Examination and Relationship of Posterior Superior Alveolar Artery and Canalis Sinuosus Using Cone Beam CT.

In this study, we investigated the anatomical location, dimensions, and relationships of the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) and canalis sinuosus (CS) within the maxilla, aiming to enhance the safety and efficacy of surgical procedures. A retrospective analysis was performed on 323 individual cone beam computed tomography scans. The diameter of the PSAA and CS, the distance of the PSAA from the sinus floor, the distance of the PSAA and CS from the alveolar crest, the distance of the PSAA and CS from the nasal septum, and the distance from CS to the nasal cavity floor were measured. T…

Management and treatment of four cases of oral carcinoma cuniculatum.

OBJECTIVES: Oral carcinoma cuniculatum (OCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It has similar clinicopathological characte … lveolar ridge mucosa and one on the tongue. Imaging revealed that two of the lesions located in the maxilla had osseous lysis. All four patients were all treated with radical excision, and the histopathology showed findings of SCC cuniculatum. It was decided that no further treatment was necessary. None of the patients has experienced recurrence during fo …

The Management of Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma: A Case Presentation.

One of the most frequent conditions found in the oral cavity includes reactive lesions. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a prevalent condition characterized by an overgrowth, originating from the gingival tissue, periodontal ligament, and periosteum. The condition manifests as a small mucosal nodule and can be difficult to accurately identify since it resembles other lesions. Chronic irritation and trauma are considered to be etiological agents. It is more prevalent in females and typically impacts the anterior region of the maxilla and mandible. The recommended therapy for POF involves s…

Long-term follow-up of posterior implant restorations showing under-occlusion: a superimposition analysis of dentition change.

Under-occlusion ('infraocclusion' as defined in the natural teeth) after implant restoration in the posterior area is commonly encountered i … wing under-occlusion. Based on the result of superimposition, tooth elongation occurs mainly in the maxilla, and two types of positional changes occur in the mandible, specifically in the anterior-superior and posterior-inferior direction. The mechanism of under-occlusion of the posterior implant could be the result of tooth elongation and the relative po …

[Facial asymmetries : how to avoid maxillary osteotomy using mini-screws and bite planes? A case series].

INTRODUCTION: The cant of the occlusal plane in the frontal plane reflects facial asymmetry. Its treatment requires close collaboration between the orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon. In case of mild cant, treatment consists in coordination of dental arches followed by mandibular osteotomy. For more severe asymmetries, mandibular and maxillar surgery may be necessary to straighten the occlusal plane. However, this procedure can be disproportionate when the cant is moderate. The objective of our case series is to describe an orthodontic-surgical protocol straightening the occlusion plan…

Highlights on the Effects of Non-Coding RNAs in the Osteonecrosis of the Jaw.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is the progressive loss and destruction of bone affecting the maxilla or mandible in patients treated with antiresorptive and antiangiogenic agents without receiving prior radiation therapy. The pathogenesis involves the inflammatory pathway of receptor activator of nuclear factor NF-kB ligand and the macrophage colony-stimulating factor, essential for osteoclast precursors survival and proliferation and acting through its receptor c-Fms. Evidence has shown the role of non-coding RNAs in the pathogenesis of osteonecrosis of the jaw and this finding might be useful in d…

Newly revealed anatomy of the bucinator muscle: An anatomical and histological study.

BACKGROUND: Current anatomical knowledge of the origin of the bucinator muscle (BM), i.e., long thin attachments on the maxilla and mandible and the pterygomandibular raphe (PMR), is not supported by anatomical dissection of this muscle. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the detailed morphology of the BM and associated structures and to discuss its function. METHODS: The anatomy of the BM and related structures was investigated in 15 cadaveric heads using a surgical microscope and histological analysis. RESULTS: The inferior fibers of the BM originated from a small retromola…

Genetic Factors of Teeth Impaction: Polymorphic and Haplotype Variants of PAX9, MSX1, AXIN2, and IRF6 Genes.

In recent research, there has been a growing awareness of the role of genetic factors in the positioning and eruption of teeth in the maxilla and mandible. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of specific polymorphic markers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located within the PAX9, MSX1, AXIN2, and IRF6 genes to determine the predisposition to tooth impaction. The study participants were divided into two groups: the first group consisted of individuals with at least one impacted secondary tooth. In contrast, the second group (control group) had no impacted teeth in their jaws. T…

Buccal fat pad as a sealant in palatal mucosa tearing: technical note.

For patients with a dentofacial deformity undergoing a planned segmentation of the maxilla for the management of a transverse maxillary arch discrepancy, palatal mucosa tearing may occur during sawing or palatal expansion traction, giving rise to an oronasal communication. This technical note describes the covering of a tear in the palatal mucosa using a buccal fat pad (BFP) flap, in the context of maxillary segmentation during Le Fort I osteotomy. Through the limited buccal incision used for the Le Fort I osteotomy, a small incision is made in the right periosteum posteriorly, and a supraperi…

Angiomatous Nasal Polyp Diagnosed by Preoperative Imaging and Successfully Resected by Endonasal Endoscopic Surgery: A Case Report.

Angiomatous polyp is a benign, nonneoplastic nasal polyp that accounts for 4-5% of all inflammatory nasal polyps but is rarely reported in the literature. It can grow rapidly and exhibit an aggressive clinical behavior that can simulate malignant sinonasal tumor. We herein report a case of a 13-year-old boy with a rapidly growing angiomatous polyp in the nasal cavity. We had followed up the patient without significant changes for two years, but the tumor had rapidly grown in the last six months. At first, the rapid growth of the tumor and the bone erosion of the maxilla were suggestive of a ma…

Mini-implant and Modified Nance Button Assisted Alignment of a Horizontally Impacted Maxillary Canine - A Case Report.

Orthodontic alignment of a horizontally impacted canine placed high and deep in the maxilla represents a challenging clinical scenario. This article describes a case report of a 16-year-old postpubertal male patient who was concerned about an unesthetic smile. The clinical and radiographic investigations revealed that the patient had retained deciduous canines and bilaterally impacted maxillary canines. The right impacted canine had a good prognosis. The left canine was horizontally impacted in the labial side with a Kau-Pan-Gallerano index score of 19, which indicates a "difficult" degree of …
