Personal resilience factors protect against distressing auditory hallucinations: A study comparing psychotic patients with auditory hallucinations, non-patients with auditory hallucinations, and healthy controls.

Although studies have identified several risk factors for the development of psychotic disorders, potential protective factors - such as resilience - have rarely been examined. Studies suggest that the negative beliefs people hold about their Auditory Hallucinations (AH) may be an indicator of a need for care. However, the reason why certain people do not develop negative beliefs is unclear but may be related to resilience. The present study aimed to examine the role of resilience in AH by comparing psychotic patients with AH, non-patients with AH, and healthy controls without AH. Another aim

The effect of childhood sexual assault history on outpatient cognitive processing therapy for military sexual trauma-related posttraumatic stress disorder: A preliminary investigation.

History of childhood sexual assault (CSA) may result in poorer emotion regulation and interpersonal functioning, potentially affecting the tolerability and effectiveness of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Survivors of military sexual trauma (MST) have an increased incidence of CSA; however, research examining the role of CSA in EBTs for veterans with MST-related PTSD is limited. Data from 32 (9 male; 23 female) veterans with MST-related PTSD were used from a previously conducted randomized clinical trial examining the efficacy of an outpatient PTSD EB

Symptoms of psychological distress among African Americans seeking HIV-related mental health care.

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of symptoms of psychological distress experienced by African Americans upon self-enrollment in HIV-related mental health care and to compare the symptoms in this sample to the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) normative sample, the instrument used in this study to assess symptoms of psychological distress. Data were collected from 575 African Americans living with HIV who self-enrolled at an HIV-related mental health clinic located in a large city in the southeastern United States. Nearly 20% of the sample reported a t score >/= 63 for both s

Affectivity in the problem-solving interactions of schizophrenia patients and their family members.

This study sought to examine the relationship between symptomatology and the affect expressed between individuals with schizophrenia and their family members. It was hypothesized that, because of their impact on patient social behavior and potential burden on relatives, greater negative symptoms would be associated with less emotional expression in patients but would be related to the greater expression of negative emotions in their relatives within a problem-solving discussion. Informed by research on the structure of emotion, a broad assessment of affect, including Negativity, Positivity, an

Social support needs of bereaved parents and family members after perinatal loss: A qualitative study.

Perinatal loss is a profoundly distressing experience for many families. While family and friends are often primary sources of informal support for bereaved parents, they may find it challenging to provide the support parents need. This study explores the social support experiences of parents and family members navigating perinatal bereavement in Australia with their informal social networks, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 20 parents and 5 family members. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three themes, along with seven sub-themes reflecting how informal support was enacted, ne

Leveraging Personality Assessment to Better Understand Traumatic Stress and Discrimination in Daily Life.

This research explores personality assessment using experience sampling methodology (ESM) as a framework for better understanding temporal dynamics associated with different conceptualizations of traumatic stress (i.e., post-traumatic stress symptoms, race/gender/age discrimination). College student participants (N = 278) completed a 14-day diary study, which included daily measures of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) and daily items capturing self-concept, interpersonal bothers, emotions, and defenses. Results indicated that traumatic stress-related scales were associated

The "Caring Giver": Emotional Caregiving in the Setting of Essential Tremor.

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder associated with functional impairment. Emerging evidence shows that some ET caregivers experience burden, but the unique interpersonal aspects of caregiving in the context of ET have not been fully examined. RESEARCH DESIGN: Open-ended questions were administered to 98 ET care-recipient-caregiver dyads. Responses were analyzed using conventional content analysis. RESULTS: The unique visibility of disability and feelings of embarrassment that occur with ET prompts caregivers to be highly attuned to care-recipient emotions.

Overcoming the Social Stigma on Mood Disorders with Dancing.

In our society, the social stigma against people who suffer from mood disorders is a very powerful factor that negatively affects the healing of patient. He is often isolated from the others for the fear of being judged "fool, crazy or dangerous" or discriminated and emarginated for his mental health problem. For this reason, a cornerstone of mood disorder rehabilitation is the bringing out of the patient from his isolation, the reintegration of the user in the social context with the increase and the improvement in the quality of interpersonal relationships in the family and in the external c…

Childhood Reports of Food Neglect and Impulse Control Problems and Violence in Adulthood.

Food insecurity and hunger during childhood are associated with an array of developmental problems in multiple domains, including impulse control problems and violence. Unfortunately, extant research is based primarily on small convenience samples and an epidemiological assessment of the hunger-violence link is lacking. The current study employed data from Wave 1 (2001-2002) and Wave 2 (2004-2005) of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). The NESARC is a nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized U.S. residents aged 18 years and older. Part

A Network Approach to Environmental Impact in Psychotic Disorder: Brief Theoretical Framework.

The spectrum of psychotic disorder represents a multifactorial and heterogeneous condition and is thought to result from a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. In the current paper, we analyze this interplay using network analysis, which has been recently proposed as a novel psychometric framework for the study of mental disorders. Using general population data, we construct network models for the relation between 3 environmental risk factors (cannabis use, developmental trauma, and urban environment), dimensional measures of psychopathology (anxiety, depression, interp

[Techniques for neurovascular bundle preservation during retropubic radical prostatectomy].

Although radical prostatectomy is a curative therapy that has proven effective in many of our patients with prostate cancer, it is still associated with significant morbidity, which includes postoperative erectile dysfunction among its leading exponents. Potency after the intervention may be influenced by many factors, among which, presence of adequate erectile function before surgery, patient's age, stage of disease at the time of treatment, surgeon's experience and, of course, interpersonal anatomical variations may be pointed out. In recent decades, the exact knowledge of the neuroanatomy o

Psychopathy and suicidality in female offenders: mediating influences of personality and abuse.

The influence of personality and childhood abuse on suicidal behaviors and psychopathy was examined among female prisoners. Scores on the affective/interpersonal component (Factor 1; F1) and the antisocial deviance (Factor 2; F2) component of psychopathy were obtained from the Psychopathy Checklist--Revised (R. D. Hare, 1991). Suicide attempt and childhood physical and sexual abuse history were coded from interviews and prison files, and personality was assessed using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (A. Tellegen, in press). Suicide attempts were positively associated with F2 and
