Jugular foramen fibromatosis in a 3-month-old male.

A 3-month-old male with a chief complaint of episodic choking with feeds and a hoarse cry is presented. Left eye ptosis and asymmetric soft palate elevation were detected on physical examination. Fiberoptic examination showed a left vocal fold paresis and pooling of secretions in the pyriform sinuses. MRI demonstrated an ill-defined lesion at the left jugular foramen extending into the left carotid sheath. A fine needle biopsy revealed spindle shaped cells consistent with fibromatosis. The histopathology of fibromatosis and the differential diagnosis of jugular foramen masses in children will

[Hemangiopericytoma (extrapleural solitary fibrous tumour). Exemplified and discussed on the basis of two cases].

BACKGROUND: Hemangiopericytoma was first mentioned in 1942. It is a very uncommon potentially malignant vascular tumour which can occur at every site of the body. According to the WHO, most of the tumours formerly diagnosed as hemangiopericytomas are considered to be extrapleural solitary fibrous tumours. The diagnosis of "hemangiopericytoma" is now only determined if a constant histological picture of hemangiopericytoma is present. The tumour can lead to lymphogenous or hematogenous metastasis. The major location of occurrence is the cutis and subcutis. It originates from the pericytes of the

Cytophotometrical and immunohistochemical analysis of soft palate muscles of children with isolated cleft palate and combined cleft lip and palate.

Palatal muscle biopsies from the cleft margin of children were subjected to cytophotometrical and immunohistochemical analysis. Muscle fiber types were classified according to the enzyme activity of myofibrillic adenosine triphosphatase, glycerol-3-phosphate-dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase assessed cytophotometrically. Fiber type-related immunoreactivity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms I, II, III, as a physiological modulator of skeletal muscle function, was related to the oxidative and glycolytic activity of the muscle fibers. Fast oxidative glycolytic fibers with high oxida

Respiratory and acoustic signals associated with bolus passage during swallowing.

In order to advance our understanding of the relation between respiration and deglutition, simultaneous videofluoroscopy and respirodeglutometry was performed. Fifteen normal, healthy, young adults (20-29 years of age) were connected to a respirodeglutometer and positioned for simultaneous videofluoroscopic assessment in the lateral plane. Subjects performed three swallows each of a 5-ml and a 10-ml bolus of liquid barium and a 5-ml bolus of paste barium, for a total of nine swallows per subject. Location of the bolus head as identified with videofluoroscopy was associated with eight respirode

Priorities in the management of penetrating maxillofacial trauma in the pediatric patient.

Penetrating facial trauma is uncommon in children; a large series published by Cooper et al revealed that only 1% to 2% of the total population of infants and children admitted for trauma during their study period had a diagnosis of penetrating trauma to the head or neck. Little has been published specifically addressing these injuries in the pediatric population. The records of 20 patients treated for penetrating facial injuries at Kosair-Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky from January 1991 through December 1994 were reviewed. The location, mechanism and extent of injury, as well as

Cephalometric evaluation of pharynx, soft palate, adenoid tissue, tongue, and hyoid bone following the use of a mandibular repositioning appliance in obstructive sleep apnea patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharynx, soft palate, adenoid tissue, tongue, and hyoid bone when a mandibular repositioning appliance was used for managing patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Lateral cephalograms of 45 adult obstructive sleep apnea patients from the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic were taken without the appliance and some days later with the device in the mouth. This device was used during sleep for improving patients' respiration. Twenty-four cephalometric variables were evaluated. When the appliance was in the mouth, significant alterations (P < .001) were observ

Magnetic resonance imaging of the thorax.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a new technique in chest radiology. It appears to be particularly useful in examining the hila. Other regions of the mediastinum can also be successfully imaged, and vessels are well seen. MRI has become the procedure of choice for evaluating dissecting aortic aneurysms, especially in stable patients. Imaging of other conditions and diseases has yielded information comparable to that obtained with CT.

A Physics-Informed Neural Network Surrogate for Patient-Specific Hepatic Arterial Hemodynamics in Yttrium-90 Radioembolization: Network Architecture, Boundary-Condition Enforcement, and Data Efficiency.

Trans-arterial radioembolization using yttrium-90 (Y-90) microspheres treats unresectable liver cancer with radiation. The tumor-to-parenchyma dose ratio is mainly governed by the patient-specific hepatic arterial flow distribution, which transports the microspheres. Even though computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation can predict this flow distribution, its high computational cost and time limit intraprocedural application. To overcome this computational limitation, a physics-informed neural network (PINN) surrogate was developed to provide rapid predictions of flow distribution in a pat

Intramedullary Nailing Technique for Proximal Humeral Fractures Using a Straight Antegrade Nail with Locking Tuberosity Fixation.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary straight nail fixation of proximal humeral fractures using a locking mechanism provides advantages compared with plating, including (1) less soft-tissue dissection, which preserves periosteal blood supply and soft-tissue attachments; (2) improved construct stability for comminuted fractures or osteopenic bone; and (3) shorter operative time for simpler fractures. DESCRIPTION: The patient is placed in the beach-chair position with the head of the bed elevated approximately 45°. The fracture is reduced with use of closed or percutaneous methods, ideally, or with an op

ELASTOGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF NATURALLY OCCURING TENDON AND LIGAMENT INJURIES OF THE EQUINE DISTAL LIMB.

Compression elastography is an ultrasonographic technique that estimates tissue strain and may have utility in diagnosing and monitoring soft tissue injuries in the equine athlete. Recently, elastography has been proven to be a feasible and repeatable imaging modality for evaluating normal tendons and ligaments of the equine distal forelimb. The purposes of this prospective study were to investigate the ability of elastography to detect spontaneously occurring lesions of equine tendons and ligaments diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and gray-scale ultrasound (US) and to character

Elastofibroma dorsi management and outcomes: review of 16 cases.

OBJECTIVES: Elastofibroma dorsi (ED) is a rare, benign lesion arising from connective tissue, usually found at the inferior pole of the scapula. To date, only a few small series have been reported in the English literature and there are few data about the long-term outcomes after surgery. Our goal is to contribute a better understanding of this tumour and to determine the long-term outcomes after surgery. METHODS: Sixteen patients with a diagnosis of ED were identified from the unit's database. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, pathological evidences and long-term outcomes were evaluated.
