Cranial molding on neonates in Ghana: mothers' perspective and their knowledge on potential harm to babies' brain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traditional cranial molding is an ancient practice prevalent in Ghana. In this work, we aimed at assessing mothers'/caregivers' perspective and their knowledge on potential harm of cranial molding on neonates. METHODS: Two hundred and one (201) nursing mothers with babies aged 1-12 months were sampled in a cross-sectional study using questionnaires. We assessed the mothers'/caregivers' reasons for cranial molding, their perceived benefits of this practice, and their knowledge about the potential harm this practice pose to babies. RESULTS: Sixty four percent (64%) o

Exercise to Mitigate the Effects of Aging With HIV: A Narrative Review With Exercise Recommendations for Practice.

Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has extended the lifespan of people living with HIV (PWH), many experience complex age-related comorbidities and functional decline. Nurses are increasingly caring for PWH navigating cardiometabolic disease, neurocognitive changes, frailty, and mental health challenges. This narrative review provides a multidimensional overview of aging with HIV and highlights the role of exercise as an accessible, evidence-based strategy to support healthy aging. Chronic immune activation and long-term ART use contribute to inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, cardiom

The lifecycle of a grant: Award acceptance to dissemination.

Securing grant funding is an important achievement for nurse practitioners and academic faculty, yet the postaward phase introduces complex administrative, regulatory, and scholarly responsibilities essential to project success. This article is the second in a two-part series examining the lifecycle of a grant. Building on part 1, which focused on preaward planning and proposal development, this manuscript addresses postaward activities from award acceptance through dissemination. Drawing on the authors' shared experience as principal investigators and project directors, the article provides p

Strategies to Improve Compliance With Smoke Safety.

Surgical smoke generated by energy-based devices is a recognized occupational hazard in ORs, containing toxic gases, particulate matter, and potentially viable cells. Exposure can lead to negative consequences. Research shows perioperative nurses are reporting twice the incidence of respiratory problems as compared to the general population. Despite increasing evidence of harm, evacuation of surgical smoke remains inconsistent across health care settings. Barriers to compliance include the lack of formal education on smoke hazards and evacuation equipment. Effective strategies to improve compl

Evaluating Normal Saline Locking With Totally Implanted Vascular Access Devices for Patients on 90-Day Maintenance Flushing.

BACKGROUND: Heparin has been the preferred locking solution for many organizations for totally implanted vascular access devices (TIVADs). Published data are limited on the use of normal saline alone as a locking solution for TIVAD 90-day maintenance flushing. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this evidence-based practice initiative was to determine whether locking TIVADs with normal saline alone during a 90-day maintenance flushing protocol resulted in an increase in partial occlusions. METHODS: A clinical team monitored alteplase administration to measure partial occlusions. Prior to heparin deim

Identifying Top Research Priorities in Perioperative Nursing: An eDelphi Study of AORN Guideline Gaps.

AORN published an extensive list of research priorities (2023-2028), spanning 34 guidelines and more than 400 subtopics, posing a challenge for focused research. To address this "choice overload" and guide future efforts, we followed Guidance on Conducting and Reporting Delphi Studies reporting guidelines and conducted an eDelphi study with a panel of perioperative nurse experts. Through five iterative rounds, including surveys and a concluding virtual focus group, panelists achieved consensus on the most essential research needs. The study successfully identified the top five AORN guideline r

Can nurse education foster professional authenticity? Four tensions within a regulated profession.

Professional authenticity has recently been positioned as a form of resistance to restrictive understandings of professionalism (Melino et al., 2025). Yet treating it as a straightforward educational goal may obscure tensions between individual expression and professional accountability. This commentary positions professional authenticity as ethically accountable, context-responsive practice rather than a personality trait or unrestricted expression of a 'true self'. The paper also examines four tensions that complicate professional authenticity in nurse education: personal values versus profe

In-Hospital Initiation of Guideline-Directed Heart Failure Pharmacotherapy to Improve Long-Term Patient Adherence and Outcomes.

Heart failure is a burdensome cardiovascular condition associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. The 3-month period after hospitalization is a vulnerable phase in which patients are at high risk for mortality and rehospitalization. To reduce risk during this period, patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction should receive guideline-directed pharmacological therapies-the right drugs at the right doses-before hospital discharge. Optimal pharmacotherapies for these patients include agents that suppress the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, suppress the sympathetic

Drug profiles: maximizing therapeutic effectiveness.

Major cardiac events are inevitably followed with a pharmacologic plan of therapy for cardiac patients. Careful assessment of the patient's drug regimen is an important aspect of cardiovascular nursing practice. Such assessment will reveal implications for education, compliance counseling, and side effect evaluation. A thorough drug history should include information about both prescription and nonprescription drug use. Assessment for adherence is improved by using supportive, open-ended questions. Assessment for side effects that affect quality of life is important, particularly in the area o

Incidence and Severity of Nurse-Sensitive Adverse Events in Older Adults After Physical Trauma: A Medical Record Review.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and characteristics of nursing-sensitive adverse events (NSAEs) in older adults (≥ 65 years) hospitalised with traumatic injuries, and to explore associations with frailty, demographic factors, injury characteristics and hospital-related factors. DESIGN: NSAEs were identified through a retrospective medical record review of a prospectively collected cohort. METHODS: Patients ≥ 65 years admitted with physical trauma to a Swedish level I trauma centre between 2020 and 2024 were included. NSAEs were identified using a modified trigger tool char

Effects of nurse-led multidisciplinary team management on cardiovascular hospitalization and quality of life in patients with atrial fibrillation: Randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is globally the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia which increases patient morbidity and mortality, dramatically influencing well-being. Despite substantial efforts, an optimal clinical pathway for chronic atrial fibrillation management has yet to be developed. In recent practice, a multidisciplinary team management has been recommended for patients with atrial fibrillation. However, experiments exploring nurse-led multidisciplinary team management in chronic atrial fibrillation management relative to standard clinical management are still sparse and limit
