The effect of shoe and floor characteristics on walking kinematics.

It is common sense that walking on sand poses challenges to postural control. However, there are no studies quantifying the kinematics of sand walking compared to other types of postural perturbations such as unstable shoes. The aim of the study was to investigate differences in walking kinematics during walking on solid ground, in unstable shoes and on unstable surfaces. Nineteen healthy young adults (23.5 ± 1.5 years) performed three different walking tasks: 1) walking at preferred speed while wearing regular shoes; 2) Walking at preferred speed wearing Masai Barefoot Technology shoes and 3)

[Factors associated with orthostatic hypotension in adults: the ELSA-Brasil study].

This study aimed to investigate factors associated with orthostatic hypotension in 14,833 individuals 35-74 years of age. This was a cross-sectional study of baseline data (2008-2010) from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Postural testing was performed after 20 minutes resting in supine position and active adoption of orthostatic posture. Blood pressure was measured in supine position and at 3 minutes in orthostatic position with an oscillometer (HEM 705 CP, Omron, São Paulo, Brazil). Orthostatic hypotension was defined as a drop of ≥ 20mmHg in systolic blood pressure and/…

Direction-Specific Instability Poststroke Is Associated With Deficient Motor Modules for Balance Control.

Defective muscle coordination for balance recovery may contribute to stroke survivors' propensity for falling. Thus, we investigated deficits in muscle coordination for postural control and their association to body sway following balance perturbations in people with stroke. Specifically, we compared the automatic postural responses of 8 leg and trunk muscles recorded bilaterally in unimpaired individuals and those with mild to moderate impairments after unilateral supratentorial lesions (>6 months). These responses were elicited by unexpected floor translations in 12 directions. We extracted

Evaluation of static and dynamic balance in athletes with anterior cruciate ligament injury - A controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: Anterior cruciate ligament injury leads to adaptive responses to maintain postural control. However, there is no consensus regarding whether leg dominance also affects postural control in athletes with anterior cruciate ligament injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate dynamic and static postural control among athletes with and without anterior cruciate ligament injury to the dominant leg. METHODS: Twenty-eight athletes, twenty-one males and seven females aged 15-45 years, were allocated to one of two groups: the anterior cruciate ligament injury group (26±3 years) or the

An evaluation of lateralizing signs in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Resective epilepsy surgery has been accepted as an effective treatment for patients with medically intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) to control the seizures and to limit cognitive dysfunction. Complete resection of the epileptic zone, and therefore the success of the surgery, depends on the identification of the seizure focus. Reliable lateralizing semiologic signs, together with other presurgical assessments, are of great importance for an accurate identification of the seizure focus. In this respect, this study evaluated the frequency of semiologic signs in medically intractable tempo

Neurovisceral phenotypes in the expression of psychiatric symptoms.

This review explores the proposal that vulnerability to psychological symptoms, particularly anxiety, originates in constitutional differences in the control of bodily state, exemplified by a set of conditions that include Joint Hypermobility, Postural Tachycardia Syndrome and Vasovagal Syncope. Research is revealing how brain-body mechanisms underlie individual differences in psychophysiological reactivity that can be important for predicting, stratifying and treating individuals with anxiety disorders and related conditions. One common constitutional difference is Joint Hypermobility, in whi

The distinctive vertical heterophoria of dyslexics.

In this study, we looked for the presence of vertical heterophoria (VH) in 42 dyslexic children (22 males and 20 females) aged 118.5±12.9 months who were compared with a control group of 22 nondyslexic children (eleven males and eleven females) aged 112±9.8 months. Dyslexics presented a low-level (always <1 prism diopter) VH combined with torsion. This oculomotor feature clearly separates the dyslexic group from the normal readers group. It is independent of the type of dyslexia. The essential feature of this VH is a lability that appears during specific stimulation of sensory receptors involv

The influence of ankle joint mobility when using an orthosis on stability in patients with spinal cord injury: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Perceived risk of falling is an important factor for people with spinal cord injury (SCI). This study investigated the influence of ankle joint motion on postural stability and walking in people with SCI when using an orthosis. METHODS: Volunteer subjects with SCI (n=5) participated in this study. Each subject was fitted with an advanced reciprocating gait orthosis (ARGO) equipped with either solid or dorsiflexion-assist type ankle-foot orthosis (AFOs) and walked at their self-selected speed along a flat walkway to enable the comparison of walking speed, cadence and endurance. Orthostatic intolerance and gastrointestinal motility in adolescents with nausea and abdominal pain.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationships between gastric emptying, autonomic function, and postural tachycardia in adolescent patients with nausea and/or abdominal discomfort. It was hypothesized that patients with both gastrointestinal symptoms and symptoms of orthostatic intolerance are more likely to show abnormal tilt table results and delayed gastric emptying. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of adolescent patients who came to a pediatric referral center because of nausea and dyspepsia and who subsequently underwent both autonomic reflex screening and gastric em

Wrapping of trunk thoracic extensor muscles influences muscle forces and spinal loads in lifting tasks.

BACKGROUND: An improved assessment of risk of spinal injury during lifting activities depends on an accurate estimation of trunk muscle forces, spinal loads and stability margin which in turn requires, amongst others, an accurate description of trunk muscle geometries. The lines of action of erector spinae muscles are often assumed to be linear despite the curved paths of these muscles in forward flexion postures. METHODS: A novel approach was introduced that allowed for the proper simulation of curved paths for global extensor muscles in our Kinematics-driven finite element model. The lever …

Effects of computer mouse design and task on carpal tunnel pressure.

Computer mouse use has become an integral part of office work in the past decade. Intensive mouse use has been associated with increased risk of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome. Sustained, elevated fluid pressure in the carpal tunnel may play a role in the pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel pressure was measured in 14 healthy individuals while they performed tasks using three different computer mice. Participants performed a multidirectional dragging ('drag and drop') task starting with the hand resting (static posture) on the m…

The effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on balance in healthy young and older adults: A systematic review of the literature.

Various studies have investigated the effect of noninvasive brain stimulation methods such as transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) on postural control in healthy young and older adults. However, the use of different treatment protocols and outcome measures makes it difficult to interpret the research results. This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of the current literature on the effect of tDCS on postural control. Nine databases were searched for papers assessing the effect of tDCS on postural control in young healthy and/or older adults. The data of included studies were

Functional Neuroanatomy of Vertical Visual Perception in Humans.

Vertical representation is central to posture control, as well as to spatial perception and navigation. This representation has been studied for a long time in patients with vestibular disorders and more recently in patients with hemispheric damage, in particular in those with right lesions causing spatial or postural deficits. The aim of the study was to determine the brain areas involved in the visual perception of the vertical. Sixteen right-handed healthy participants were evaluated using fMRI while they were judging the verticality of lines or, in a control task, the color of the same lin…
