Maltreatment, resilience, and sexual relationship power in a sample of justice-involved women with opioid use disorder.

Justice-involved women frequently report maltreatment and intimate relationships characterized by violence and abuse throughout adulthood. The present study aimed to (a) investigate the association between victimization and sexual relationship power (SRP) among justice-involved women with opioid use disorder (OUD) and (b) explore resilience as a potential moderating factor of the association between victimization and SRP. Under the ongoing Kentucky Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN) cooperative, justice-involved women (N = 700) were randomly selected from eight jails in Kentuc

Voices that matter: A community-driven intervention framework for Black women who have experienced traumatic loss.

Although Black women face disproportionately high rates of gun violence and incarceration loss, there is a scarcity of culturally relevant interventions for this population. The aims of this study were to (a) examine the need for a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and evidence-based grief intervention and to (b) identify key program components and considerations. Using a community-based participatory research framework, co-collaborators interviewed and surveyed 13 Black women who experienced gun violence and/or incarceration loss. Thematic analysis of interview data confirmed a need for

Assessing the impact of jail-initiated medication for opioid use disorder: A multisite analysis of the SOMATICS collaborative.

The objective of this study was to estimate the associations of jail-initiated medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and patient navigation (PN) with opioid use disorder (OUD) at 6 months post-release. Three randomized trials (combined N = 330) were combined to assess whether MOUD (extended-release naltrexone or interim methadone) initiated prior to release from jail with or without PN would reduce the likelihood of a DSM-5 diagnosis of OUD 6 months post-release relative to enhanced treatment-as-usual (ETAU). Across the three studies, assignment to MOUD compared to ETAU was not associated

Tattoo Removal in People of Color Who Were Formerly Incarcerated or Were Gang Members: Complications and Best Practices.

There are limited data about the tattoo removal process in formerly gang-involved and incarcerated people of color. This single center retrospective study was conducted on patients treated at Homeboy Industries' Ya'Stuvo Tattoo Removal Clinic between January 2016-December 2018. It reviewed data on 2,118 tattoos, and a representative sample of 502 patients was used to conduct our analysis. Treatment on 118 of the tattoos (5.57%) resulted in at least one complication (hypo-or hyper-pigmentation, keloids, or scarring). Patients who experienced tattoo removal complications (7.3%) were less likely

Previous Incarceration, Health Insurance, and the Affordable Care Act in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the association between prior incarceration and health insurance status and whether living in a state adopting the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion moderates this relationship. METHODS: Data are from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Wave I [1993-1994], Wave IV [2008], and Wave V [2016-2018]; N=8,965). Multiple logistic regression with multiplicative interaction terms were performed to assess the relationship between previous incarceration and ACA Medicaid expansion on (1) being insured and (2) being on public health i

A call to action: Contingency management to improve post-release treatment engagement among people with opioid use disorder who are incarcerated.

People with opioid use disorder (OUD) are overrepresented in US correctional facilities and experience disproportionately high risk for illicit opioid use and overdose after release. A growing number of correctional facilities offer medication for OUD (MOUD), which is effective in reducing these risks. However, a recent evaluation found that <50% of those prescribed MOUD during incarceration continued MOUD within 30 days after release, demonstrating a need to improve post-release continuity of care. We describe available evidence on contingency management (CM), an intervention wherein patients

Juvenile incarceration in an adult correctional facility as a risk factor for adolescent childrearing?

INTRODUCTION: Recent trends in reproductive rights have contributed to lasting concerns about adolescent childrearing in American society. Beyond being generally unprepared when raising a child, having a child during adolescence is associated with a variety of environmental, social, and psychological consequences for both the parents and the child. It is important to understand the factors contributing to adolescent childrearing. Although research has identified many factors that contribute to adolescent childrearing, a notable gap remains when considering the role of the correctional system a

Sociodemographic and Clinical Characteristics Associated With Recent Incarceration Among People With HIV, United States, 2015-2017.

