Recruitment gain of spinal motor neuron pools in cat and human.

The output from a motor nucleus is determined by the synaptic input to the motor neurons and their intrinsic properties. Here, we explore whether the source of synaptic inputs to the motor neurons (cats) and the age or post-stroke conditions (humans) may change the recruitment gain of the motor neuron pool. In cats, the size of Ia EPSPs in triceps surae motor neurons (input) and monosynaptic reflexes (MSRs; output) was recorded in the soleus and medial gastrocnemius motor nerves following graded stimulation of dorsal roots. The MSR was plotted against the EPSP thereby obtaining a measure of th…

Indian red scorpion venom depresses spinal synaptic transmission without involving NMDA receptors.

Stings of Indian red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus, MBT) produce neurological abnormalities such as convulsions and paralysis. These parameters indicate the activity at alpha-motoneuron. The present study was therefore, undertaken to evaluate the effect of MBT-venom on spinal reflexes and the involvement of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. The experiments were performed on isolated hemisected spinal cords from 4 to 6 days old rats. Stimulation of a dorsal root with supramaximal strength at 0.1Hz evoked monosynaptic (MSR) and polysynaptic reflex (PSR) potentials in the corresponding segmen…

Examination of spasticity of the knee flexors and knee extensors using isokinetic dynamometry with electromyography and clinical scales in children with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of reflex activity in spasticity and the relationship between peak passive torque, Ashworth Scale (AS), and Spasm Frequency Scale (SFS) of the knee flexors and extensors during the measurement of spasticity using an isokinetic dynamometer in children with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: Eighteen children with chronic SCI and 10 children of typical development (TD) participated. One set of 10 passive movements was completed using an isokinetic dynamometer at 15, 90, and 180 degrees per second (deg/s) while surface electromyographic data were collect…

Spasticity in rats with sacral spinal cord injury.

We have investigated sacral spinal cord lesions in rats with the goal of developing a rat model of muscular spasticity that is minimally disruptive, not interfering with bladder, bowel, or hindlimb locomotor function. Spinal transections were made at the S2 sacral level and, thus, only affected the tail musculature. After spinal transection, the muscles of the tail were inactive for 2 weeks. Following this initial period, hypertonia, hyperreflexia, and clonus developed in the tail, and grew more pronounced with time. These changes were assessed in the awake rat, since the tail is readily acces…

[Cardiovascular and hemodynamic changes after artificial pulmonary ventilation].

The cardio-respiratory interactions include mechanical, reflex and humoral mechanisms. However, in the organism they mutually overlap, thus mating their separate investigation is problematic. Mechanical effects of conventional artificial ventilation (AV) and high frequency ventilation (HFV) are elicited by increased intrapulmonary pressure during lung inflation, as well as during application of positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP). The increase in intrapulmonary pressure compresses the pulmonary vessels and increases the pulmonary vascular resistance. These changes deteriorate the right ven…

The temporary inactivation of the red nucleus affects performance of both conditioned and unconditioned nictitating membrane responses in the rabbit.

These experiments are part of a series of studies examining the role of the red nucleus in the performance of the conditioned and unconditioned nictitating membrane reflexes in the rabbit. Specifically, the experiments test the hypothesis that the temporary inactivation of the red nucleus selectively affects the performance of the conditioned reflex. The experiments were designed to assess the effects of lidocaine and control saline microinjections on conditioned as well as unconditioned responses in both paired and unpaired trials. Rabbits were chronically implanted with cannulae through whic…

Improving muscle recruitment via multi-electrode transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation using automated selectivity-driven algorithms.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) severely impairs motor function and quality of life. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has emerged as a … to enhance the selectivity of tSCS in multi-electrode configurations and to implement online spinal reflex detection and automated algorithms for personalizing stimulation parameters, enabling selective activation of target muscle groups. We propose an automated protocol with online spinal reflex detection and muscle response analysis and developed two a …

[Unusual supravital muscle reaction of the upper limbs caused by an attempt to obtain an idiomuscular tumor].

The article shows the role of long-lasting postmortem spinal reflexes' potential in rigor mortis development on an example of fatal railway injury. Strokes with metal rod on both biceps caused a spinal reflex (forearms' flexion in elbow joints and fingers) instead of an idiomuscular tumor with simultaneous development of a pronounced rigor mortis of the upper limbs on the decapitated corpse of a 20-year-old woman 7.25 h after death.

Identification of an oculomotor biomarker of preclinical Huntington disease.

The authors examined oculomotor function to identify a biomarker of disease progression in genetically confirmed preclinical and early clinical Huntington disease (HD). Initiation deficits of voluntary-guided, but not reflexive, saccades were characteristic of preclinical HD. Saccadic slowing and delayed reflexive saccades were demonstrated in clinical but not preclinical HD. Saccadic measures provide biomarkers of disease progression in both preclinical and early clinical stages of HD.

[Acute abdomen masking pyelonephritis (author's transl)].

