Intraoperative discovery of neuroblastoma in an infant with pulmonary atresia.

There have been 28 previously reported cases of neuroblastoma associated with congenital heart disease. Because many of these have been defects of the conotruncal region, it has been proposed that abnormal neural crest cell migration or maturation may be a factor that links these normally disparate pathologic conditions. Most neuroblastomas in these cases have been detected at autopsy or by radiologic studies conducted in the evaluation of the cardiac anomalies. Recently, we discovered an occult posterior mediastinal neuroblastoma in a patient undergoing a unifocalization procedure for tetralo

Multimodal evoked potentials of Kennedy's disease.

BACKGROUND: Kennedy's disease (KD) is an X-linked recessive polyglutamine disease. Traditionally, it is a lower motor neuron syndrome with additional features such as gynecomastia and tremor. Sensory symptoms are minimal if ever present. We used multimodal evoked potential (EPs) tests to study the distribution of the involvement of the disease. METHODS: Visual, brainstem auditory, somatosensory and motor EPs were studied in six KD patients. All of them had typical presentations and had been proved genetically. RESULTS: Abnormal findings were noted as follows: prolonged peak latencies of visu

MRI correlates of emotion recognition in vascular dementia: An empty systematic review.

Emotion recognition is a core component of social cognition and has been extensively investigated in several neurodegenerative disorders. However, despite the high prevalence and heterogeneous cerebrovascular pathology of vascular dementia (VaD), evidence on emotion recognition in this population remains fragmented and poorly characterized at the neuroimaging level. This study conducted an empty systematic review to evaluate the current state of MRI-based research and identify critical gaps in the literature. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, systematic searches were performed in Scopus, E

PDDUNet: A primal-dual deep unrolling network for CT metal artifact reduction.

In computed tomography (CT) imaging, severe artifacts caused by metallic implants within patients degrade image quality and compromise clinical diagnostic accuracy. Currently, deep unrolling-based methods have demonstrated strong capability in metal artifact reduction (MAR). However, these methods primarily focus only on the unfoldment of data fidelity term, limiting their effectiveness. To overcome this issue, both the data fidelity term and the regularization term were unrolled to construct a Primal-Dual Deep Unrolling Network (PDDUNet) for MAR. First, a unified optimization model formulated

[Research on electrical impedance tomography for pediatric pneumonia based on an improved radial basis function neural network].

In the diagnosis of pediatric pneumonia, the weak conductivity contrast of lung tissues leads to limited image resolution in electrical impedance tomography (EIT). To improve the quality of image reconstruction, this study proposes a radial basis function neural network optimized by the crested porcupine optimizer and adaptive moment estimation (CPOA-RBFNN). By integrating the global search capability of swarm intelligence with the adaptive characteristics of gradient based optimization, the proposed method enhances both imaging accuracy and robustness. A total of 23 000 simulated datasets of

Prefrontal-limbic circuit modulation in anxiety disorders: Differential neural effects of psychotherapy versus pharmacotherapy revealed by ALE meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders (ADs) involve dysregulation of prefrontal-limbic circuits, but the neural effects of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of task-based fMRI studies reporting pre- and post-treatment whole-brain coordinates in ADs. Separate analyses were performed for psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. A random-effects synthesis assessed changes in primary anxiety symptoms where extractable data were available. RESULTS: 27 studies involving 561 patients were included. Psychotherapy was ass

Intramedullary Neural Stem Cell Transplantation in Spinal Cord Injury: Timing, Targets, and Techniques.

Spinal cord injury remains one of the most challenging neurological disorders due to limited intrinsic regeneration. Neural stem cell (NSC) transplantation offers a promising strategy for restoring neural circuitry and functional recovery. Among delivery methods, direct intramedullary transplantation provides the most localized graft placement and has shown encouraging safety and efficacy in early clinical trials. This review summarizes current evidence and technical considerations for intramedullary NSC transplantation. Key factors influencing outcomes include timing after injury, cell source

Purinergic receptor antagonism reduces interictal discharges and rescues cognitive function in a mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders globally. Current treatments mainly target neuronal activity, often overlooking the involvement of astrocytes and microglia in epilepsy's pathophysiology. Here, we explored the impact of purinergic receptors, predominantly found in glial tissue, on epileptiform activity. We used TNP-ATP, a potent purinergic receptor antagonist, and conducted experiments using a mouse model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy to examine behavioral performance and neural activity patterns. Our findings reveal that although TNP-ATP treatment did not signif

Neural basis of self-esteem: social cognitive and emotional regulation insights.

INTRODUCTION: Self-esteem (SE) can significantly affect individual well-being and has been linked to various psychiatric conditions. SE involves cognitive and emotional regulation within a social context. Prior research focusing on young adults has indicated neural correlations in prefrontal cortex areas but presented inconsistent findings. Our study expanded this to a broader age range and covariates, and examined the influence of subthreshold depression, emphasizing the functional role of the dorsolateral (dlPFC), ventrolateral prefrontal cortices (vlPFC) and cerebellum in social cognition a

Male Caenorhabditis elegans optimizes avoidance behavior against acute and chronic stress for successful mating with hermaphrodites.

