STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort.
INTRODUCTION: Clinical studies that evaluate the correlation between associated lesions of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) and outcome of distal radial fractures expressed with the patient-rated disability are missing.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the outcomes of distal radius fractures associated with or without an injury of the TFCC.
METHODS: Patients undergoing operative treatment for distal radial fracture were prospectively enrolled (n = 70). The TFCC was examined by wrist arthroscopy, and injuries were classified according to Palmer.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the capitellum are rare and are commonly classified into 4 types. Type II variants involve a shear injury with a mostly articular cartilage component and little subchondral bone. Symptoms upon presentation after these injuries are variable, and the diagnosis can be difficult to make in the immature skeleton.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 3 cases of type II capitellar fractures in adolescent athletes who presented for evaluation with the senior author.
RESULTS: All patients were initially treated conservatively, without identification or treatment of the capite

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) tool added to the predictive ability of established prognostic factors, including patient demographic and clinical outcomes, to predict return to work (RTW) in injured workers with musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders of the upper extremity.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using a population-based database from the Workers' Compensation Board of Alberta (WCB-Alberta) that focused on claimants with upper extremity injuries was used. Besides the DASH, potential predictors included demographic, occupational,

Mutilated hands at the distal level may pose a challenge for reconstruction. Biological treatment options may require multiple surgical interventions and a long rehabilitation course with little hope of good functional outcome. Standard hand prostheses are also not an ideal solution, as they are too long and cumbersome for partial hand injuries. This paper outlines the functional outcomes of prosthetic reconstruction with devices customized for the transcarpal amputation levels. The functional outcome was evaluated with the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), Southampton Hand Assessment Procedure

PURPOSE: For most types of acromioclavicular (AC) injuries, treatment is well established. For Neer type 2 lateral clavicle fractures and Rockwood types 3-5 AC dislocations, the ideal treatment is still a point of debate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional and radiological outcome in patients treated for one of these two lesions in our hospital.
METHODS: Our study group consisted of 30 patients with a Neer type 2 lateral clavicle fracture (n = 19) or Rockwood types 3-5 AC dislocation (n = 11) treated with the clavicle hook plate. All implants were removed after healing.

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2013eng
Brachial plexus avulsions commonly occur in cats due to traumatic injuries involving the shoulder. Ultrasound may be an effective method for detecting injured nerves. Additional applications may include characterization of brachial plexus neoplasms and guidance of anesthetic nerve blocks. Aims of this study were to describe ultrasonographic approaches and the normal appearance of this plexus and other major nerves of the thoracic limb in cats. Eight feline cadavers were used to determine anatomic landmarks, obtain cross-sectional anatomic images of the target nerves, and compare these with ult

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Therapeutic ultrasound is one of the most widely and frequently used electrophysical agents. Despite over 60 years of clinical use, the effectiveness of ultrasound for treating people with pain, musculoskeletal injuries, and soft tissue lesions remains questionable. This article presents a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which ultrasound was used to treat people with those conditions. Each trial was designed to investigate the contributions of active and placebo ultrasound to the patient outcomes measured. Depending on the condition, ultrasou

Multidirectional and inferior instability of the shoulder is not rare. Etiological factors include various combinations of (a) repetitive injuries, (b) inherent joint laxity, and (c) one or more major injuries. It is seen in athletic and active patients without generalized joint laxity and as well in sedentary patients with hypermobile joints. Standard operations for unidirectional anterior or posterior dislocations fail to correct multidirectional instability because they do not correct inferior instability and they may displace the head in fixed subluxation to the opposite side leading to se

BACKGROUND: Although rare, athletic head and cervical spine injuries can be devastating. All health care professionals involved in the on-field care of athletes with these injuries should be aware of updated national guidelines as well as individual institutional practices regarding head and neck immobilization after on-field injuries. Appropriate prehospital management-including evaluation, equipment removal, spine board immobilization, and patient transfer-can mitigate further risk for these injured athletes.
INDICATIONS: The goal of spinal-motion restriction is to reduce spinal instability

A man in his 50s with an incomplete cervical spinal cord injury underwent a 3-week occupational therapy programme using a computer-assisted robotic device for the upper limbs (Diego) in an acute care spinal injury unit. The patient and their partner reported their experience. Range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, pain, fatigue, independence and occupational performance are reported. Improvements occurred in upper limb ROM (shoulder and elbow), muscle strength (right elbow extensors), fatigue and functional status. Whether the results in this patient with the Diego were the same or better tha

