A novel approach of using Maca root as a radioprotector in a rat testicular damage model focusing on GRP78/CHOP/Caspase-3 pathway.

PURPOSE: Despite the effectiveness of ionizing radiation in treating cancer, it can damage healthy tissues in the vicinity. Due to the high radio-sensitivity of testicular tissues, radiation therapy may affect spermatogenesis, which may result in infertility. Hence, in this study testicular damage model is constructed to investigate the mitigation effect of Maca root powder and its potential radioprotective activity through both oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stresses, besides the apoptotic pathway. METHODS: Male albino rats were exposed to 6Gy of whole-body gamma radiation single d

The adenoid: Its history and a cautionary tale.

The existence of the adenoid first appears to have been noted by Conrad Victor Schneider in 1661. James Yearsley reported in 1842 one case in which he improved hearing by removal of a mucus membrane from behind the uvula, which indicates some appreciation of a relationship of the nasopharynx to ear disease. Hans Wilhelm Meyer, in 1868, was the first to demonstrate the relationship of the adenoid to ear disease and to develop an effective, although somewhat difficult, surgical operation to remove the adenoid. Removal of the adenoid became rapidly accepted worldwide as a treatment for many morbi

Accelerator-Based Tests of Shielding Effectiveness of Different Materials and Multilayers using High-Energy Light and Heavy Ions.

The roadmap for space exploration foresees longer journeys and further excursions outside low-Earth orbit as well as the establishment of permanent outposts on other celestial bodies, such as the Moon or Mars. The design of spacecrafts and habitats depends heavily on the mission scenario and must consider the radiation protection properties of the structural components as well as dedicated shielding. In fact, short- and long-term effects caused by exposure to cosmic radiation are now considered among the main health risks of space travel. One of the current strategies is to find multifunctiona

Organ doses from environmental exposures calculated using voxel phantoms of adults and children.

This paper presents effective and organ dose conversion coefficients for members of the public due to environmental external exposures, calculated using the ICRP adult male and female reference computational phantoms as well as voxel phantoms of a baby, two children and four adult individual phantoms--one male and three female, one of them pregnant. Dose conversion coefficients are given for source geometries representing environmental radiation exposures, i.e. whole body irradiations from a volume source in air, representing a radioactive cloud, a plane source in the ground at a depth of 0.5

Post-Chornobyl thyroid cancers in Ukraine. Report 1: estimation of thyroid doses.

About 1.8 EBq of 131I was released into the atmosphere during the Chornobyl accident that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986. More than 10% of this activity was deposited on the territory of Ukraine. Beginning 4-5 years after the accident, an increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer among children, believed to be caused in part by exposure to 131I, has been observed in different regions of Ukraine. A three-level system of thyroid dose estimation was developed for the reconstruction of thyroid doses from 131I for the entire population of Ukrainian children aged 1 to 18 at the time of acci

Reducing radiation dose from myocardial perfusion imaging in subjects with complex congenital heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of defects and effective radiation dose from various myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) strategies in congenital heart disease (CHD) is unknown. METHODS: We studied 75 subjects with complex CHD (ages 5 to 80 years) referred for MPI between 2002 and 2015. A rest and exercise or pharmacologic stress MPI was performed using 99mTechnetium sestamibi, 82rubidium or 13N-ammonia, and Sodium iodide SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography), SPECT/CT or Cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) SPECT or PET (positron emission tomography)/CT scanners. Protection against radiation-induced chromosome damage in mouse bone marrow by Ocimum sanctum.

The radioprotective effect of the leaf extract of Ocimum sanctum (Ocimum extract, OE) was investigated by taking chromosome aberrations as the end point. Adult Swiss mice were whole-body exposed to 1-6 Gy of gamma radiation with/without pretreatment with 10 mg/kg b.wt. of OE intraperitoneally for 5 consecutive days. Radiation was given 30 min after the last injection. Metaphase plates were prepared from femur marrow on days 1, 2, 7 and 14 post-treatment and the frequency of aberrant cells and individual aberrations were scored. OE alone did not have any significant effect on the chromosomes. M

Roles for basal and stimulated p21(Cip-1/WAF1/MDA6) expression and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling in radiation-induced cell cycle checkpoint control in carcinoma cells.

We investigated the role of the cdk inhibitor protein p21(Cip-1/WAF1/MDA6) (p21) in the ability of MAPK pathway inhibition to enhance radiation-induced apoptosis in A431 squamous carcinoma cells. In carcinoma cells, ionizing radiation (2 Gy) caused both primary (0-10 min) and secondary (90-240 min) activations of the MAPK pathway. Radiation induced p21 protein expression in A431 cells within 6 h via secondary activation of the MAPK pathway. Within 6 h, radiation weakly enhanced the proportion of cells in G(1) that were p21 and MAPK dependent, whereas the elevation of cells present in G(2)/M at

Latest findings in chemotherapy.

