Virtual Reality Learning in Suprapubic Catheter Insertion: The Role of Peer-Tutor Guidance Versus Teacher.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) training requires the incorporation of teaching resources into the medical curriculum. This study aimed to explore whether a peer tutor would have an equal effect on learning as a clinical teacher. APPROACH: Medical students at the University of Eastern Finland were invited to take part in a voluntary exercise. The exercise used the VR4HEALTHCARE software with OCULUS Rift S glasses to practice inserting a suprapubic catheter. A peer tutor or clinical teacher assisted the students with the system and content. Students were advised to rate their knowledge and pr

Effects of a Cognitive-Behavioral Group Counseling Program on Weight Bias Internalization and Psychological Outcomes Among Obese Youth in Mahasarakham University, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Weight bias internalization (WBI) is a serious challenge because of its negative impact on psychological consequences. Although the cognitive-behavioral intervention has been applied to reduce WBI, little is known about its effectiveness among Thai obese youth. Thus, this study sought to determine the effects of a cognitive-behavioral group counseling (CBGC) program on WBI and psychological outcomes in obese youths. Study Design: A randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Eighty obese youths were randomly allocated to two intervention (n=40) and control (n=40) groups. The interventio

Dscam1 Has Diverse Neuron Type-Specific Functions in the Developing Drosophila CNS.

Two key features endow Drosophila Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule 1 (Dscam1) with the potential to provide a ubiquitous code for neuronal arbor self-avoidance. First, Dscam1 contains three large cassettes of alternative exons, so that stochastic alternative splicing yields 19,008 Dscam1 isoforms with different Ig ectodomains. Second, each neuron expresses a different subset of Dscam1 isoforms, and isoform-specific homophilic binding causes repulsion. This results in even spacing of self-arbors, while processes of other neurons can intermingle and share the same synaptic partners. In princ

Is Violence, Violence no Matter Where it Strikes? Adjudicated Boys, Thwarted Belongingness, Perceived Burdensomeness, and Acquired Capability for Suicide.

This study explores treating violence against others as a precursor to self-directed violence. It tests the utility of including violence against others in the measure of acquired capability to test assumptions from the interpersonal theory of violence. Four theoretical hypotheses are assessed that are consistent with the theory: (1) thwarted belongingness (parental abandonment and rejection) and perceived burdensomeness (exposure to parental interpersonal violence and child abuse) independently increase the likelihood of suicidal ideation; (2) the interaction of thwarted belongingness and per

Chemosensory Dysfunctions Induced by COVID-19 Can Persist up to 7 Months: A Study of Over 700 Healthcare Workers.

Several studies have revealed either self-reported chemosensory alterations in large groups or objective quantified chemosensory impairments in smaller populations of patients diagnosed with COVID-19. However, due to the great variability in published results regarding COVID-19-induced chemosensory impairments and their follow-up, prognosis for chemosensory functions in patients with such complaints remains unclear. Our objective is to describe the various chemosensory alterations associated with COVID-19 and their prevalence and evolution after infection. A cross-sectional study of 704 health

Maternal Consistency in Recalling Prenatal Experiences at 6 Months and 8 Years Postnatal.

OBJECTIVE: Mothers are known to be reliable reporters of smoking during pregnancy, type of delivery, and birth weight when compared with medical records. Few studies have considered whether the timing of retrospective collection affects the mother's retrospective self-report. We examined the consistency of maternal retrospective recall of prenatal experiences, behaviors, and basic birth outcomes between 6 months and 8 years postpartum. METHOD: We examined 117 mothers (62% White, 44% living in a committed relationship, median high school education) from the Early Growth and Development Study (

A polygenic score for age-at-first-birth predicts disinhibition.

BACKGROUND: A recent genome-wide association study identified molecular-genetic associations with age-at-first-birth. However, the meaning of these genetic discoveries is unclear. Drawing on evidence linking early pregnancy with disinhibitory behavior, we tested the hypothesis that genetic discoveries for age-at-first-birth predict disinhibition. METHODS: We included participants with genotype data from the two-decade-long Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Study (N = 1,999) and the four-decade-long Dunedin Study (N = 918). We calculated a genome-wide polygenic score for age-at-first-birth and teste

Diurnal variation of human tear meniscus volume measured with tear strip meniscometry self-examination.

PURPOSE: Tear secretion is critical for maintenance of healthy ocular surface and vision. Most of normal subjects and dry eye patients feel worsening of ocular dryness in the afternoon, however, diurnal variation of tear meniscus volume has not been directly measured because there was no appropriate method. We used a simple, non-invasive technique, tear strip meniscometry (SM) by self-examination. Previous investigations indicated the values of SM correlated strongly with those of the Schirmer test, tests of tear break up time, and tear meniscus height measurement by anterior optical coherence

Temporomandibular pain in adolescents with a history of preterm birth.

