Comparison of fibula plating versus fibula nailing: A systematic review with meta-analysis of all current comparative literature.

Ankle fracture surgeries are common orthopaedic procedures. Fibular fixation is often an important component in restoring ankle stability. Fibular intramedullary nailing (fIMN) has gained recent interest as an alternative technique to fibular plating. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare the outcomes of fibular nailing versus fibular plating for all current available literature. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted across MEDLINE/Pubmed, Cochrane, and Embase databases for cohort and clinical trial studies comparing outcomes of fibular nailing and fibu

Prospective Analysis of Asian Type 2 Integrated Lag Screws (Hip Fracture Nail) in Patients with Intertrochanteric Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The Hip Fracture Nail (HFN), developed by modifying the design and diameter of the INTERTAN nail, has been introduced to the market. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes, as well as the perioperative complications, associated with the use of the HFN in Asian patients with intertrochanteric fractures. METHODS: Patients over the age of 60 years with intertrochanteric fractures were prospectively enrolled at 6 university hospitals in South Korea and underwent surgical treatment using the HFN between October 2018 and January 2022. Patients wh

Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis using retrograde nailing (TTCAN) in post-traumatic conditions with high septic risk. Clinical experience.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis using retrograde nailing (TTCAN) in post-traumatic conditions with high septic risk. We hypothesized that this minimally invasive technique would achieve bone union and satisfactory functional recovery without increasing septic risk. METHODS: A prospective single-centre observational study included 20 patients who underwent TTCAN between January 2020 and December 2023. The primary outcome was the complete joint fusion rate at six months. Secondary outcomes included pain assessment, complications, functional evaluation using t

Localizing retrograde K-wire insertion points in distal phalanges using the nail plate: a clinical controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: Distal phalangeal fractures are the most common hand injuries, and K-wire fixation is the most frequently used surgical treatment. This study aims to utilize the nail plate shadow on preoperative X-ray images to locate the insertion point for retrograde(from the distal to the proximal direction of the distal phalanx) K-wire fixation of distal phalanges, thereby improving the accuracy of K-wire placement. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on 60 patients with distal phalangeal fractures from November 2020 to May 2024. Patients in Group A underwent retrograde longitudinal im

Retrograde femoral nailing for deformity correction and fracture treatment in osteogenesis imperfecta: clinical and radiological assessment of a novel technique.

INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary anterograde femoral nailing is a standard treatment for femoral deformity and fracture in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). This study evaluates the clinical and radiological outcomes of a novel retrograde femoral nailing technique. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 31 patients with OI who underwent retrograde femoral nailing using Dubow-Bailey nails from 2004 to 2019. A total of 54 femurs were treated for femoral deformity or fracture by three senior surgeons, with a mean follow-up of 2.7 years. Clinical outcomes, including knee range of motion and p…

The First Observation and Diagnosis of Nail-Patella Syndrome Using LV-SEM: GBM Abnormalities Mimicking Alport Syndrome.

We report the case of a 32-year-old man with a family history of nail patella syndrome (NPS) who presented with severe kidney dysfunction, hematuria, and proteinuria. A renal biopsy was performed to rule out other kidney diseases and obtain information on the possibility of future renal transplantation, as the renal morphology was relatively preserved and abnormal urinary findings indicative of nephritis. The scarcity of viable glomeruli for conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) prompted us to use low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (LV-SEM) on light microscopy samples. LV-SE

Transfersome enhances nail penetration of antifungal drug and photosensitizer for chemo-photodynamic therapy of onychomycosis in a novel rat model.

Onychomycosis is a prevalent nail infection caused by fungi, presenting significant treatment challenges due to poor drug penetration and high recurrence rates. Current treatments, including oral and topical antifungals, often have limited efficacy and can lead to resistance. Transfersomes are lipid vesicles that can penetrate skin for transdermal drug delivery. Here, a transfersome (termed THT) capable of penetrating nails to deliver a photosensitizer (hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether, HMME) and an antifungal chemotherapeutic drug (tavaborole) has been developed, achieving a chemo-photodynami…

A Multidisciplinary Approach to the Management of Unusual Bilateral Gingival Recession Due to a Factitious Nail-Scratching Habit: A Case Report.

Self-inflicted gingival injuries have been reported in children and adolescents as a result of multiple factors such as accidental trauma, fingernail biting, sucking on objects such as pencils, or a nail-scratching habit. Management of these lesions requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes psychotherapy, behavioral counseling, and definitive treatment of oral soft tissue lesions. This paper illustrates the diagnosis and treatment of a 16-year-old male patient with a bilateral gingival recession in mandibular canines due to habitual nail scratching. A multidisciplinary approach for t

Further experiments and remarks regarding the possible formation of blood stains on the Turin Shroud: stains attributed to the nailing of the hands.

The formation of red discolorations ('blood stains') on the Turin Shroud (TS), a Christian relic believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, is controversially discussed. We performed experiments to identify possible explanations for the formation of the stains on the hands and forearms of the Turin Shroud Man (TSM). In preliminary non-standardised experiments, after applying blood to the dorsal and palmar side of the probands' wrists, they moved their arms around at their own discretion to provoke blood flows as similar as possible to those on the TS. A blood stain pattern similar t
