BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hamartoma is one of the most common benign tumors of the lung, the symptoms are often atypical, so its diagnosis is not so easy. We presented an elderly man with elevated D-dimer combined persistent acupuncture-like chest pain misdiagnosed as pulmonary embolism finally proved as lung hamartoma with secondary lung infection by bronchoscopy biopsy.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is usually caused by thrombosis or tumor. We report the long-term survival of a patient with PE due to a leiomyosarcoma in the deep vein. A 71-year-old woman complained of dyspnea and swelling of the left lower limb. Computed tomography revealed filling defects in the pulmonary arteries and deep vein. She was diagnosed with PE caused by venous thrombosis and treated with anticoagulant therapy. Her symptoms were prolonged, and D-dimer tests remained negative. The incidence and clinical manifestations of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) were examined in patients with a range of underlying disorders. Out of 1,882 patients suspected as having DIC, 204 cases were diagnosed as suffering from DIC and included in this study. Untreated growth hormone deficiency (GHD) might explain the increased mortality reported in patients with hypopituitarism.
