This study investigates the potential reuse of Prunus spinosa (blackthorn) seeds, a food industry by-product. Traditionally discarded, these seeds are now being explored for their bioactive compounds. In this work, seeds were used as raw material for supercritical CO2 extraction. Two distinct extracts were obtained at low and high pressure (SFE90 and SFE200) and both extracts presented an aqueous phase (WE90 and WE200). SFE90 analysis by GC/MS allowed us to identify benzaldehyde and fatty acids (mainly oleic and linoleic acids). The fatty acid profile of SFE200, determined by HPLC-DAD/ELSD, sh

Treatment options for uterine myomas - the most commonly occurring benign tumors of the female reproductive organs - are varied and include pharmacological therapies, radiological management, as well as surgery. The choice of treatment option should take effectiveness and safety into account, whilst considering also the expectations of the individual patient, e.g., the desire to preserve the uterus irrespective of reproductive goals. Advances in the pathophysiology of myomas have led to the search for new therapies that fulfil these criteria. EGCG - catechin is the primary bioactive polyphenol

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL), including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), Burkitt lymphoma (BL), and follicular lymphoma (FL), predominantly arise from B cells undergoing germinal center (GC) reactions. The transcriptional repressor B-cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6) is indispensable for GC formation and contributes to lymphomagenesis via its BTB domain-mediated suppression of target genes. Dysregulation of BCL6 underpins the pathogenesis of GC-derived NHL. While pharmacological targeting the BCL6-BTB domain has shown therapeutic promise, natural product-based inhibitors remain underexplored. In thi

Streptomyces scabies is a pathogenic actinomycete that infects potato crops and commonly causes scab-like lesions on potato tubers. Screening of strains antagonistic towards S. scabies in the natural environment was performed in this study. This study focused on the extraction of antibacterial substances and changes in potato defense enzymes and the rhizosphere microbiota. Together, these factors constitute biological control mechanisms. Pot experiments showed that Bacillus atrophaeus CY1 reduced the infection of scabs caused by S. scabies from 92 % to 60 % and the disease index from 62 % to 2

Mycobacterium abscessus (MAB) is an increasingly recognized rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacterial pathogen whose infection is particularly challenging to treat due to its antibiotic resistance and persistence, necessitating the exploration of innovative treatment strategies. In this study, it is demonstrated that punicalagin, a polyphenolic compound derived from pomegranate, enhances macrophage antibacterial activity by promoting autophagy rather than exerting direct bactericidal effects. In THP-1 macrophages, punicalagin at 40 µm reduced intracellular MAB by 47% at 24 h post-infection.

The relationship between alcohol consumption and incident ischemic heart disease and stroke is characterized by a J- or U-shape. This denotes that light drinking has a preventive effect on cardiovascular diseases. Effects of alcohol drinking on lipid metabolism including an increase in HDL cholesterol concentration and a decrease in LDL cholesterol concentration are the main reasons for the anti-atherosclerotic action of alcohol. The antithrombotic effect of alcohol through the inhibition of platelet function is also involved in the lower incidence of ischemic arterial disease in drinkers. Cap

Olive oil polyphenol hydroxytyrosol (HT) significantly repairs intestinal barrier function, but its absorption in the stomach and small intestine is limited. The metabolites of unabsorbed HT that reach the colon are crucial, yet their effects on colonic microbiota and intestinal barrier repair remain unclear. This study utilized in vitro simulated digestion and colonic fecal fermentation to investigate HT's digestion and fermentation. Results indicated that 79.25% of HT potentially reached the colon intact. Further 16S rDNA, targeted, and untargeted metabolomics analyses showed that HT can be

Beer and its components show potential for reducing hepatic steatosis in rodent models through multiple mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate beer's anti-steatotic effects in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model of Metabolic dysfunction-Associated Liver Disease (MASLD) and to explore the underlying mechanisms. In the HFD group, steatosis was confirmed by altered blood parameters, weight gain, elevated liver lipid content, and histological changes. These markers were normalized in the HFD+beer group, reaching levels similar to the control (CTR) group. Protein carbonylation and lipid per

Recent reports demonstrate an association between distinct bacteria or bacteria-derived metabolites originating from the gut microbiome and the onset or progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This raises the opportunity to modulate the gut microbiome to prevent or treat CVD. To investigate whether intestinal microbiome modulation can prevent or treat CVD, this systematic literature review includes all randomized clinical trials on microbiome modulation and its effects on CVD risk published between August 2018 and August 2023. Within this review, we report the modulation of the gut microb