The optimization of avoidance behaviors in response to stress is an instinctual life function universally present in animals. In many sexually dimorphic animals, males exhibit higher stress resistance than females, but there have been no reports of comparative studies on stress resistance in sexually dimorphic hermaphrodites capable of reproducing alone. In the present study, we aimed to utilize a reversal/turn behavioral choice to conduct a comparative analysis of optimized avoidance behavior patterns in hermaphrodite and male Caenorhabditis elegans. We found that C. elegans males showed grea

Using deep learning artificial intelligence for sex identification and taxonomy of sand fly species.

Sandflies are vectors for several tropical diseases such as leishmaniasis, bartonellosis, and sandfly fever. Moreover, sandflies exhibit species-specificity in transmitting particular pathogen species, with females being responsible for disease transmission. Thus, effective classification of sandfly species and the corresponding sex identification are important for disease surveillance and control, managing breeding/populations, research and development, and conducting epidemiological studies. This is typically performed manually by observing internal morphological features, which maybe an err

Hippocampal sharp-wave ripples and hippocampal-prefrontal synchrony regulate memory-enhancing effects of intranasal insulin in an STZ-induced Alzheimer's model.

AIMS: Alzheimer's disease is characterized by memory loss and pathological changes in the brain, such as amyloid beta and tau pathology, disruptions in neural circuits and neuronal oscillations are also significant indicators of this disease and potential therapeutic targets. We studied how intranasal insulin impacts memory and neural oscillations in an Alzheimer's disease rat model induced by STZ. MAIN METHODS: Male Wistar rats were intracerebroventricularly injected with STZ, followed by intranasal insulin therapy. Electrophysiological recordings were conducted in the hippocampus and medial

Dynamic decoding and dual synthetic data for automatic correction of grammar in low-resource scenario.

Grammar error correction systems are pivotal in the field of natural language processing (NLP), with a primary focus on identifying and correcting the grammatical integrity of written text. This is crucial for both language learning and formal communication. Recently, neural machine translation (NMT) has emerged as a promising approach in high demand. However, this approach faces significant challenges, particularly the scarcity of training data and the complexity of grammar error correction (GEC), especially for low-resource languages such as Indonesian. To address these challenges, we propos

Aided diagnosis of cervical spondylotic myelopathy using deep learning methods based on electroencephalography.

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is the most severe type of cervical spondylosis. It is challenging to achieve early diagnosis with current clinical diagnostic tools. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep learning approach for early diagnosis of CSM. Electroencephalography (EEG) experiments were conducted with patients having spinal cord cervical spondylosis and age-matched normal subjects. A Convolutional Neural Network with Long Short-Term Memory Networks (CNN-LSTM) model was employed for the classification of patients versus normal individuals. In contrast, a Convolutional Neura

Photophobia: shared pathophysiology underlying dry eye disease, migraine and traumatic brain injury leading to central neuroplasticity of the trigeminothalamic pathway.

BACKGROUND: Photophobia is a potentially debilitating symptom often found in dry eye disease (DE), migraine and traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: We conducted a review of the literature via a PubMed search of English language articles with a focus on how photophobia may relate to a shared pathophysiology across DE, migraine and TBI. RESULTS: DE, migraine and TBI are common conditions in the general population, are often comorbid, and share photophobia as a symptom. Across the three conditions, neural dysregulation of peripheral and central nervous system components is implicated in phot

Tinnitus and cognition: Can load theory help us refine our understanding?

Objective: Tinnitus has been shown to be associated with specific cognitive deficits. Contemporary models of tinnitus, based primarily on human behavior, emphasize the influence of the cognitive response to tinnitus in tinnitus manifestation and level of associated annoyance. The models and hypotheses proposed thus far have (a) focused on the cognitive response to the onset of tinnitus, and not necessarily focused on the cognitive consequences of established chronic tinnitus, and (b) failed to dissociate the contributions of cognitive and perceptual load in their theories. Load theory states t

Involvement of human left frontoparietal cortices in neural processes associated with task-switching between two sequences of skilled finger movements.

In this study, we demonstrate the involvement of left frontoparietal cortices in neural processes for task-switching between skilled movements. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was conducted while thirty-two right-handed healthy participants performed two sequential finger-movement tasks with their left hands. One group (n = 16) trained these tasks through random-practice (tasks were either switched or repeated trial by trial) on one day and blocked-practice (successive intensive practice of each task) on the next day, while the remaining participants practiced in the reverse order. Frontal asymmetry as a mediator and moderator of emotion: An updated review.

For over 35 years, research has examined frontal alpha EEG asymmetry, discussed in terms of relative left frontal activity (rLFA) in the present review, as a concurrent and prospective marker of affective processing and psychopathology. Because rLFA may index (a) neural correlates of frontal asymmetry, or (b) psychological constructs to which frontal asymmetry relates, rLFA can advance our understanding of both neural and psychological models of emotion and psychopathology. In order to improve such understanding, the specific role of rLFA in extending or challenging existing theory must be cle

Sex differences in the development of emotion circuitry in adolescents at risk for substance abuse: a longitudinal fMRI study.

There is substantial evidence for behavioral sex differences in risk trajectories for alcohol and substance use, with internalizing factors such as negative affectivity contributing more to female risk. Because the neural development of emotion circuitry varies between males and females across adolescence, it represents a potential mechanism by which underlying neurobiology contributes to risk for substance use. Longitudinal functional magnetic resonance imaging was conducted in males and females (n = 18 each) with a family history of alcohol use disorders starting at ages 8-13 years. Particip