AIM: To evaluate the frequency of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain among adolescents with a history of preterm birth compared to a matched control group. METHODS: A group of 192 preterm-born adolescents was followed up at the age of 17-19 years and compared to matched controls. Self-report questionnaires included screening questions about TMD pain, chronic diseases, general health, depression, anxiety, anger, antisocial behaviour and self-concept. TMD pain was defined as answering "yes" to one or both of the following questions: "Do you have pain in the temple, face, temporomandibular jo

Impact of frontal neurobehavioral symptoms on employment in individuals with TBI.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the contribution of frontal systems behavioral dysfunction on employment outcomes in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), in the context of relevant predictors of work status. METHOD: Forty-two participants with history of moderate-to-severe TBI were classified as either "Employed" or "Unemployed." Groups did not differ on most demographic or injury variables, although the Unemployed sample reported greater symptoms of depression, pain, and fatigue (ps < 0.05). Participants completed a neuropsychological evaluation emphasizing frontal systems and Frontal System

Does executive functioning (EF) predict depression in clinic-referred adults? EF tests vs. rating scales.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in executive functioning (EF) are implicated in neurobiological and cognitive-processing theories of depression. EF deficits are also associated with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults, who are also at increased risk for depressive disorders. Given debate about the ecological validity of laboratory measures of EF, we investigated the relationship between depression diagnoses and symptoms and EF as measured by both rating scales and tests in a sample of adults referred for evaluation of adult ADHD. METHOD: Data from two groups of adults recruited fro

Growth mindset and adolescent exercise persistence: a moderated serial mediation model through self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation.

Adolescence is the period in which physical-activity habits either take root or quietly unravel, and in China crowded timetables and examination pressure make the second outcome unusually common. What separates the adolescents who keep exercising from those who drift away is therefore a question with real public-health stakes, and beliefs about whether athletic ability can be developed offer one promising but under-tested answer. Drawing on social cognitive theory and self-determination theory, we specified a moderated serial mediation model and examined it in 860 adolescents aged 12 to 18, sa

Self-supervised 3D deep learning on preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography for predicting high pathologic nodal burden in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: temporal and external multicohort validation.

BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative identification of high nodal burden (pathologic N2 or N3; hereafter N2+) is important in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, but contrast-enhanced computed tomography criteria based mainly on nodal size and morphology have limited sensitivity. METHODS: In this retrospective multicohort study, 1,060 consecutive patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography and curative-intent esophagectomy with lymphadenectomy were enrolled from two centers. Center A contributed a development cohort (n = 612;

Acoustic spectral feedback in vocal learning: a systematic review of psychological mechanisms and skill outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Vocal skill acquisition is inherently "invisible": learners cannot directly observe the movements of their vocal organs, so traditional instruction depends heavily on the teacher's auditory judgment and metaphorical language. This leaves learners ill-equipped to detect errors and self-correct during independent practice. Spectral and acoustic visualization technologies-pitch-trajectory displays, spectrograms, formant analysis, and physiological biofeedback-can externalize this hidden process, yet systematic synthesis at the level of psychological mechanisms remains scarce. Constipation as a Hidden Barrier to Pelvic Floor Tele-Rehabilitation: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Women with Stress Urinary Incontinence.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: To investigate whether integrating constipation management into tele-supervised pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) improves continence outcomes compared with PFMT alone, and to determine whether constipation, pelvic floor self-efficacy, body awareness, and adherence predict treatment response. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 200 women aged 18-60 years with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) were randomized to group A (tele-supervised PFMT only) or group B (PFMT plus constipation management). All participants completed a 12-week live Zoom®-based PFMT

Impact of moulage-based simulation on nursing students' recognition of physical violence: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Violence against women is a global public health and human rights issue with profound physical and psychological consequences. Simulation-based learning may help nursing students recognize signs of violence. This study examined whether physical violence indicators created on a standardized patient using moulage improve nursing students' recognition of violence and their related attitudes, knowledge, satisfaction, self-efficacy, and communication skills. METHODS: A randomized controlled pretest-posttest design was conducted with 55 fourth-year nursing students allocated to a moulag

Aerobic fitness predicted by demographics, anthropometrics, health behaviour, physical activity and muscle fitness in male and female recruits entering military service.

INTRODUCTION: The physical and mental training load can be high during military service. Therefore, tailored preconditioning programmes based on assessment of physical fitness could increase readiness for military service, especially among those ones with lower baseline fitness level. The purpose of present study was to investigate how self-assessed health behaviour, physical activity and muscle fitness can predict physical fitness in young male and female military cohorts. METHODS: Demographics, health behaviour and daily physical activity preceding military service were surveyed by a questi

Immediate effects of hip strap and foot orthoses on self-reported measures and lower limb kinematics during functional tasks in individuals with patellofemoral osteoarthritis: protocol for a randomised crossover clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Elevated patellofemoral joint stress has been associated with patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA). Changes in lower limb kinematics, such as excessive femoral adduction and internal rotation and excessive rearfoot eversion during the stance phase of functional activities, may increase patellofemoral stress. There is a lack of studies that assess the effects of interventions for controlling femur and subtalar joint movements during functional activities on self-reported measures in individuals with PFOA. Thus, the primary aim of the study is to determine the immediate effects of th

A self-training program for sensory substitution devices.

Sensory Substitution Devices (SSDs) convey visual information through audition or touch, targeting blind and visually impaired individuals. One bottleneck towards adopting SSDs in everyday life by blind users, is the constant dependency on sighted instructors throughout the learning process. Here, we present a proof-of-concept for the efficacy of an online self-training program developed for learning the basics of the EyeMusic visual-to-auditory SSD tested on sighted blindfolded participants. Additionally, aiming to identify the best training strategy to be later re-adapted for the blind, we c

Relationships between upper-limb functional limitation and self-reported disability 3 months after stroke.

This study explored relationships between upper-limb (UL) functional limitations and self-reported disability in stroke patients with relatively pure motor hemiparesis who were enrolled in an acute rehabilitation treatment trial. All participants were enrolled in the VECTORS (Very Early Constraint Treatment for Recovery from Stroke) study. VECTORS is a single-center pilot clinical trial of early application of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT). All 39 subjects who completed 90 days of VECTORS were included in this analysis.