INTRODUCTION: The cervical spine is the most commonly affected region in traumatic spine injuries of patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), accounting for 75% of cases, followed by the thoracic and lumbar spine. The fracture may not be detectable in plain radiographs alone due to pre-existing kyphotic deformity with distorted anatomy and high-riding shoulders.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case with a floating cervical spine following a trivial trauma injury and with cervical myelopathy symptoms. After posterior fixation of the cervico-thoracic spine, the patient improved with Nurick sc

Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injury is a common shoulder injury. There are various techniques of ACJ reconstruction. Superficial infection after ACJ reconstruction is not an uncommon complication. However, osteomyelitis post ACJ reconstruction has never been highlighted as a possible complication. Our patient is a 31-year-old male who sustained a Rockwood 5 ACJ dislocation and had anatomical ACJ reconstruction with autogenous gracilis and semitendinosus graft. Our technique involved the anatomical reconstruction of the ACJ and the coracoclavicular ligament with the usage of two bioscrews and

Scapular winging is a painful and debilitating condition. The composite scapular motion of rotation, abduction, and tilting is necessary for proper shoulder function. Weakness or loss of scapular mechanics can lead to difficulties with elevation of the arm and lifting objects. The most common causes reported in the literature for scapular winging are dysfunction of the serratus anterior from long thoracic nerve injury causing medial winging or dysfunction of the trapezius from spinal accessory nerve injury causing lateral winging. Most reviews and teaching focus on these etiologies. However, a

We studied retrospectively a consecutive series of 547 shoulders in 529 patients undergoing operation for instability. In 41, the cause of instability was considered to be lateral avulsion of the capsule, including the inferior glenohumeral ligament, from the neck of the humerus, the HAGL lesion. In 35, the lesion was found at first exploration, whereas in six it was noted at revision of a previous failed procedure. In both groups, the patients were older on average than those with instability from other causes. Of the primary cases, in 33 (94.3%) the cause of the first dislocation was a viole

This case study details a rare injury managed conservatively with aggressive therapy with early return to competition. A 17-year-old high school wrestler suffered indirect trauma to the right upper extremity. The patient was forced to the mat where he felt pain in the posterior aspect of his shoulder and was point tender over the inferior pole of his right scapula. Radiographs reveal an avulsion fracture at the inferior angle of the scapula. Aggressive therapy included modalities to control inflammation and muscle guarding in addition to early scapular mobility. Maintenance of glenohumeral mot

Fracture care and osteogeneic response deviate significantly from normal in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI). In TBI open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are recommended whenever possible to improve mobilization in the face of spasticity and the formation of heterotopic ossification (HO). In the patient with SCI, immobility and paralysis negatively alter healing. A fracture above the level of SCI, although not altered in healing, when treated by ORIF will facilitate transfer training and self care. Lower extremity fractures in SCI have a high incide

Chronic rotator cuff injuries (CRCIs) still present a great challenge for orthopaedics surgeons. Many new therapeutic strategies are developed to facilitate repair and improve the healing process. However, there is no reliable animal model for chronic rotator cuff injury research. To present a new valuable rat model for future chronic rotator cuff injuries (CRCIs) repair studies, and describe the changes of CRCIs on the perspectives of histology, behavior and MRI. Sixty male Wistar rats were enrolled and underwent surgery of the left shoulder joint for persistent subacromial impingement. They

BACKGROUND: Climbing is an intricate sport composed of various disciplines, holds, styles, distances between holds, and levels of difficulty. In highly skilled climbers the potential for further strength-specific adaptations to increase performance may be marginal in elite climbers. With an eye on the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, more climbers are trying to maximize performance and improve training strategies. The relationships between muscular strength and climbing performance, as well as the role of strength in injury prevention, remain to be fully elucidated. This narrative review seeks to

BACKGROUND: Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injuries represent approximately 11% of all shoulder injuries and are managed surgically in severe cases via techniques such as hook-plating, button fixation, and graft-based reconstruction. While much of the existing literature on AC joint surgery points to relatively high rates of long-term complications and reoperations, short-term outcomes are not fully understood. Therefore, this study investigates short-term outcomes following AC joint surgery using a large database to provide comprehensive complication data and elucidate risk factors.
