Eggs of Trichuris trichiura were prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) by the dimethylsulfoxide freeze-cracking method. The egg-shell and oocyte were examined by SEM. The egg has a chitinous shell which consists of more than 10 layers of dense lamellae. The shell is bordered by a limiting membrane. An operculum and a collar made of chitinous shell together form the opercular area. The operculum is an empty cavity. Diffuse degeneration of the cerebral cortex and claustrum was found in the brain of a 7-week-old baby with profound psychomotor retardation, multiple ankyloses, seizures, and hypothalamic dysfunction. There was ubiquitous Pick cell formation and gliosis in the affected gray matter. The cortex was not atrophic; in fact, the brain was moderately enlarged. The clinical and pathological findings suggest that the disorder should be distinguished from Pick's disease, as well as from other congenital encephalopathies.

The structure of hairs from three patients with sulphur-deficient hair, trichothiodystrophy, has been studied by light, plane-polarizing and scanning electron microscopy. Severe cuticular and secondary cortical degeneration was evident along almost the entire length of the hair shaft, with cuticle loss, trichorrhexis nodosa formation and trichoschisis. The severity of these changes varied between patients. The role of the cuticle in protecting hair from environmental damage is discussed.

Sequential morphological changes were seen in RBCs, spleen and liver from hamsters during the development of haemoglobinaemia following infection with Leptospira interrogans serovar ballum. Spleens from pre-haemoglobinaemic hamsters showed sequestration of RBCs and erythrophagocytosis but to a lesser degree than was seen in the haemoglobinaemic hamsters. Strains 1001 and 1002, resistant varieties, do not undergo ultrastructural modifications. Shifts of the thyroid proteinase (cathepsin) activity in thyrotoxicosis were studied. It was found that both free and total activity of the thyroid lysosome cathepsins increase. The free activity, expressed as a percentage of the total one, is maximum in diffuse toxic goiter and is minimum in the healthy thyroid tissue. A lipid cell tumor of the ovary is described in an 18-year-old woman with secondary amenorrhea, hirsutism, and frank virilization. Current diagnostic features, preoperative and postoperative androgen determinations, and histomorphological and ultrastructural studies are presented. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are emphasized in this potentially malignant and disfiguring androgenic tumor that is readily amenable to surgery.