Analysis of 10 case histories shows that the picture of the acute abdomen may predominate in acutely exacerbated pyelonephritis. Viscero-dermal reflexes with hyperalgesia and muscular defense, visero-visceral organ reflexes with shock, vomiting, meteorism and disturbances of intestinal motility and metabolic acidosis are temptations to laparotomy. Fever in particular, pathological urinalysis, renal acidosis and occasionally hyperchloremia suggest the diagnosis of "abdominal type of acutely exacerbated pyelonephritis".

Nomenclature of neurogenic bladder.

Vesicourethral physiology is reviewed briefly in the light of recent developments. The effect on bladder function of central nervous system disorders is considered and attention is drawn to the desirability of diverting interest from the bladder to the urethra in neuropathic cases. It is concluded that there are only two basic types of neuropathic bladder function--in lesions of and above the sacral reflex pathways, respectively. Neurologically these are classified according to the condition of the anal and bulbocavernosus reflexes and the ice water test.

The diversity of neuroimmune circuits controlling lung inflammation.

It is becoming increasingly appreciated that the nervous and immune systems communicate bidirectionally to regulate immunological outcomes in a variety of organs including the lung. Activation of neuronal signaling can be induced by inflammation, tissue damage, or pathogens to evoke or reduce immune cell activation in what has been termed a neuroimmune reflex. In the periphery, these reflexes include the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, sympathetic reflex, and sensory nociceptor-immune cell pathways. Continual advances in neuroimmunology in peripheral organ systems have fueled small-scal…

Euthanasia: Manual versus Mechanical Cervical Dislocation for Broilers.

The aim was to assess the onset of brain stem death for two euthanasia methods-manual cervical dislocation (CD) versus the Koechner Euthanizing Device (KED). Over three days broilers of 36 (n = 60), 42 (n = 80), or 43 days old (n = 60) were euthanized. On days 2 and 3, a treatment was added in which the bird's head was extended at a ~90° angle after application of the KED (KED+). On those days, gap size was recorded between the skull and atlas vertebra by 1-cm increments. The onset of brain death was assessed by recording the nictitating membrane reflex, gasping reflex and musculoskeletal move…

Application of the Rat Grimace Scale as a Marker of Supraspinal Pain Sensation after Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Experimental models of neuropathic pain (NP) typically rely on withdrawal responses to assess the presence of pain. Reflexive withdrawal responses to a stimulus are used to evaluate evoked pain and, as such, do not include the assessment of spontaneous NP nor evaluation of the affective and emotional consequences of pain in animal models. Additionally, withdrawal responses can be mediated by spinal cord reflexes and may not accurately indicate supraspinal pain sensation. This is especially true in models of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), wherein spastic syndrome, a motor disorder characte…

Contributors to excess antagonist activity during movement in children with secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy.

Children with secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy exhibit abnormal upper extremity postures and slow voluntary movement. However, the interaction between abnormal postures and abnormal movement in dystonia is still unclear. Some mechanisms by which postures are maintained in dystonia include stretch reflexes, overflow of muscle activation to other muscles, and direct coactivation of antagonist muscles. This study explored the independent contributions of each of these postural mechanisms to abnormal biceps brachii (antagonist) activity during elbow extension, which slows movement. A linea…

Fast responses to stepping on an unexpected surface height depend on intact large-diameter nerve fibers: a study on Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A disease.

The contribution of reflexes from the large myelinated afferents in the control of normal and perturbed gait in humans is a highly debated issue. One way to investigate this topic is by studying normal and perturbed gait in patients lacking large myelinated fibers in the distal limb (Charcot-Marie-Tooth [CMT] type 1A disease). Such patients should have delayed and decreased reflexes if the latter depend on these large myelinated fibers. To elicit the reflexes, both patients and controls had to step on a platform that was either at the same level or lowered by 5 cm. In control subjects, landing…

The role of the nervous system in rhinitis.

The nose provides defensive and homeostatic functions requiring rapid responses to physical and chemical stimuli. As a result, it is armed with a complex nervous system that includes sensory, parasympathetic, and sympathetic nerves. Sensory nerves transmit signals from the mucosa, generating sensations, such as pruritus; motor reflexes, such as sneezing; and parasympathetic and sympathetic reflexes that affect the glandular and vascular nasal apparatuses. Reflexes directed to the nose are also generated by inputs from other body regions. Hence all symptoms that constitute the nosologic entity …

Trigeminal and carotid body inputs controlling vascular resistance in muscle during post-contraction hyperaemia in cats.

1. In anaesthetized cats, the effects of stimulation of the receptors in the nasal mucosa and carotid body chemoreceptors on vascular resistance in hindlimb skeletal muscle were studied to see whether the responses were the same in active as in resting muscle. The measurements of vascular resistance were taken, first, in resting muscle, and second, in the immediate post-contraction hyperaemic phase that followed a 30 s period of isometric contractions. 2. Stimulation of the receptors in the nasal mucosa caused reflex apnoea and vasoconstriction in muscle. The latter response was attenuated whe…
