Etiology of Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders and Squamous Cell Carcinoma Based on Cellular Stress Regulation and Matrix Stiffness.

The oral cavity serves as the initial segment of the digestive system and is responsible for both nutritional supplementation and the mechanical breakdown of food. It comprises distinct hard and soft tissues; the oral mucosa is subject to mechanical stress and interaction with microbiota. In oral cancer, tumors exhibit abnormal cellular networks and aberrant cell-cell interactions arising from complex interplays between environmental and genetic factors. This presents a challenge for clinicians and researchers, impeding the understanding of mechanisms driving oral cancer development and treatm

Tobacco use and its impact on survival in young patients with oral cancer.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco is a major risk factor associaetd with developing oral factor. Recent studies have shown that the age of onset, especially in Asia, is reducing. This study was to determine if tobacco exposure correlated with prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoms (OSCC) based on age at diagnosis. METHODS: Six hundred and forty three patients of OSCC treated in our institution were divided into four groups, younger patients (≤45 years) with or without tobacco exposure and older patients (>45 years) with or without tobacco exposure, and compared with respect to prognostically relevant va

Increased vitamin B12 levels in patients with oral cancer.

BACKGROUND: Oral cancer (OC), which happens to be one of the leading causes of death in the Indian population, is caused primarily by tobacco use, although other factors are also responsible. Serum vitamin B12 is important in maintaining the immune system and also repairing the damaged deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of cells. The aim of our study was to evaluate the serum B12 levels in patients with OC and look for any association between the two. METHODS: One hundred subjects were selected for the study and divided into two groups: group A having OC (including cases of oral squamous cell carcin

[Remodeling of the Tumor Microenvironment by Radiotherapy through the cGAS-STING Pathway in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma].

It has been reported that tumor cell-intrinsic cyclic GMP-AMP synthase(cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes(STING) pathway is essential for radiotherapy(RT)-induced activation of anti-tumor immune responses. However, its role in the RT- induced remodeling of the tumor microenvironment(TME)in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC), is largely unknown. In this study, we found that the tumor cell-intrinsic cGAS-STING pathway is a critical component for RT-induced activation of immune cells in the TME through the induction of type Ⅰ interferon and C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 in tumor cells i

[Prognostic impact of different tumor invasion patterns in the surgical treatment of T3 glottic laryngeal cancer].

Objective:To investigate the prognostic impact of different tumor invasion patterns in the surgical treatment of T3 glottic laryngeal cancer. Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 91 patients with T3 glottic laryngeal cancer. Results:Among the 91 patients, 58 cases (63.7%) had anterior invasion and 33 cases (36.3%) had posterior invasion. The posterior invasion was significantly correlated with invasions of the dorsal plate of cricoid cartilage (P<0.001), arytenoid cartilage (P= 0.001), and subglottic region(P = 0.001). There was no statistical difference in su

[Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas: a complication of severe forms of hereditary epidermolysis bullosa].

Despite an increase in life expectancy and quality of life for patients suffering from severe forms of hereditary epidermolysis bullosa, the occurrence of one or more cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas remains a sometimes serious complication, sometimes life-threatening as early as adolescence. These carcinomas occur preferably on chronic wounds or dystrophic scars in areas not exposed to the sun, and are generally multifocal and recurrent. Their clinical and histological diagnosis is difficult. Regular medical and paramedical monitoring of the skin during dressing repairs enables early detect

Anal and Perianal Preneoplastic Lesions.

Anal cancer, mainly squamous cell carcinoma, is rare but increasing in prevalence, as is its precursor lesion, anal squamous dysplasia. They are both strongly associated with human papillomavirus infection. The 2-tiered Lower Anogenital Squamous Terminology classification, low-grade SIL and high-grade SIL, is preferred to the 3-tiered anal intraepithelial neoplasia classification because of better interobserver agreement and clearer management implications. Immunohistochemistry with p16 is helpful to corroborate the diagnosis of squamous dysplasia. Similarly, immunohistochemistry is helpful to

Detection of cytological abnormalities in urothelial cells from individuals previously exposed or currently infected with Schistosoma haematobium.

Urinary schistosomiasis has long been associated with bladder cancer, but it is still not clear the mechanisms involved. Schistosoma haematobium causes injury and disruptions in the integrity of the urothelium. The cellular and immunologic responses to the infection lead to the formation of granulomata. The ability to use cellular morphological changes to predict the risk of developing bladder cancer following S. haematobium infection is thus important. This study assessed the cellular changes in the urine associated with schistosomiasis and the potential of routine urine being used as a risk

[A Case of Two-Stage Operation for Esophageal Cancer with Sarcoidosis].

A 69-year-old man with dysphagia was diagnosed with advanced esophageal cancer by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. He had undergone pancreatic tail and partial transverse colon resection for pancreatic cancer, and right hilar lymph node biopsy and partial lower lobe resection for the diagnosis of pulmonary sarcoidosis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)scan showed no change over time in lymph node enlargement in the mediastinum, so metastasis of esophageal cancer was considered to be negative. Therefore, the diagnosis of advanced esophageal cancer, Mt, type 2, T2N0M0, cStage Ⅱ, was mad

Identification of cell types in multiplexed in situ images by combining protein expression and spatial information using CELESTA.

Advances in multiplexed in situ imaging are revealing important insights in spatial biology. However, cell type identification remains a major challenge in imaging analysis, with most existing methods involving substantial manual assessment and subjective decisions for thousands of cells. We developed an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, CELESTA, which identifies the cell type of each cell, individually, using the cell's marker expression profile and, when needed, its spatial information. We demonstrate the performance of CELESTA on multiplexed immunofluorescence images of colorectal ca

Treatment Options in Early Stage (Stage I and II) of Oropharyngeal Cancer: A Narrative Review.

OBJECTIVE: to show an overview on the treatments' options for stage I and II oropharyngeal carcinomasquamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). BACKGROUND: The traditional primary treatment modality of OPSCC at early stages is intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS) has offered as an alternative, less invasive surgical option. Patients with human papilloma virus (HPV)-positive OPSCC have distinct staging with better overall survival in comparison with HPV-negative OPSCC patients. METHODS: a comprehensive review of the English language literature was performed usi

Squamous cell carcinoma of verrucous type in the setting of prior pyoderma gangrenosum: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pyoderma gangrenosum and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma are two conditions well reported in the literature and may exist concurrently in the same patient. In fact, there have been reports of misdiagnosis of one for the other. The two conditions occurring in the same location, however, has not yet been reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 57-year-old Caucasian male with history of pyoderma gangrenosum of the right lateral tibial area who developed squamous cell carcinoma of verrucous type at the same site. Excisional surgery was considered to treat this patient,

Interventional treatment of keratoacanthoderma: a case report.

This current case report describes a 56-year-old male patient with a skin mass on his lip that had been growing for 1 year. The pathological findings demonstrated that the epidermis was characterized by hyperkeratosis, hyperplasia and hypertrophy and was formed in the shape of a crater. The skin on both ends had developed into a ball-like growth that resembled a volcanic cone. There was invasive growth of heterotype squamous epithelium and a small number of inflammatory cells infiltrating the dermis. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated an increase in P16 (the focus, +) and the hot spot Ki-67 ind