Radiotherapy and surgery are the two pivotal curative treatments for cervical cancer. Although cervical cancer is relatively sensitive to chemotherapy, chemotherapy is not included in the curative treatment of cervical cancer and has a role in limited medical conditions. Chemotherapy used to treat cervical cancer can be divided into four categories: (1) preceding chemotherapy (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to augment the effects of radical therapy (surgery or radiation therapy), (2) chemotherapy administered concurrently with radiation therapy, and (3) adjuvant chemotherapy administered after radi

[Review of Cohort Studies Among Radiologists, Radiological Technologists, and Nuclear Workers].

A number of epidemiological studies have been conducted to investigate the health effects of low-dose radiation. The author reviewed epidemiological studies among radiologists, radiological technologists, and nuclear workers. Because the results of many epidemiological studies on these subjects have been published, and many studies have measured radiation doses, there is little uncertainty. In the studies among radiologists and radiological technologists, high risks for leukemia, skin cancer, and breast cancer were found in populations that began work before around 1950, but not seen such a te

Tissue thickness estimation for high precision head-tracking using a galvanometric laser scanner - a case study.

Marker-less optical head-tracking constitutes a comfortable alternative with no exposure to radiation for realtime monitoring in radiation therapy. Supporting information such as tissue thickness has the potential to improve spatial tracking accuracy. Here we study how accurate tissue thickness can be estimated from the near-infrared (NIR) backscatter obtained from laser scans. In a case study, optical data was recorded with a galvanometric laser scanner from three subjects. A tissue ground truth from MRI was robustly matched via customized bite blocks. We show that Gaussian Processes accurate

Safety in pediatric imaging: an update.

Many assumptions are made when imaging children. In particular a judgement is made regarding how safe or unsafe each imaging modality is, using relatively arbitrary definitions and distinctions, due to the lack of robust scientific data. Here, the latest evidence is reviewed, particularly regarding the medical exposure to ionizing radiation (X-rays and CT) and MRI in childhood. The best evidence currently available suggests a small but convincing risk of cumulative low-dose ionizing radiation in children. Given our predictions for the children imaged today, it seems reasonable to pursue non-io

Radiation-modified natural zeolites for cleaning liquid nuclear waste (irradiation against radioactivity).

There have been comparatively few investigations reported of radiation effects in zeolites, although it is known that these materials may be modified substantially by exposure to ionizing radiation. Thus, by exposure to γ-rays or high-energy particles, the charge states of atoms may be changed so to create, and accumulate, lattice point defects, and to form structurally disordered regions. Such a technique may permit the creation, in a controlled fashion, of additionally useful properties of the material while preserving its essential stoichiometry and structure. Accordingly, we present an app…

Iatrogenic effects of photoprotection recommendations on skin cancer development, vitamin D levels, and general health.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is an established carcinogen that causes skin cancers and other cutaneous photodamage. Vitamin D is produced in the skin after UV exposure and may also be obtained from dietary and supplemental sources. The effect of recommendations for UV protection, as well as for very large vitamin D supplements, and possible adverse effects of both are explored. Current evidence supports the conclusion that protection from UV radiation reduces the incidence of skin cancers and photodamage, but generally does not compromise vitamin D status or lead to iatrogenic disease. Conversel

The interaction of UVA and UVB wavebands with particular emphasis on signalling.

The molecular response mechanisms and signalling pathways activated upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation have been extensively studied within the last two decades. Although many signalling pathways can be activated by both UVA as well as UVB, there are several distinctions indicating wavelength-specific response patterns accommodated by the terms UVA response and UVB response. Given that human skin is primarily exposed to UV light from solar radiation consisting of both UVA and UVB, we sought to explore a potential interaction between the distinct UVA and UVB responses at the level of M

[Ultraviolet A-I phototherapy for skin diseases].

Favourable effects of sunlight on various skin diseases include inhibition of rapid proliferation of cells (psoriasis), modulation of cells in an inflammatory infiltrate (atopic eczema) and stimulation of proteolytic enzymes (scleroderma). The ultraviolet (UV) fraction of the solar spectrum is the most biologically active because it is almost completely absorbed by the skin. UVB and the combination of psoralens with UVA (PUVA) have become important therapeutic modalities, especially for psoriasis and eczema. Lamps producing long wave UV radiation are available: UVA-I light. Owing to its longer

Evidence that lack of deoxyribonucleic acid repair causes death of neurons in xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an autosomal recessive disorder with hypersensitivity to the lethal effects of ultraviolet radiation caused by inherited defects in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair processes. Some patients with XP develop a primary neuronal degeneration which has been thought to result from unrepaired damage in neuronal DNA. Five years ago we reported that cultured skin fibroblasts from a 12-year-old girl with XP, who then had only one major neurological abnormality of the disease, had a sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation intermediate between that of XP patients with numerous

Thyroid carcinoma.

Differentiated thyroid carcinoma was studied with regard to mode of presentation, initial findings, treatment and survival. The classic signs, symptoms, physical and scan findings were found to be present in approximately 70% of the patients. Thirty percent of the patients had either unusual presentations or findings. Prognosis was found to be dependent on age of presentation more than any other factor. The effects of neck metastasis, extracapsular invasion and recurrent laryngeal nerve involvement on long-term survival are studied in detail. patients with prior exposure to radiation were foun
