Combined volar and dorsal plating vs. volar plating of distal radius fractures. A single-center study of 105 cases.

Despite recent advances in the surgical management of distal radius fractures (DRFs), the optimal treatment remains controversial as different fixation methods often have similar clinical functional and radiographic outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess the differences in outcomes 1 year postoperatively between volar plating and combined plating for DRFs. In a retrospective cohort study, we evaluated 105 consecutive patients operated with either a volar locking plate or combined dorsal and volar plating. The primary outcome was wrist range of motion (ROM). Secondary outcome measu

Four-corner fusion method using a bioabsorbable plate for scapholunate advanced collapse and scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse wrists: a case series study.

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid excision and four-corner arthrodesis is an acceptable salvage procedure for the treatment of scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC) and scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse (SNAC) wrists, since first popularized in the 1980s. We investigated the potential application of novel bioabsorbable plates and screws made of un-sintered hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide composite for the treatment of metacarpal fractures. We used this material for the fixation of four-corner fusions for SLAC or SNAC wrists commencing from April 2009. The purpose of this study was to clarify the controvers

Anterior Shoulder Instability Management: Indications, Techniques, and Outcomes.

Anterior shoulder instability is common in young athletes. Male individuals younger than 20 years who are involved in contact sports are at particular risk of injury and recurrence. Essential imaging includes radiography and magnetic resonance imaging in all patients, with 3-dimensional computed tomography being helpful to evaluate glenoid bone loss and Hill-Sachs lesions. Evaluation of the glenoid track is essential to help determine appropriate treatment because off-track scenarios in which the Hill-Sachs width is greater than the glenoid width impart a risk of failure with isolated arthrosc

Structural validity of the Dutch version of the disability of arm, shoulder and hand questionnaire (DASH-DLV) in adult patients with hand and wrist injuries.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the hand and wrist are one of the most common injuries seen in adults. The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire has been developed as a patient-reported assessment of pain and disability to evaluate the outcome after hand and wrist injuries. Patient reported outcomes (PROs) can be interpreted as pain, function or patient satisfaction. To be able to interpret clinical relevance of a PRO, the structural validity and internal consistency is tested. The Dutch version of the DASH has not yet been validated. The aim of this study was to evaluate th

A systematic review of outcomes and complications of treating unstable distal radius fractures in the elderly.

PURPOSE: As the population in developed countries continues to age, the incidence of osteoporotic distal radius fractures (DRFs) will increase as well. Treatment of DRF in the elderly population is controversial. We systematically reviewed the existing literature for the management of DRFs in patients aged 60 and over with 5 common techniques: the volar locking plate system, nonbridging external fixation, bridging external fixation, percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation, and cast immobilization (CI). METHODS: We reviewed articles retrieved from MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL Plus that met predete

Musculoskeletal injuries in break-dancers.

BACKGROUND: Since no epidemiologic studies have been reported about musculoskeletal injuries in break-dancers, there are no data on the rates and patterns of musculoskeletal injuries in this population that clinicians can use to find ways to decrease injury rate. HYPOTHESIS: We believe that the incidence of injuries in break-dancers is higher than assumed and that injury rates and patterns differ between professional and amateur dancers. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiologic study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of a total of 42 study subjects, 23 were professional dancers and 19 were amateur dan

Pattern of injury after rock-climbing falls is not determined by harness type.

OBJECTIVE: Experimental data indicate that when using a sit harness alone, any major fall during rock climbing may cause life-threatening thoraco-lumbar hyperextension trauma or "head down position" during suspension. To clarify the actual influence of the type of harness on the pattern and severity of injury, accidents involving a major fall in a climbing harness were analyzed retrospectively. METHODS: Individuals with a height of fall equal to or exceeding 5 m were identified through a search of accident and emergency records for the period from 2000 to 2004. Data concerning the circumstanc

Injuries in Australian Army recruits. Part II: Location and cause of injuries seen in recruits.

