IMPROVE-BMT: a protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial of prehabilitation exercise for adult haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.

IntroductionHaematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) in adults is an intensive medical procedure for a variety of haematological malignancies. Although there is a large body of evidence demonstrating the negative effects of HSCT on physical function and psychosocial parameters, there is limited evidence on the impact of HSCT on body composition and bone health. Further, aerobic and resistance-training exercise interventions aimed at improving physical function and patient-reported outcomes largely take place during the peritransplant and post-transplant period. Prehabilitative exercise, or e

Clinical characteristics of psychotic disorders in patients with childhood trauma.

Childhood trauma is an important predictor of psychotic disorders, with special emphasis on physical and sexual abuse. It influences the clinical picture and course of psychotic disorders. This study was conducted in the Department of Psychiatry of the University Clinical Hospital Mostar. The sample consisted of 135 participants, aged 18 to 65 years. The screening instrument to examine cognitive status was the short version of MMSE-2. Patients' background information was collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire constructed for this study. To determine childhood trauma, the Child Abuse

Mid-Childhood Outcomes after Dextrose Gel Treatment of Neonatal Hypoglycaemia: Follow-Up of the Sugar Babies Randomized Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dextrose gel is widely used as first-line treatment for neonatal hypoglycaemia given its cost-effectiveness and ease of use. The Sugar Babies randomized trial first showed that 40% dextrose gel was more effective in reversing hypoglycaemia than feeding alone. Follow-up of the Sugar Babies Trial cohort at 2 and 4.5 years of age reported that dextrose gel appeared safe, with similar rates of neurosensory impairment in babies randomized to dextrose or placebo gel. However, some effects of neonatal hypoglycaemia may not become apparent until school age. METHODS: Follow-up of the Sug

Naturalistic clinical and psychosocial outcome of incident cases of schizophrenia in Enugu Federal Psychiatric Hospital: A preliminary report at 4-month follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal outcome studies based on incident and predominantly neuroleptic-naïve cases of schizophrenia are uncommon in the modern literature. AIMS: To determine the proportion of persons with schizophrenia with different levels of clinical and functional outcome at monthly intervals of naturalistic treatment follow-up for 4 months: response, remission and recovery; and to examine the predictors of outcome. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Consecutive incident cases that fulfilled stringent criteria for schizophrenia were recruited into the study. After a baseline assessment, 160 incide

The Dutch Measure for quantification of Treatment Resistance in Depression (DM-TRD): an extension of the Maudsley Staging Method.

BACKGROUND: Treatment resistant depression (TRD) is common in daily practice. An empirical, widely accepted and applicable measure to quantify TRD is lacking. Previously, the Maudsley Staging Method (MSM) showed good validity. We aimed to improve the MSM by refining and extending its items resulting in the Dutch Measure for quantification of TRD (DM-TRD). METHODS: In addition to duration, severity and failed treatments in the current depressive episode, we added items for functional impairment, comorbid anxiety, personality disorders and psychosocial stressors. We extended the augmentation se

A cross-sectional study on clinical correlates of anxiety disorders in 613 community living older adults in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have reported that the prevalence of late life anxiety disorders varies between 3.2% and 15.3%. Despite its high prevalence, anxiety disorders are still under-recognized in old age. This study evaluated the association among health, psychosocial factors, lifestyle choices, cognitive function and anxiety disorders in the older population in Hong Kong. METHODS: Six hundred and thirteen volunteer participants aged 60 years or above were interviewed for their socio-demographic background, physical and mental health statuses, social network, cognitive function and thei

Clinical application of the FACES score for face transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically evaluate all reported outcomes of facial allotransplantation (FT) using the previously described FACES scoring instrument. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all consecutive face transplants to date (January 2012). Candidates were identified using medical and general internet database searches. Medical literature and media reports were reviewed for details regarding demographic, operative, anatomic, and psychosocial data, which were then used to formulate FACES scores. Pre-transplant and post-transplant scores for "functional status", "aes

Assessing physical and cognitive function of older adults in continuing care retirement communities: who are we recruiting?

