OBJECTIVE: To present the case of a 54-year-old man with loss of speech, but with preservation of voluntary facio-lingual motility, language and other cognitive abilities (Broca's aphemia).
METHOD: Observation of patient oral communicative abilities and general behavior, neuropsychological assessment and cranial computed tomography.
RESULTS: Computed tomography showed a hyperdense lesion in the subcortex of the left precentral gyrus corresponding to Brodmann's area 6 and 44. Neuropsychological assessment confirmed that the major cognitive domains were intact.

Neurenteric cysts are rare developmental cysts lined by endodermal derived epithelium. We present the case of a 68-year-old patient presenting with seizures who was found to have an extra-axial low density lesion with associated wall calcification on CT. Aspiration and biopsy of the cyst revealed a neurenteric cyst. Such lesions of the lateral supratentorial convexity are extremely rare and calcification has not been previously reported in these intracranial cysts.

Autopsy detected no tumor tissues in a patient who died 6.5 years after the diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme. A 54-year-old male developed left hemiparesis one month prior to admission. Computed tomography demonstrated a cystic lesion in the right frontal region with irregular ring-like enhancement. The tumor was extensively removed together with the surrounding tissue followed by irradiation (whole brain 32.4 Gy, local 28.8 Gy), and intravenous administration of interferon-beta. We report a 70-year-old man with progressive gait disturbance and gaze palsy. This prospective study focused on the accuracy of diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We recruited 100 dementia patients and 20 controls who underwent a systematic evaluation. The clinical diagnosis of probable AD or possible AD according to the NINCDS-ADRDA criteria was assigned in 69% of the patients, 21% had vascular dementia (VaD) (DSM-III-R) and 8% had mixed AD-VaD; only 2 patients (2%) had the Lewy body variant of AD (AD-LB). Mental flexibility (skill with shifting response set) and visual planning skills were examined with a group of 60 children and adolescents with learning disabilities. Using the technique of perfusion microdialysis combined with a small-bore liquid chromatography system we have measured the basal and drug-induced fluxes of extracellular dopamine in the medial prefrontal cortex of chloral hydrate-anesthetized rats and have compared our findings in the cortex to that observed in the striatum. Evidence indicating cell membrane fusion among cells and their processes where subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus is present is shown in an ultrastructural study of a brain biopsy. Virus budding from plasma membrane was not seen. These rare findings reinforce the hypothesis of cell-to-cell transmission as the most likely mechanism of SSPE virus infection. The presence of fused membranes between cell processes and cell soma probably explains the rapid spread of this virus throughout the nervous system.

A patient was observed with limited adhesive arachnitis of nontuberculous origin producing Foster-Kennedy syndrome. Ophthalmological, neurological and arteriographic investigations suggested unequivocally presence of a brain tumour. Limited non-tuberculous leptomeningitis is a very rare disease, difficult to diagnose and particularly difficult to differentiate against brain tumour. In the described case only intraoperative findings made possible the diagnosis.