Three hundred fifty male recruits were randomly allocated to either the standard recruit training program (N = 180) or substituted a weighted-march activity for all formal run periods (N = 170) in the physical training program. All injuries were seen at a single medical facility, and the cause, location, and severity of injury were recorded in the medical documents. Lower-limb injuries constituted 79.8% of all Run injuries and 61.1% of all Walk injuries. Foot (18.9%), knee (16.7%), ankle (13.3%), and shoulder (8.9%) were the most common sites of injury in the Walk group. In the Run group, the

[Gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase in chronic polyarthritis. I. Comparison with a control group and relationship with alkaline phosphatase].

Gamma-GT, alcaline phosphatase and other parameters of abnormal liver functions were estimated in 54 consecutive in-patients having active RA but without a previous history or clinical signs of liver disease, and compared with a matched control group, suffering from degenerative rheumatic disease. There was a slight to moderate elevation of gamma-GT in 40.4% of the RA-patients (mean value 27.2 IU/l) and in 32.1% (mean value 22.3 IU/l) of the control group, respectively. The difference was not significant. Abnormal values in the control group occurred mainly in patients with peri-arthropathia o

Paediatric Sternoclavicular Joint Pseudodislocation Fixation Technique.

BACKGROUND: Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) injuries in children are rare and frequently misdiagnosed. Due to the anatomy of the immature medial clavicle, many of these injuries are Salter-Harris type I/II physeal fractures rather than true joint dislocations-termed pseudodislocations. These injuries require careful diagnosis and tailored management to ensure safe and functional outcomes. INDICATIONS: Surgical intervention is indicated in paediatric SCJ pseudodislocations with significant posterior displacement of the medial clavicular fragment, particularly when the posterior metaphys

Detection and evaluation of signals for immune-related adverse events: a nationwide, population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are one of the main pillars of cancer therapy. Since other studies such as clinical trial and retrospective study have limitations for detecting the immune-related adverse events (irAEs) characterized by unpredictable onset, nonspecific symptoms and wide clinical spectrum, we aimed to identify the incidence of irAEs and to detect and evaluate the signals using real-world data. METHODS: Cancer patients treated with anticancer medications were analyzed using the nationwide health insurance claims database of South Korea from 2017 to 2019, and Clin

Biomechanical Analysis of All-Suture Suture Anchor Fixation Compared With Conventional Suture Anchors and Interference Screws for Biceps Tenodesis.

PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical properties of all-suture suture anchors (ASSAs) with conventional interference screws (CISs) and conventional suture anchors (CSAs) for long head of the biceps tendon fixation during proximal biceps tenodesis (BT). METHODS: We randomized 21 fresh-frozen human cadaveric shoulders into 3 subpectoral BT treatment groups: ASSA, CSA, and CIS. Each construct was cyclically loaded from 5 to 70 N for 500 cycles (1 Hz). All specimens that survived cyclic loading were then pulled to failure (1 mm/s). Elongation, maximum load, energy, and failure mode were recorded.

The Impact of Complex Oral Rehabilitation on TMJ and Postural Alterations in Patients with Scapulohumeral Fractures.

Background and Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are prevalent conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint and associated musculature, arising from a complex interplay of biomechanical, neuromuscular, and psychosocial factors. Increasing evidence supports functional interconnections among the TMJ, cervical spine, and shoulder girdle, suggesting that dysfunction in one region may influence others; however, these relationships remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate the association between scapulohumeral trauma, postural abnormalities, and TMDs, and to asse

Pain Management Strategies in Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is a commonly utilized procedure for rotator cuff arthropathy, irreparable rotator cuff tears, and complex proximal humerus fractures. Although rTSA significantly improves long-term pain and function, postoperative pain remains common and is closely associated with increased opioid consumption, prolonged hospitalization, delayed recovery, and reduced patient satisfaction. Within the modern context of the opioid epidemic, optimizing pain control while minimizing narcotic usage is essential. This review summarizes recent evidence on p
