoplasmosis. It can cause focal or disseminated brain lesions leading to neurological deficit, coma, and death. Prompt management with optimal antibiotics is vital. However, the diagnosis of cerebral toxoplasmosis is challenging in infected individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The possible diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, imaging, and specific serologic investigations. The diagnosis can be confirmed by histopathological examination and

A 14-y-old spayed female Labrador Retriever was presented with an 8-mo history of chronic vomiting. Abdominal ultrasound and gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a mass protruding into the gastric lumen, with cytologic features suggestive of sarcoma. A partial gastrectomy was performed; the gastric body and antrum were thickened, with a cerebriform appearance of the mucosal surface. Histologic examination revealed a submucosal neoplastic proliferation of fusiform cells variably arranged in irregular bundles and scattered whorls. Fusiform cells strongly reacted to antibodies against vimentin, S1

Nadolol is a β-adrenergic antagonist that has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of infantile hemangioma. It has been suggested that this drug may have fewer side effects compared with the gold standard therapy, propranolol, because it does not exhibit membrane-stabilizing effects and has little ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. However, the pharmacokinetics and safety of nadolol in infants are not well understood, potentially making this therapy dangerous. β-adrenergic antagonist toxicity causes bradycardia, hypotension, hypoglycemia, and even death. We report a case of a 1

RATIONALE: Autoimmune hemolytic AQ5 anemia (AIHA) is an immune disorder caused by antibodies directed against unmodified autologous red blood cells. In rare cases, AIHA is comorbid with other immunological disorders; for instance, when AIHA is complicated with immunologic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) it is called Evans Syndrome (ES). These multiple autoimmune mechanisms are referred to as "immunological tolerance loss," which is known as a characteristic autoimmunity specific for AIHA. And there are no estimation of the risk for thromboembolism in the "immunological tolerance loss" case.

A 61-year-old man died suddenly after a brief history of shortness of breath and hemoptysis. At autopsy he had lobar pneumonia involving the right upper and left lower lobes of the lung. Significantly there was also a 30 × 20 mm (in cross-section) thyroglossal duct cyst compressing the upper airway. Death was attributed to respiratory failure due to the combined effects of lobar pneumonia (cultures positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae) and airway narrowing from a thyroglossal duct cyst. Although such cysts are usually found in childhood they may on occasion be diagnosed in adults. Despite bei

BACKGROUND Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCC) is a rare clinical and radiological syndrome that has been associated with various infectious etiologies. CLOCC are among the recently described neurological associations with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We report a case of CLOCC in a man with SARS-CoV-2 infection who presented with auditory hallucinations and rapidly developed systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). BACKGROUND Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by arterial, venous, and small-vessel thrombosis, pregnancy-related morbidity and the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies such as anticardiolipin antibody, and/or anti-beta2-glycoprotein I. In the recent years, APS was observed in patients with solid tumors and the renal cancer, lung carcinoma and breast tumors were the most common tumors linked with APS. CASE REPORT A 53-year-old female presented with pain and pitting edema of left lower extremity that had begun 6 months prior to hospitalization. Deep ve

The more common manifestations of cryptococcal infections are restricted to the central nervous system and lungs. A young man, suffering from idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy with a left ventricular ejection fraction of 20%, presented with subacute, painful tender swelling in both legs initially attributed to congestive cardiac failure. No response to diuretics was achieved. Metabolically active lesions in the muscles of both lower limbs suggestive of muscle abscesses were found. A diagnosis of tropical pyomyositis was therefore made, but aspiration surprisingly revealed gram-positive yeast c
