A nature-immersive virtual reality intervention to support hospice family caregivers: Qualitative findings from a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Family caregivers (FCGs) of cancer patients who are in hospice experience psychological challenges and poor quality of life (QOL) as a consequence of caregiving demands and anticipatory loss. Supportive interventions are needed. Exposure to nature offers a source of relaxation; however, FCGs are often homebound and have limited opportunities for respite. Technology-mediated nature experiences delivered via virtual reality (VR) may be an alternative. The purpose was to explore the perspectives of hospice FCGs who completed a nature-immersive VR intervention for the enhancement of the

How and Why Patients Adhere to a Prescribed Cardiac Rehabilitation Program: A Longitudinal Phenomenological Study of Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Background. Adherence to cardiac rehabilitation remains a challenge despite established evidence that engaging in regular exercise is a strong preventive measure to experiencing a second cardiac event. A recent study found a six-month cardiac rehabilitation program to be effective for facilitating regular exercise behavior among patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome. The purpose of this study was to conduct a phenomenological investigation using Colaizzi's descriptive technique to understand mechanisms responsible for behavior change. Methods. Data were collected and analyzed among p

Exploring the lived experience of renal cachexia for individuals with end-stage renal disease and the interrelated experience of their carers: Study protocol.

Renal cachexia is an important consideration in the person-centred care that is needed in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, given that clinical guidelines relating to renal cachexia are largely absent, this is an unmet care need. To inform guidelines and future renal service planning, there is an urgency to understand individuals' experiences of renal cachexia and the interrelated experiences of the carers in their lives. We report here the protocol for an interpretative phenomenological study which will explore this lived experience. A purposive sampling strategy will recruit individua

Grieving a disrupted biography: an interpretative phenomenological analysis exploring barriers to the use of mindfulness after neurological injury or impairment.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness has demonstrated strong utility for enhancing self-management and health outcomes in chronic illness. However, sensation-focused mindfulness techniques may not be appropriate for clinical populations with neurological injury. This study aimed to identify how expert mindfulness teachers with sensory loss/impairment naturalistically adapt and experience mindfulness. We aimed to highlight the rationale for and barriers to mindfulness practice when living with sensory loss. METHODS: A qualitative, semi-structured interview design was used, analysed via Interpretative Pheno

Impact of Psychic Traumatization on the Development of Musicians' Dystonia: Six Exploratory Case Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Musician's dystonia represents a special case of focal dystonia. It is described as a task-specific movement disorder which presents itself as muscular incoordination or loss of voluntary fine-motor control of extensively trained movements while a musician is playing the instrument. Several triggering factors have been identified, such as overuse, chronic pain, perfectionism, and anxiety disorders. As a common feature, dysfunctional self-management and stress-coping mechanisms are at the root of the aforementioned behaviors. Based on long-term experience from our musicians' medicine

Massed cognitive processing therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder in women survivors of intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) report significant trauma histories, high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), head injuries and comorbid disorders, and multiple barriers to treatment that often preclude the regular attendance and engagement required in typical therapy protocols. The significant challenges faced by IPV survivors needing treatment may be ameliorated by condensing effective treatments for PTSD, such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT), in an accelerated delivery timeline. METHOD: Using a multiple subject, single case design of six matched pai