OBJECTIVES: We examined sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral factors associated with previous incarceration among people with diagnosed HIV to inform HIV care efforts for this population. METHODS: We used 2015-2017 data from a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of US adults with diagnosed HIV (N = 11 739). We computed weighted percentages and 95% CIs to compare the characteristics of people with HIV incarcerated in the past 12 months (ie, recently) with people with HIV not recently incarcerated. We used adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) with predicted marginal means to ex

"I Said Maybe We Should Use a Condom, and Then that Just Went South": Exploring Condomless Sex among Formerly Incarcerated Black Men in New York City, USA.

More than 600,000 incarcerated individuals are released annually in the United States; a large proportion are Black men incarcerated for drug-related offenses, including drug use and possession. Formerly incarcerated Black men report elevated rates of condomless sex and sexually transmitted infections, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The purpose of this study was to explore condom usage among Black men who were formerly incarcerated for drug-related offenses and living in New York City (NYC). Using a semi-structured interview guide, in-depth interviews were conducted with 26 form

Observational study of continuity of HIV care following release from correctional facilities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: We sought to describe linkage to care, ART continuity, and factors associated with linkage to care among people with HIV following release from incarceration in South Africa. METHODS: We conducted a study of South African correctional service community reentrants who were receiving ART at the time of release. The study was implemented in three of 46 correctional service management areas. Participants were enrolled prior to corrections release and followed up to 90 days post-release to obtain self-reported linkage to care status and number of days of ART provided at corrections rel

Correlates of sexually transmitted infection testing following women's release from jail.

Given incarcerated women's frequent transitions between jail and community, it is important to seize opportunities to provide comprehensive health care. A potential time to provide care might be when getting tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Our objective was to determine the proportion of women receiving STI testing and correlates, following jail release. This secondary analysis was of one-year follow-up data from women who participated in a jail-based cervical health literacy intervention in three Kansas City jails from 2014 to 2016. Most (82%) completed the survey in the co

Medical nutrition therapy in Canadian federal correctional facilities.

BACKGROUND: Under- and over nutrition as well as nutrition risk factors such as communicable and non-communicable diseases are a common and major cause of morbidity and mortality in correctional facilities. Consequently, medical nutrition therapy (MNT), a spectrum of nutrition services aimed at optimizing individual well-being, is being recognized as integral to the health of people who experience incarceration. However, there is a paucity of research that explores the delivery of MNT in correctional facilities. METHODS: A scoping review combined with secondary analysis of qualitative data (f

Incarcerating Pregnant and Parenting Women, the New Witch Hunt: A Policy Analysis.

The mass incarceration of pregnant and parenting women is a serious problem in U.S. A policy focus is needed that takes a public health approach. This paper outlines the problems with health care delivery in correctional facilities. It is argued that correctional facilities are not the place for pregnant and parenting women. Alternative policies and programs are recommended that align with a public health approach and directly targets the pathways for imprisonment.

Externalizing Behavior Among Youth With a Current or Formerly Incarcerated Parent.

This study examined associations between parental incarceration and youths' externalizing behaviors (e.g., damage to property, fighting, theft, etc.). Data were drawn from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey, a statewide sample of 126,868 youth in public schools. Logistic regression analyses examined associations between youths' experience of parental incarceration and their self-reported externalizing behaviors, controlling for key demographic characteristics. Youth with a currently or formerly incarcerated parent reported significantly more externalizing behaviors compared with youth who never

Emotional demands and alcohol use in corrections: A moderated mediation model.

This study examined predictors of alcohol use (i.e., drinking quantity and frequency) in a sample of correctional officers (COs). More specifically, based on the idea of drinking to cope, we predicted an indirect effect of emotional demands at work on COs' drinking through employee burnout (i.e., exhaustion and disengagement). We further proposed that this indirect effect would be moderated by recovery experiences outside of work (i.e., psychological detachment and mastery). Participants were 1,039 COs from 14 state correctional facilities. Results indicate that emotional demands were positive

Ethical rationales for past and present military medical practices.

This paper reviews changes in the ethical challenges that have arisen in military medicine over the past four decades. This includes the degree, if any, to which providers during the Vietnam conflict have carried out what we now refer to as harsh interrogation measures in an attempt to extract information from captured enemy soldiers, the extent, if any, to which the USA used medicine as a means to try to win over the hearts and minds of civilians in occupied territory and how providers should treat service members who return from the front with combat fatigue. An issue that arose during the f
