The Application of Deep Learning in the Risk Grading of Skin Tumors for Patients Using Clinical Images.

According to diagnostic criteria, skin tumors can be divided into three categories: benign, low degree and high degree malignancy. For high degree malignant skin tumors, if not detected in time, they can do serious harm to patients' health. However, in clinical practice, identifying malignant degree requires biopsy and pathological examination which is time costly. Furthermore, in many areas, due to the severe shortage of dermatologists, it's inconvenient for patients to go to hospital for examination. Therefore, an easy to access screening method of malignant skin tumors is needed urgently. F

Predicting the serum digoxin concentrations of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit through an artificial neural network.

BACKGROUND: Given its narrow therapeutic range, digoxin's pharmacokinetic parameters in infants are difficult to predict due to variation in birth weight and gestational age, especially for critically ill newborns. There is limited evidence to support the safety and dosage requirements of digoxin, let alone to predict its concentrations in infants. This study aimed to compare the concentrations of digoxin predicted by traditional regression modeling and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling for newborn infants given digoxin for clinically significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). METHODS

Automatic Cone Photoreceptor Localisation in Healthy and Stargardt Afflicted Retinas Using Deep Learning.

We present a robust deep learning framework for the automatic localisation of cone photoreceptor cells in Adaptive Optics Scanning Light Ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) split-detection images. Monitoring cone photoreceptors with AOSLO imaging grants an excellent view into retinal structure and health, provides new perspectives into well known pathologies, and allows clinicians to monitor the effectiveness of experimental treatments. The MultiDimensional Recurrent Neural Network (MDRNN) approach developed in this paper is the first method capable of reliably and automatically identifying cones in both h

The hepatotoxic potential of protein kinase inhibitors predicted with Random Forest and Artificial Neural Networks.

Protein kinases (PKs) play a role in many pivotal aspects of cellular function. Dysregulation and mutations of protein kinases are involved in the development of different diseases, which might be treated by inhibition of the corresponding kinase. Protein kinase inhibitors (PKIs) are generally well tolerated, but unexpected and serious adverse events on the heart, lung, kidney and liver were observed clinically. In this study, the structure-activity relationship of PKIs in relation to hepatotoxicity was investigated. A dataset of 165 PKIs was compiled and the probability of human hepatotoxicit

Automatic Estimation of Volumetric Breast Density Using Artificial Neural Network-Based Calibration of Full-Field Digital Mammography: Feasibility on Japanese Women With and Without Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer among women and its incidence is increasing. Risk assessment is valuable and recent methods are incorporating novel biomarkers such as mammographic density. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are adaptive algorithms capable of performing pattern-to-pattern learning and are well suited for medical applications. They are potentially useful for calibrating full-field digital mammography (FFDM) for quantitative analysis. This study uses ANN modeling to estimate volumetric breast density (VBD) from FFDM on Japanese women with and without breast cancer.

A symptom network structure of the psychosis spectrum.

Current diagnostic systems mainly focus on symptoms needed to classify patients with a specific mental disorder and do not take into account the variation in co-occurring symptoms and the interaction between the symptoms themselves. The innovative network approach aims to further our understanding of mental disorders by focusing on meaningful connections between individual symptoms of a disorder and has thus far proven valuable insights to psychopathology. The aims of current study were to I) construct a symptom network and investigate interactions between a wide array of psychotic symptoms; I

The classification of oximetry signals using Bayesian neural networks to assist in the detection of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

In the present study, multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks were applied to help in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). Oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) recordings from nocturnal pulse oximetry were used for this purpose. We performed time and spectral analysis of these signals to extract 14 features related to OSAS. The performance of two different MLP classifiers was compared: maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian (BY) MLP networks. A total of 187 subjects suspected of suffering from OSAS took part in the study. Their SaO(2) signals were divided into a training set with

Optimization and evaluation of time-dependent tablets comprising an immediate and sustained release profile using artificial neural network.

The aim of this work was to optimize time-dependent tablets using artificial neural network (ANN). The time-dependent tablet consisted of a tablet core, which contained sustained release pellets (70% isosorbide-5-mononitrate [5-ISMN]), immediate release granules (30% 5-ISMN), superdisintegrating agent (sodium carboxymethylstarch, CMS-Na), and other excipients, surrounded by a coating layer composed of a water-insoluble ethylcellulose and a water-soluble channeling agent. The chosen independent variables, i.e., X(1) coating level of tablets, X(2) coating level of pellets, and X(3) CMS-Na level,

Artificial neural network model for identifying taxi gross emitter from remote sensing data of vehicle emission.

Vehicle emission has been the major source of air pollution in urban areas in the past two decades. This article proposes an artificial neural network model for identifying the taxi gross emitters based on the remote sensing data. After carrying out the field test in Guangzhou and analyzing various factors from the emission data, the artificial neural network modeling was proved to be an advisable method of identifying the gross emitters. On the basis of the principal component analysis and the selection of algorithm and architecture, the Back-Propagation neural network model with 8-17-1 archi

Application of artificial neural network models to analyse the relationships between Gammarus pulex L. (Crustacea, Amphipoda) and river characteristics.