PURPOSE: In partnership with six Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), the current study focused on the feasibility of recruiting a representative sample of residents and then assessing their functional health. MATERIAL AND METHODS: With our guidance, each of the six CCRCs recruited a volunteer (V-Group) and random (R-Group) sample of independent living residents. We provided face-to-face training and ongoing remote electronic support to the CCRC staff on the testing battery and the Web-based data entry system. The testing battery was consisted of demographic, physical function, and

Surviving cervical cancer: does health-related quality of life influence survival?

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the association between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes and survival status among a population-based cohort diagnosed with invasive cancer of the cervix uteri. METHODS: This study is based on data from 353 multiethnic cervical cancer survivors (CCS) recruited through the California Cancer Surveillance Program. The independent variable is HRQOL measured by the FACT-CX (FACT-G plus additional items) and the SF-12. The dependent variable is survival from date of the HRQOL survey. The role of sensory and cognitive function in the onset of activity restriction in older people.

BACKGROUND: Extending healthy active life expectancy is a priority if we are to achieve gains in both the quality and quantity of life lived at older ages. We investigated the role of sensory (vision and hearing) and cognitive function on the onset of activity restriction in older people. METHODS: A survey of a total population (N = 1579) of people aged 75 years and older, registered with a large general population in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England, was undertaken in 1988 and linked with subsequent routine health assessments (up to a maximum of five) over 10 years. [Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa: surgical treatment of advanced hand deformities].

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (Hallopeau-Siemens, recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa) is a rare inherited disorder of the skin and mucosa, characterized by blistering in response to the slightest mechanical trauma. Healing is associated with scarring and the formation of contractures and milia. Following repetitive trauma (friction), this process leads to severe hand deformities with digits contracted in flexion, the thumb contracted in adduction and pseudo-syndactyly. In advanced cases (as described here), the hands show a mitten-like deformity and digits are encased in an epiderma

LGBTQIA+ sexual health: a SITCC clinical framework for integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy and sexual medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) individuals experience significant sexual health disparities shaped by minority stress processes, trauma exposure, mental health burden, and historically heteronormative and cisnormative clinical frameworks. Although international guidelines, standards of care, and professional guidance documents increasingly endorse affirmative and evidence-informed care, their integration into routine sexual medicine and psychotherapeutic practice remains inconsistent, particularly in the assessment and clinical management of sexual dysfunctions in LGBTQIA+

Integrated Depression Care and Livelihood Interventions for Low-Income Women in Vietnam: Protocol for a Cluster Nonrandomized Controlled Trial (LIFE-DM).

BACKGROUND: In Vietnam, economically disadvantaged women face compounded risks due to gender inequality, financial instability, and limited access to mental health care. Community health stations (CHSs), the frontline entry point into the health system and the most accessible primary care facilities, typically lack trained mental health providers, further exacerbating an already existing treatment gap. While evidence-based treatments for depression exist, most interventions address either mental health or economic hardship separately, limiting their effectiveness in resource-constrained settin

Psychosocial Interventions, Recovery, and Mediating Mechanisms in Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Longitudinal Studies.

Background/Objectives: Recovery from schizophrenia-spectrum disorders is increasingly recognized as achievable, yet no synthesis has simultaneously examined long-term outcome rates, intervention effectiveness, cognitive predictors, social determinants, personal-recovery trajectories, and mediating mechanisms within a unified framework. This systematic review aimed to address these six domains and to propose an integrative theoretical model of functional recovery, applying meta-analysis where the evidence permitted and structured narrative synthesis elsewhere. Methods: Seven databases (PubMed/M

Performance on Cognitive Screening Tests and Long-Term Substance Use Outcomes in Patients with Polysubstance Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairments among patients with substance use disorders are prevalent and associated with adverse treatment outcomes. However, knowledge of the predictive value of broad cognitive screening instruments on long-term treatment outcomes is limited. The present study aimed to examine the predictive value of measures from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment® (MoCA®), Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI), and the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function - Adult version (BRIEF-A) on self-reported long-term substance use and abstinence in patients with polysu
