According to the cases reported in the GDR as well as in the FRG, 1-2 persons contract a gas gangrene infection per week. The lethality is alarmingly high. In the GDR more than two thirds of the patients die. Among the numerous factors influencing the prognosis time is a very important one. A state of the art definition of arboviruses is given which does recognise the importance of vertical transmission in arthropods to the basic maintenance of some arboviruses. Statistical analysis reveals that from 4 persons one possess supernumerary tendon on the right hand, one on the left hand, one on both hands and one has no one. If a supernumerary tendon is found, the probability of appearance of further accessory tendons is enhanced. The 3 fingers of the ulnar side of the hand appear as an uniform group, while the indicis seems to play a special role. A new variation of muscle which runs through the canalis carpi is described.

Neuromuscular paralysis caused by salivary proteins of ticks is a well-known complication after tick bites in Australia, North America, and South Africa. Symptoms may include general weakness, difficulty walking, ascending paralysis, and bulbar paralysis with diplopia, culminating in respiratory failure. In Europe, toxin-mediated paralysis has rarely been noted. We report a case of cranial nerve paralysis with delayed onset after a tick bite in northern Germany.

For more circular haemorrhoidal piles, circular stapled haemorrhoidectomy has been used in Germany since 1998. In cases of additional prolapsing anoderm reconstructive anoplasty might be superior. Using a classification orientated therapeutical regime for haemorrhoidal disease offers high healing rates with a low rate of complications and recurrences.

Acute necrotising encephalopathy of childhood (ANE) is an uncommon disease which predominantly affects infants and young children living in Japan and Taiwan. A multifocal encephalopathy with symmetrical lesions in the thalamus, tegmentum of the brain stem, cerebral periventricular white matter and cerebellar medulla is characteristic. We present the imaging features in a 4-year-old Japanese boy who had been living in Germany for 2 1/2 years before presentation.

The International Network on Esophageal Atresia (INoEA) stands as a beacon of collaboration in addressing the complexities of this congenital condition on a global scale. The eleven board members, from various countries (USA, Canada, France, Australia, Italy, Sweden, Germany, and The Netherlands) and backgrounds (pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric surgery, pediatric pulmonology, nursing, and parents) met in a face-to-face symposium in Lille in November 2023, to identify challenges and solutions for improving global collaboration of the network.

The number of patients suffering from a sexually transmitted disease (STD) in Germany is rising steadily. Mostly MSM (men who have sex with men) are affected. We report the case of an HIV-positive patient with syphilis, in whom the implantation of permanent fillers into the buttocks and thighs, for cosmetic purposes, prevented standard therapy of syphilis by intramuscular penicillin administration. According to current guidelines intravenous ceftriaxone (2 g once daily) was administered instead.