This study aimed at analysing the relationship between river characteristics and abundance of Gammarus pulex. To this end, four methods which can identify the relative contribution and/or the contribution profile of the input variables in neural networks describing the habitat preferences of this species were compared: (i) the "PaD" ("Partial Derivatives") method consists of a calculation of the partial derivatives of the output in relation to the input variables; (ii) the "Weights" method is a computation using the connection weights of the backpropagation Artificial Neural Networks; (iii) th

Soft-computing base analyses of the relationship between annoyance and coping with noise and odor.

The majority of research on annoyance as an important impact of noise, odor, and other stressors on man, has regarded the person as a passive receptor. It was however recognized that this person is an active participant trying to alter a troubled person-environment relationship or to sustain a desirable one. Coping has to be incorporated. This is of particular importance in changing exposure situations. For large populations a lot of insight can be gained by looking at average effects only. To investigate changes in annoyance and effects of coping, the individual or small group has to be studi

Are there lexicons?

Many models of the processing of printed or spoken words or objects or faces propose that systems of local representations of the forms of such stimuli--lexicons--exist. This is denied by partisans of the distributed-representation connectionist approach to cognitive modelling. An experimental paradigm of key theoretical importance here is lexical decision and its analogue in the domain of objects, object decision. How does each theoretical camp account for our ability to perform these two tasks? The localists say that the tasks are done by matching or failing to match a stimulus to a local re

Classification of equinus in ambulatory children with cerebral palsy-discrimination between dynamic tightness and fixed contracture.

In this study a generalised dynamic neural network (GDNN) was designed to process gait analysis parameters to evaluate equinus deformity in ambulatory children with cerebral palsy. The aim was to differentiate dynamic calf muscle tightness from fixed muscle contracture. Patients underwent clinical examination and had instrumented gait analysis before evaluating their equinus under anaesthesia and muscle relaxation at the time of surgery to improve gait. The performance of the clinical examination, the subjective interpretation of gait analysis results, and the application of the neural network

Novel analytical methods applied to type 1 diabetes genome-scan data.

Complex traits like type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are generally taken to be under the influence of multiple genes interacting with each other to confer disease susceptibility and/or protection. Although novel methods are being developed, analyses of whole-genome scans are most often performed with multipoint methods that work under the assumption that multiple trait loci are unrelated to each other; that is, most models specify the effect of only one locus at a time. We have applied a novel approach, which includes decision-tree construction and artificial neural networks, to the analysis of

Learning Protein-Protein Binding Free Energies from Interface Graphs and Physicochemical Descriptors.

Predicting protein-protein binding free energy (ΔG) from structure remains a central challenge in computational biophysics. Here, we present GULP (Graph-based Unified Learning for Protein binding), a graph neural network (GNN) that jointly learns from a residue-level graph representation of the binding interface and global physicochemical descriptors. We systematically investigate how training data distribution affects model performance by comparing a full training set with a balanced subset enriched for extreme-affinity complexes. GULP is computationally efficient and provides interpretable i

Animal models of the human brain: Successes, limitations, and alternatives.

The last three decades of research in human cognitive neuroscience have given us an initial "parts list" for the human mind in the form of a set of cortical regions with distinct and often very specific functions. But current neuroscientific methods in humans have limited ability to reveal exactly what these regions represent and compute, the causal role of each in behavior, and the interactions among regions that produce real-world cognition. Animal models can help to answer these questions when homologues exist in other species, like the face system in macaques. When homologues do not exist

Deep Learning for Automated Analysis of Cellular and Extracellular Components of the Foreign Body Response in Multiphoton Microscopy Images.

The Foreign body response (FBR) is a major unresolved challenge that compromises medical implant integration and function by inflammation and fibrotic encapsulation. Mice implanted with polymeric scaffolds coupled to intravital non-linear multiphoton microscopy acquisition enable multiparametric, longitudinal investigation of the FBR evolution and interference strategies. However, follow-up analyses based on visual localization and manual segmentation are extremely time-consuming, subject to human error, and do not allow for automated parameter extraction. We developed an integrated computatio

Scalability of a graph neural network in accurate prediction of frictional contact networks in suspensions.

Dense suspensions often exhibit shear thickening, characterized by a dramatic increase in viscosity under large external forcing. This behavior has recently been linked to the formation of a system-spanning frictional contact network (FCN), which contributes to increased resistance during deformation. However, identifying these frictional contacts poses experimental challenges and is computationally expensive. This study introduces a graph neural network (GNN) model designed to accurately predict FCNs by two dimensional simulations of dense shear thickening suspensions. The results demonstrate
