[A case of calcified intracranial tuberculoma presenting unique MRI findings].

A 41-year-old male patient was admitted in our Ryukyu University Hospital complaining of parosmia. He had a history of miliary tuberculosis 21 years ago. Neurologically he showed left anosmia and hyperreflexia of the right upper extremity. Plain skull X-P and CT scan revealed a calcified mass, 25mm in diameter, at the left frontal base. In MRI, the mass showed isointensity using the T1 weighted inversion recovery sequence and heterogenously low intensity using the T2 weighted spin echo sequence. Surgery was performed by bifrontal craniotomy. Then the tumor was removed totally including two coe

[Oto-palato-digital syndrome. Clinico-radiological study].

Oto-palato-digital (OPD) or Tyabi syndrome is a familiar, X-linked bone dysplasia with intermediate expression, in females or autosomal dominant with more severe manifestations in males. In the past both the clinical features (flat face with sunken and broad nasal bridge, antimongoloid slant of palpebral fissures, palatoschysis, conductive deafness, short and broad thumbs and big toes, nail dystrophy) and radiological findings (thick and dense base of the skull, prominence of supraorbital ridges, middle ear bone deformities with dense ossicles, large and broad vertebral bodies, posterior defec

Obstructive sleep apneic patients have craniomandibular abnormalities.

One hundred fifty-five unselected obstructive sleep apneic patients seen in succession had cephalometric roentgenograms and polygraphic recordings performed. These patients were compared to a group of 41 subjects who had consulted orthodontists for malocclusion and had no clinical indication of sleep apnea. The cephalometric landmarks were also compared to those published as normative data in the literature. The limits of "normalcy" were conservatively defined as mean +/- 2 standard deviations. Only two obstructive sleep apneic patients had normal cephalometric landmarks and 150 of the 155 pat

CT in the evaluation of the orbit and the bony interorbital distance.

The distance between the orbits and their individual dimensions are important in the diagnosis of craniofacial anomalies. Most observers rely on standard radiographs for measuring the bony interorbital distance. Tomography of the skull base and orbital computed tomography (CT) can also be used. This article describes the normal range of the bony interorbital distance and other useful orbital linear and angular measurements as determined from a series of CT scans of the orbits in 400 adults who had CT for other purposes. The normal interorbital distance measured at the posterior border of the f…

Comparison of clinical and computed tomographic staging of head and neck tumors.

The extent of tumor was staged independently using conventional clinical methods and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) in 100 patients with tumors at the base of the skull, nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, nose, and paranasal sinuses. Conventional clinical methods used for staging included physical examination, routine biopsy, routine radiography, tomography, and sonography when appropriate. In 10 patients, CT identified tumors that had not been apparent clinically; eight of these were in the nasopharynx and two in the hypopharynx. In another 26 patients, CT showed the tumo

[Causative relationship between cranial base deformities and trigeminal neuralgia].

From a series of 110 cases of surgically treated trigeminal neuralgia the author reports two cases in which impressio basilaris was the cause of neuralgia. One of these patients was operated on by the method of Frazier-Spiller, the other by Dandy's method in a microsurgical modification. These two methods gave the author an opportunity of comparing intraoperative findings in the middle and posterior cranial fossa. In the middle cranial fossa besides deformity of the base of the skull thinning was found of the dura, flattening of Gasser's ganglion and the postganglionic fibres of the trigeminal

Management to prevent high-sited recurrence of pharyngo-laryngeal cancers.

The development of reconstructional techniques in cervico-facial surgery has led to the proposal of surgical solutions, in conjunction with radiotherapy, for the extensive epidermoid carcinomas of the oropharynx and hypopharynx that were formerly rejected by the surgeon. However these stage III or IV epidermoid carcinomas carry a heavy proportion of "high" recurrences, i.e. situated in the parapharyngeal, oropharyngeal and rhinopharyngeal regions. The reasons for this are: the lymphatic continuity between the oro- and hypopharynx and the parapharyngeal regions and the base of the skull; the li

The syndrome of basal encephalocele and hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction.

