How survivors of trauma remember--or forget--their most terrifying experiences lies at the core of one of the most bitter controversies in psychiatry and psychology: the debate regarding repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse. Most experts hold that traumatic events--those experienced as overwhelmingly terrifying and often life-threatening--are remembered very well; however, traumatic dissociative amnesia theorists disagree. Although acknowledging that traumatic events are usually memorable, these theorists nevertheless claim that a sizable minority of survivors are incapable of remember

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in connection with pregnancy was first described in the 1990s--initially in relation to childbirth but later more specifically to the mode of delivery. Instrumental vaginal delivery carries the highest risk of PTSD followed by emergency caesarean section and normal spontaneous delivery. Loss of pregnancy, spontaneous abortion or intrauterine death for example can also lead to PTSD. Little systematic research has been performed regarding the psychological consequences of severe preeclampsia or HELLP syndrome, although it would seem obvious that these conditi

This article reviews the existing evolutionary perspectives on the acute stress response habitual faintness and blood-injection-injury type-specific phobia (BIITS phobia). In this article, an alternative evolutionary perspective, based on recent advances in evolutionary psychology, is proposed. Specifically, that fear-induced faintness (eg, fainting following the sight of a syringe, blood, or following a trivial skin injury) is a distinct Homo sapiens-specific extreme-stress survival response to an inescapable threat. The article suggests that faintness evolved in response to middle paleolithi

This study investigated the cardiovascular responses to a relived anger task in 118 male Vietnam combat veterans (62 with posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD] and 56 without PTSD). Participants completed standardized diagnostic measures, hostility measures, and a laboratory session in which they relived a self-chosen anger memory while heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured continuously using an Ohmeda Finapres monitor. Compared with veterans without PTSD, PTSD veterans took less time to feel anger, had greater mean HR and DBP response during

INTRODUCTION: Perceived injustice is increasingly recognized as a key factor influencing mental health in war survivors. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Ukrainian translation of the Perceived Injustice Questionnaire (PIQ) among individuals directly exposed to the war in Ukraine.
METHODS: 170 war-exposed Ukrainians completed the Ukrainian PIQ and measures of post-traumatic tress disorder (PCL-5), depression (PHQ-9), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7), and potentially traumatic life events (LEC-5). Internal consistency, factor structure, and cri

BACKGROUND: Forced displacement due to armed conflict is associated with a substantial burden of mental health disorders, particularly among internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in camps. In eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), ongoing insecurity and protracted displacement expose IDPs to repeated traumatic events and chronic stressors. However, data remain limited on the prevalence of common mental disorders and their associated factors among camp-based IDPs in North Kivu, especially when accounting for heterogeneous exposure profiles.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectio

The visual impairment in traumatic and ischemic optic neuropathy and amblyopia may be permanent. Hence, lots of efforts have been focused on neuroprotection. Dopamine is one of the suggested neuroprotective agents. Besides its important role in the brain, dopamine is found in various cell types of the retina, and is claimed to play a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter role there. The dopamine D1 receptor is the most highly expressed subtype of dopamine receptors, and its activation has been shown to be potentially neuroprotective against oxidative-stress damage in retinal neurons. Veterans die by suicide at almost twice the rate of non-veterans, and risks for suicide can be further increased after sustaining traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is notable, given that over 20 % of post-9/11 Veterans are estimated to have experienced TBI. Better understanding risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) would allow for improved screening processes and targeted treatment approaches. In this study, we use data from 823 veterans who served after September 11, 2001 and participated in the VISN 6 MIRECC's Post-Deployment Mental Health Study. In total, 511 (62.1 %) veterans re

BACKGROUND: The effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on return to work have been the focus of many clinical studies in recent years. Veterans with a history of TBI may be at increased risk of unemployment.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to understand predictors of work outcomes for Veterans with a history of TBI who received evidence-based supported employment.
METHODS: Fifty unemployed Veterans with a history of mild-to-moderate TBI and current neuropsychological impairment participated in a 12-month supported employment intervention. Demographic data and baseline assessments of neuropsychological

Several studies report on traumatic history in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and comorbidity between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and OCD. First-line pharmacological treatments for both OCD and PTSD are primarily based on antidepressants, including Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Serotonin-Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI) such as Venlafaxine for PTSD. Second-Generation Antipsychotic (SGA) augmentation has shown good outcomes for nonresponsive OCD cases. However, evidence on the use of SGA in PTSD is more limited. In the present paper, we report on como

This study tested the hypotheses of irritable bowel syndrome showing (1) comorbidity with chemical and sound intolerance, other types of functionally somatic syndromes, and psychiatric disorders and (2) stronger than normal affective reactions to and behavioral disruptions from odorous/pungent chemicals and sounds in daily life. These hypotheses were tested by means of data from a large-scale population-based questionnaire study. The results showed comorbidity in irritable bowel syndrome with chemical and sound intolerance, fibromyalgia, migraine, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized an

Childhood social anxiety disorder is a condition of complex origins. Longitudinal studies of shyness and behavioral inhibition, and twin and family history studies, support a genetic component, but experiences such as family environment, parenting, and traumatic conditioning also are observed. Many children with significant shyness and behavioral inhibition do not develop social anxiety disorder, reinforcing the need for longitudinal studies exploring resiliency and risk factors that can be incorporated into diathesis stress models. Efficacy data regarding cognitive and behavioral therapies an

Ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury are two leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide. Despite their different primary insults, both conditions trigger a complex cascade of secondary brain injury that largely determines neurological outcome. This review systematically compares the epidemiology, shared molecular pathways, and emerging therapeutic strategies for secondary brain injury after ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury. We focus on three interconnected pathological cascades spanning blood-brain barrier disruption, neuroinflammation, and neuronal death driven

BACKGROUND: Exercise improves stress perception and sleep quality and reduces repetitive negative thinking in patients with various mental disorders. However, it is unclear whether changes in these processes mediate treatment effects on psychopathology in a transdiagnostic sample.
METHODS: Physically inactive adult outpatients with depressive disorders, agoraphobia, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and/or nonorganic primary insomnia were randomly allocated to ImPuls - a 6-month transdiagnostic group exercise intervention - plus treatment-as-usual (n = 198), or to a treatment-as

The mechanisms underpinning concussion, traumatic brain injury, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and the relationships between these disorders, are poorly understood. We examined post-mortem brains from teenage athletes in the acute-subacute period after mild closed-head impact injury and found astrocytosis, myelinated axonopathy, microvascular injury, perivascular neuroinflammation, and phosphorylated tau protein pathology. To investigate causal mechanisms, we developed a mouse model of lateral closed-head impact injury that uses momentum transfer to induce traumatic head acceleration. U
