Twenty-two foals were divided into groups of intestinal distension and intestinal ischaemia as methods to induce peritoneal adhesions. In the first group, the lumen of a segment of distal small intestine was occluded without extramural vascular compromise and distended with lactated Ringer's solution to a constant pressure of 25 cm H2O for 2 h within the abdomen. Twenty-five cases of multilocular peritoneal inclusion cysts (MPIC) were investigated. All but four cases were associated with a history of a previous abdominal or pelvic operation, or evidence of endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease, or combinations of these findings. Seventy-two perforated gastroduodenal ulcers were treated by an original method aimed at avoiding emergency surgery, which consists of peritoneal dialysis associated, during 3 days, with gastric aspiration. Over a 3-year period this method was applied to all patients admitted with a perforated ulcer. Acute renal failure and pulmonary edema developed in a 1-month-old baby with necrotizing enterocolitis and hypovolemic shock. Following resection of 93% of her small intestine and mesentery, peritoneal dialysis was started; it was terminated 96 h later with complete recovery of renal and pulmonary functions. A retrospective study of 10 cases of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma from two centers is reported. All cases were initially diagnosed between 1967 and 1986 utilizing laparoscopy and the histologic interpretation of laparoscopic biopsy samples. Subsequently, the original diagnosis was confirmed by two independent pathologists employing both histological and histochemical techniques. Report on a 67-year-old man with echinococcus-granulosus-cysts in liver, lungs, spleen and mesentery since at least 31 years. In 1969 and 1974 surgical intervention was performed. In 1983 suppurative colliquation and spontaneous depletion by a fistula of a cyst of the liver, output of the cysts of the right lung by coughing. In 1986 spontaneous resorption of a cyst of the left lobe of the liver. In 1987 measurable shrinking of a cyst of the left lower lobe of the lung. Two until today existing cysts (spleen and upper part of the abdomen in the midline) are in supervision by sonography.

A limited prospective study of 334 peritoneal and pleural fluids demonstrated Curschmann's spirals in 12 specimens, a prevalence of 1 in 28 cases. Nine of these 12 specimens were peritoneal washings, 2 specimens were pleural fluids, and 1 specimen was a peritoneal dialysis fluid. The fluids came from nine women and three men. Those local treatments that are most used clinically for the prevention of adhesions in the pelvis have been evaluated experimentally using peritoneal abrasion in the rat. Seven patients treated in infancy by a lumbar theco-peritoneal shunt for idiopathic communicating hydrocephalus presented later in childhood after developing a characteristic orthopaedic syndrome. Combined use of intraperitoneal lavage with dextrose 5% and water and an aggressive surgical approach has thus far successfully prevented reaccumulation of pseudomyxoma peritonei originating from bilateral ovarian mucinous cystadenoma associated with multiple peritoneal implants. Three and a half years after treatment the patient remains without clinical or ultrasonographic evidence of recurrence.

This article does not deal with the general problem of splenosis, but with the pathology of splenic nodules implanted in the peritoneum. This condition is uncommon, and chiefly hematological and infectious in the index case. beta-Glucuronidase secreted by mouse 3T3 fibroblasts in vitro was taken up into mouse peritoneal macrophages and into human fibroblasts by a process which was rapid and saturable. High concentrations of mannose-containing compounds inhibited uptake into macrophages but had no effect on uptake into fibroblasts. Colchicine inhibits processes known to be involved in the pathogenesis of peritoneal adhesions. Daily administration of 50 micrograms of colchicine to 22 rats significantly diminished adhesion formation, as compared with dexamethasone-treated and untreated rats. Rats that developed at least three adhesions of grade 3 (scale 0 to 4) were strikingly less prevalent among the colchicine-treated animals than the untreated group (9.1% versus 40.9%, P less than 0.001).