We documented hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction in three patients with congenital herniation of the brain through the base of the skull (basal encephalocele). All had growth hormone deficiency, although one has attained normal height. One had diabetes insipidus. Two had hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Prolactin secretion was elevated in one, normal in another, and borderline low in the third. Two patients were euthyroid, but in response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) injection, one patient's thyrotropin (TSH) level increased to levels exceeding normal while the other's did not attain n

Craniometaphysial dysplasia with leukoencephalopathy. A case report.

A case of craniometaphysial dysplasia with extensive degeneration of the cerebral white matter is presented. The cortex of the swollen part of the long bones was quite thin and there was striking trabecular atrophy. Both the vault and base of the skull showed marked thickening and sclerosis, leaving no interlaminal zone. It is probable that the diffuse degenerative change of the cerebral white matter with gliosis bears some resemblance to that produced by a circulatory disturbance of the great vein of Galen. Due to the narrowed foramen magnum, deformed atlase and axis, and the surrounding post

Extreme evolutionary shifts in developmental timing establish the miniature Danionella as a novel model in the neurosciences.

BACKGROUND: Species of Danionella rank among the smallest of all vertebrates and their miniature size is correlated with an extreme case of progenesis, resulting in tiny, transparent sexually mature individuals. Progenesis has affected the entire skeleton of Danionella, in which 60 skeletal elements are absent, including some of the skull roofing bones. This lack of a skull roof combined with the presence of a fully formed hearing and sound producing apparatus has led to Danionella being used as an important model for neurophysiological studies. RESULTS: Using both rank based and PGi analyses

Evaluation of bone excision effects on a human skull model - I: Mechanical testing and digital image correlation.

The mechanisms of skull impact loading may change following surgical interventions such as the removal of bone lesions, but little is known about the consequences in the event of subsequent head trauma. We, therefore, prepared acrylonitrile butadiene styrene human skull models based on clinical computed tomography skull data using a three-dimensional printer. Six replicate physical skull models were tested, three with bone excisions and three without. A drop tower was used to simulate the impact sustained by falling backwards onto the occipital lobe region. The impacts were recorded with a hig

Osteology of the skull of Tropidosuchus romeri (Archosauriformes: Proterochampsidae).

Tropidosuchus romeri is a member of the clade Proterochampsidae (non-Archosauria Archosauriformes) collected from Upper Triassic (lower Carnian) outcrops of the Chañares Formation of the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin (La Rioja Province, Argentina). This species is a non-rhadinosuchine proterochampsid known from several specimens, including almost complete skeletons. Here, we describe and compare in detail the skull of T. romeri based on direct observation of specimens and the three-dimensional segmentation of one of them based on computed microtomography scans. Contrasting with previous stud

Computational mouse atlases and their application to automatic assessment of craniofacial dysmorphology caused by the Crouzon mutation Fgfr2(C342Y).

Crouzon syndrome is characterized by premature fusion of sutures and synchondroses. Recently, the first mouse model of the syndrome was generated, having the mutation Cys342Tyr in Fgfr2c, equivalent to the most common human Crouzon/Pfeiffer syndrome mutation. In this study, a set of micro-computed tomography (CT) scannings of the skulls of wild-type mice and Crouzon mice were analysed with respect to the dysmorphology caused by Crouzon syndrome. A computational craniofacial atlas was built automatically from the set of wild-type mouse micro-CT volumes using (1) affine and (2) non-rigid image r

The injured coach.

The patient in this case was diagnosed as having an epidural hematoma (shown in x-ray at right). This results from hemorrhage between the dura mater and the skull. The hemorrhage may result from a traumatic insult to the side of the head, which can fracture the temporal bone and lacerate the middle meningeal artery. Since the hemorrhage is arterial in nature, the patient may deteriorate quickly. These patients may present with what is referred to as a "lucid interval." The patient typically has a significant blow to the head that results in a short period of unconsciousness. They then regain c

Semi-chronic laminar recordings in the brainstem of behaving marmoset monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Chronic recordings with multi-electrode arrays are widely used to study neural networks underlying complex primate behaviors. Most of these systems are designed for studying neural activity in the cortical hemispheres resulting in a lack of devices being capable of simultaneously recording from ensembles of neurons in deep brainstem structures. However, to fully understand complex behavior, it is fundamental to also decipher the intrinsic mechanisms of the underlying motor pattern generating circuits in the brainstem. NEW METHOD: We report a light-weight system that simultaneously
