In spite of improving epidemiological knowledge in relation to child health, the challenge of promoting the survival and quality of life of infants and children in most parts of the developing world remains an abiding public health problem, for both the countries and the international agencies involved. Current infant and child health programmes largely reflect western style medical care, with emphasis placed on reducing mortality, and the preventive aspects confined mainly to immunisation, improved nutrition, provision of micronutrients, promotion of breast-feeding and birth spacing. Lack of demonstrated neurotoxicity among fish-eating populations has been cited by the World Health Organization and others as supporting an adult LOEL (lowest observed effect level) of > or = 200 ppb blood mercury equivalent. We reviewed 13 published evaluations of neurologic status as related to tissue mercury or methylmercury concentration in long-term fish-eating populations. Review criteria included study size, design (sampling strategy, characterization of exposure, characterization of outcome) and data analysis. No case of classic Minimata disease is described in the 13 studies. Also, n

Five outbreaks of trichinellosis, involving 86 people, took place in Andalucía (Southern Spain) between 1984 and 1987. Four of them were caused by eating infected pork and one by eating wild boar meat. The human sera were analysed by the immunofluorescence assay test, which showed circulating anti-Trichinella antibody titres of up to 1:10240. A micro-ELISA test, carried out with sera from two of the outbreaks, revealed the presence of circulating antigens 68 and 78 days after infection. Finally, 11 of 17 samples of products prepared with pork and wild boar meat showed Trichinella larvae after

Thirty human anthrax cases were reported from Ramabhadrapuram village of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh during November-December, 1989. These cases occurred following an epizootic of anthrax among cattle and sheep of the village and ingestion of contaminated meat by the villagers. The overall attack rate was 24.39 per cent with a case fatality of 16.67 per cent. All age groups and both sexes were affected. Ten cases were of cutaneous form with typical black eschar formation which were confirmed bacteriologically. Fever and headache were common systemic manifestations. They responded well

Various studies on trichinosis in Thailand since the first outbreak in 1962 up until 15 July 1983 are reviewed. There were 67 outbreaks, affecting 2,792 persons and resulting in 85 deaths. Most of the outbreaks occurred in the north of the country which is mountainous. Hilltribe pigs and wild boars were the common sources of human infection. Incidence of Trichinella spiralis larvae in dog meat in the area favoring of dog meat consumption is cautioned to create a public health problem in the future. Some Thai dishes are proved as viable T. spiralis larvae source due to cooking procedures. Contr

Three experiments were done to determine the effects of giving White Leghorn chickens, broiler chickens, and turkey poults diets that contained white winter or spring wheat contaminated with 4-deoxynivalenol (DON). Diets that contained .35 and .7 mg DON/kg from winter wheat did not (P greater than .05) influence feed intake, body weight gain, feed/gain ratio, and organ weight/body weight ratios of Leghorn and broiler chickens, and poults when fed between 7 and 21 days in Experiment 1. Dietary DON levels up to 4.6 mg/kg increased the feed intakes (P less than .01) and daily body weight gains (P

The lancet fluke is a common parasite in Swiss sheep and cattle. From 1976 to 1980, 77 patients were found to have eggs of D. dendriticum in the stool. No genuine human infection could be diagnosed, and in all patients the coprologic finding of D. dendriticum eggs had to be considered the result of spurious infections due to the consumption of infected livers. The annual incidence of stool specimens positive for D. dendriticum eggs was between 0.20 and 0.38%.

Health examinations by a revised method aimed at detecting renal tubular dysfunctions more effectively were conducted on the general population aged 50 years and over in cadmium-polluted areas (1826 persons) and control areas (1611 persons) in four prefectures in Japan in 1976. Although detailed analysis of the data is not yet completed, some of the results obtained are described here. The prevalence of glucosuria and low molecular weight proteinuria, frequency of decreased % TRP, and cadmium concentrations in urine are higher in the cadmium-polluted areas than in the controls. Clinically diag

BACKGROUND: Parents commonly ask about food allergy tests, to find a cause for their child's eczema, yet the value of routine testing is uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a clinical trial comparing test-guided dietary advice versus usual care, for the management of eczema, is feasible.
METHODS: Children (>3 months and <5 years) with mild-to-severe eczema, recruited via primary care, were individually randomized (1:1) to intervention or usual care. Intervention participants underwent structured allergy history and skin prick tests (SPT) with dietary advice for cow's milk, hen's egg,

The present study was conducted to estimate the exposure and characterize the risk for the child population of Serbia to Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) from milk and milk-based food. A total of 3404 samples comprising milk and different milk-based food samples were collected from various regions of Serbia from 2017 to 2019. Evaluation of AFM1 exposure was carried out using the deterministic method, whereas risk characterization was evaluated using the margin of exposure (MOE) and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Detection rates for AFM1 in milk and milk-based food samples ranged between 2% and

BACKGROUND: Food-borne infections cause huge economic and human life losses. Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis are among the top ranking pathogens causing such losses. Control of such infections is hampered by persistent contamination of foods and food-processing environments, resistance of pathogens to sanitizing agents, existence of heterogeneous populations of pathogens (including culturable and viable but non-culturable cells) within the same food items, and inability to detect all such pathogens by culture-based methods. Modern methods such as flow cytomet

BACKGROUND: Street food is expanding all around Ethiopia. Street vendors have become commonplace near schools, hospitals and bus stations. Because street vended food is sold in unsanitary surroundings near streets, it can be contaminated with variety of pathogens, exposing consumers to foodborne illnesses. There haven't been enough studies on Ethiopian street food, and little is known about how hygienic these foods are. The local authorities don't even have a regulatory system to ensure food safety for street food vendors. Thus, this study aimed to assess food hygiene practices among street fo

A study of the natral history and risk factors for hepatitis A can shed light on the potential for contamination of plasma concentrate with hepatitis A virus (HAV). According to the long-term Sentinel Counties Study conducted by Alter and colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the most frequently reported risk factors for HAV infection are living with a patient who has hepatitis, homosexual activity, and close contact with young children. International travel to hepatitis A endemic areas and illicit parenteral drug use were less frequently documented risk fact

Benzalkonium chloride (BC) is a commonly used disinfectant in the food industry. However, inappropriate use of BC leads to BC adaptation in … infectant BC to avoid the emergence of BC-adapted strains of L. monocytogenes, reducing the risk of food contamination by BC adapted strains.
